Spec Ops is amazing and so is this. I treasure games to make me feel things that aren't powerful or joyous, because they are so rare.

So do I. I loved System Shock 2 but I never completed it, not even nearly. I loved the P.T. Demo too but partly because of the brevity. Films play with your emotions but they also employ careful pacing, something that is more difficult to achieve with games but was done masterfully by The Last Of Us. In that game you were similarly on the back foot most of the time but it was also able to mix it up a bit.

All that said I have barely even begun this game so I can't comment on it in its entirety.

Ive made it through mission 5

its still scary. but also getting a bit annoying having to sit and wait. Im fairly sure the alien has some "routes" it prowls, too.
No matter how quiet you are it also seems to follow you, frustratingly. I appreciate it wants to eat me, and the game wants me to be dealing with it, but damn, give me some air to breath, you cunt!

Onto mission 10 now. There is a particularly awesome fan service in Mission 9 also. So if you havent got there yet, thats all to look forward to.

Once I figured out the Alien a bit the game has become a bit less scary, plus he has killed me a few times so I have got used to the shock and terror of it.
Quite proud so far I have managed to evade the common "tail stab through the gut" death mechanic because I havent been dumb enough to turn my back on the bastard yet.

I've actually had this game for an age now - got a free copy through work. Still not even touched it. Any time I have in front of my PC, which hasn't been a whole lot lately to be fair, has been dedicated to Elite Dangerous. I'm really going to have to get on it though, I keep hearing such good things about it.

Ok, I'm back into this. I didn't like the opener much but now I've met the Alien and picked up the motion tracker it's got its hooks in me and it is now the next game I'm playing.

Frankly, what did it for me was the noise the motion tracker makes on the PS4 pad. Fucking ace.

Man alive, it's yeaching me some harsh lessons about watching the environment.

Yes, yeaching. Because autocorrect is quite happy with that even if it ain't got a capital letter.

And something about Alien: Isolation not having checkpoints.

Post subject:  Re: Alien : Isolation

I've been playing it straight up stealthy anyway. Despite pulling my pistol out in that vid, I've only used it once to kill a particularly fast android that was walking about a small area before you find the torch. 5 shots it took to take him down. FIVE.

It's better playing it as intended anyway. I get fully into it even if I've been back and forth to the emergency phone umpteen times. It's better in fact as I slowly get shit scared that I'll have to repeat a section all over again. "Don't face fuck me Mr Alien" I'm screaming in my head as I peer around another box and, after a long load between sections "where's the facking telephone. Hnnnngh. What's that noise? It's in the room. ITS IN THE ROOM"

I just couldn't take another visit on the 'bit before the torch' though as the run to the room takes ages and you have to go up a slow lift etc so I blew his creamy blood out.

Bit disappointed with the airlock cutscene. That could have lasted a lot longer and I'd bloody well sat there and watched it.

To be honest, I'm getting a bit bored of this schick now. Press this, pull that, mini game, press this 3 times, then 3 times, then 3 times, now pull that again, slowly walk over there, mini game, pull that. Honestly. I'm bored. I can tell I'm bored because I've used the shotgun on some faces to move along quicker.

What. The. Fuck. Was that shit?

Did she do some kind of curly muffin jump back to her ship for starters? That was fucking stupid. I couldn't understand what was going on during those moments.

And the airlock shit? Just show us the airlock sucking them out. Anything. Not just a blank screen and then floating about to be picked up by, who? Who exactly? No fucker had come to that place since it was shut down?

God that ending was so shit it annoyed me.

If they couldn't do the airlock bit, do it as a cutscene or something. And the curly muffin. And another bit where she was jumping about space... I forget when. Oh, the very first airlock bit.

Fucking annoyed.

Really.

Oh, and the last level or two? The FUCKING music? Why? Just be quiet. I especially don't want some music where they've gone and shoved in a couple of sounds that sound like the alien. It's a game about being quiet and listening, why in fucks name would I want some music that is not only distracting but a fucking irritation to the core game mechanics.

And I couldn't care less if your ending music has the one line of spoken word that S. Weaver did for your game mixed into your gay ass music. Stupid.

Anyway. Here's the highlights:

Starts off boring.
Gets better.
Meets Alien!
Real good.
Bit bored.
More bored.
Why am I doing these samey tasks.
More taks.
There's no story here just engineering work.
Am I getting paid.
Oh a good bit.
That didn't last long.
The core!
That wasn't the end?
Is this still going?
Very long walk in space.
Still walking.
That wasn't the end either?
Bored.
Bored.
Oh fuck this.
Running about and flaming the alien.
Alien mechanics exposed.
Boring menial tasks still?
They ran out of ideas four hours ago didn't they?
*falls asleep*
Another boring skywalk.
Stupid ending.
And then another.
Ripley techno techno techno dance remix credits.

Vee dot disappointed with the overal package. A third of this is brilliant and could have been the game of the year. Then a third is absolute shit: the endless repetitive tasks, the lack of a convincing story thanks to the endless repetitive taks, pulling switches, ion torch panels, press X twenty times. And the last third is just filler: crap space walks, stupid ending, repetitive environments, the same old robot tugging on your trouser leg. Every. Single. Time.

My advice is this: play it for three hours. Then turn it off and remember the greatest alien game ever made. Enjoy.

It's 75% off on Steam this weekend, so 12,49€, whatever that is in royal dough. And the Season Pass is 50% off, which happens to land it at the same price!

Post subject:  Re: Alien : Isolation

Fuck knows what the season pass actually is, though, it doesn't seem to include any of the DLC.

Post subject:  Re: Alien : Isolation

Further research reveals that the season pass includes five packs for the survivor mode:

The Trigger
Lost Contact
Safe Haven
Trauma
Corporate Lockdown

It does not include the two story-based DLCs Last Survivor and Crew Expendable. Both these are 50% off separately as well, though.

Hmmm yes I've just logged into Steam and it's £7.99, which seems a modest price to pay.

Then again, this is the game that only lets you save when it wants you to, isn't it....

Plus Ian's write-up doesn't exactly inspire me, and I've agreed with him on games type stuff before. (Like when everyone was bumming Far Cry 3 and he said he didn't think it was that good. And I thought it was crap.)

When you play it, you'll see straight away why they did that. Being able to save when you want would totally remove all the dread from the game.

. I am not really feeling it too much, though. I am not adapting well to "hide from everyone". I will try it some more, though, as when it was tense it was good, but hiding innabin away from bandits wasn't doing much for me last night.
