From all the horror stories I'd say stay away forever, but maybe people are being angry because it's not what was advertised rather than it being no good at all.

It's well worth a look if you're intrigued by it, I mostly enjoyed the twenty or thirty hours I played of it and I'd be tempted to go back after some more updates. You can pick it up for less than twenty quid.

For £20, it's great. For £46, less so.

Obviously you look at the Metacritic user reviews, which are objectively correct.

A friend of a friend paid about £85 for the digital "special edition" of this on the day of release apparently.

More money than sense.

Can't imagine the ability to build race tracks was at the top of many people's NMS wishlists, but this looks like a hefty update.

I bought it in this very sale.

And of course haven't installed it yet.

Am committed to finishing Far Cry 4 and incinerating my eyeballs in Resogun, but will get to it (and the also-purchased Witcher 3) at some point in the next 12 months.

In a fit of madness I also bought Garden Warfare 2 and I don't know why as I don't really do multiplayer. I think I was just hankering after some PopCap polish.

This is good now.

It's so much bigger I can't really remember how it was before. There are faction missions to improve your standing (and give you something to do.) The UI has been overhauled endlessly; most notably, there's a quick menu for recharging tech. There's a new plotline, but I've barely started it so can't comment.

Base building now exists, and seems cool (it's vaguely like Fallout 4.) Bases have a teleport system so you can get back to them, then return to wherever you were. Bases can be used to farm for materials and cash, and built out to look cool. Mine is on a planet made up of archipelagoes covered in blue mountains and red grass. You can also buy freighters, massive capital ships, but they cost huge amounts of money. Oh, and speaking of freighters, I warped into a system to find a battle and ended up dogfighting pirates defending one of them -- it must have been a mile long.

Randomly generated new biomes keep things fresh (I saw a "Terraforming Catastrophe", blighted by 150 degrees temperature swings and choking dust clouds.) It's still beautiful to look at at all times.

You still start with meagre inventory space that needs careful management, but new game mechanics make finding upgrades much quicker and much less reliant on dumb luck. You also quite quickly figure out which resources you should keep a modest stock of at all times (iron, plutonium, zinc, thanium) and which you can safely sell at every opportunity.

It's still not a thrill-ride -- it's very deliberately a laid-back, chilled affair -- but that's fine. Everything doesn't have to be Uncharted. Some of the dogfights are tricky though.

Really glad I held onto my copy.

If you start over they might have made the game less inscrutable, too. I picked up my old save so had no tutorial at all -- including to most of the new stuff, so that was fun.

Forgot one of the best new features: you can summon your ship from anywhere on a planet surface. So you never need to trudge back to it.

We've restarted this now - it's much, much better. Still not worth 40 quid or whatever I spent on it, but good.

First Born is at a really good age to kick off with this now (almost 11) so he's been having a lovely weekend playing it. He's managed to get a 48 slot shuttle within a few hours! He's been looking for the right planet to set up a base on. It's still not intuitive, and he's had to ask me to look up a few things, but it's going pretty well so far.

Given the scope of the previous patches (ie. huge), "our biggest update yet" is potentially massive. Also note: looks like it's getting an Xbox One release.

I bought it for cheap ages ago, played it for a fe hours and haven’t touched it since. My main recollection is that it’s very chilled, but looks inexplicably lo-res.

With their track record it probably means you've got to buy a second monitor and then sellotape both of them to your head.

Another hefty update

The game looks vastly different to the thing I played for a few hours ages ago. I have a number of games to finish (God of War, Mad Max, Shadow of the Colossus), but I'm really looking forward to giving this a proper go.

After hearing about the upcoming update I decided to take the plunge and bought a 2nd hand copy from GAME for £9.99.

I downloaded it and started again yesterday. It's a lot prettier than it was, and the base building stuff seems fun.

It seems to have decided that people want to grind a lot less, too. In my first couple of hours I found a new ship worth 50x what my starting ship was worth and got given a new, much more functional multitool.

Hmm, will I need PS+ for the NEXT multiplayer stuff? The internet seems wibbly over it.

I'd imagine so. The only exceptions to "you need PS+ for multiplayer" I can think of are all games that have their own subscription.

Oh yeah, I guess Warframe too, and some others probably.

Turns out to do need Live Gold to play Fortnite though.

Jesus, he makes some apologies for them at the start. They flat-out lied about what the game contained - even after it was released. There's no fucking way they should be forgiven for that.

That Sean Murray guy is funny, he reminds me of the Iraqi General who said the war was won for the Iraqis as American tanks were blowing up the shit out of everything in the same camera shot.

I wouldn't rule out giving this game a go, it always had potential to be something impressive IMO.

Managed to spend a couple of hours on it last night. Spawned on a lovely hot poisonous planet and died within 15 mins as I grappled with what the hell I was supposed to do.

Once I got to grips with the basics I was happily romping around in caves, feeding duck cows, 'talking' to a frogman and repairing my ship.

Love it.
