I had the idea of putting a turn-off and onable rotating, one line 'news' block at the top of the site.
It could contain news like "one day left on the photo competition" or "Xbox 360 Obscure Night at Monday 10pm" or whatever.

Thoughts?

Not 100% convinced, but definitely worth trying.

I'm all for it, handy if you're unsure what the pertinent news of the day is.

We could have a CG anger alert. Like the American terror alerts.

A small icon of different colours to indicate the prevailing level of anger.

Oh and naturally the ticker should inform everyone what todays bad smell is.

I think it could be handy, especially if, like the signatures/avatars people could choose whether or not it is visible to them - is that a possibility, Grim??? (hehe, see what I did there? I suggest that to be the new forum standard, and use Grim!!! when we are angry or surprised with the big chap :) )

Monkey agrees :munkeh:

Yeah Dudley, I'll tell everyone that you're clearly mafia and I'll be strangely believed yet again, only to find out you're the town rentboy. Filthy, but innocent.

I like the idea of an anger alert level, the trouble is the stress of maintaining it would probably piss me off.

I did read that, but I wasn't sure if you meant that it would be activated some days and not others, depending on whether there was news, or if it actually meant that some people could choose not to see it, which is why I asked, just to clarify.

Just set it to "Mafia game update: Angry mob lynches innocent townie" and just leave it to run, it'll always be up to date.

I like the idea, so long as it's not too intrusive. We definitely don't need it displaying at the top of every page. Just the General Discussion page or something?

Just the forum pages (ie - not the thread pages).

Instead of at the top of the page, what about using a tight FOR loop Javascript invocation that fiddles with status.write() so it ends up in the browser status bar? Also, there's not enough <BLINK> tag, can we fix that too?

I'll get my coat.

It sounds neat :)

I support this idea. Bonus points for making it go "bipbipbipbipbipbip" while typing out letter by letter, a la Teleprinter. On ever page. With Des Lynham reading them out.

That one featured a truly classic gag - "Garvey sees own name in news ticker - smiles at irony".

Make it do that, Grim..., with your powers.

There is np such thing as piracy. The game was just accidently in my tape to tape deck and there was a C90 in the other deck and the cat must have brushed past it and pressed "dub". :attitude:

I did a job recently that required tables and font tags and all that nastiness (it was for an email campaign). *shudder* Don't go back, web guys, IT'S NOT SAFE!

This is probably too much to code, but it would be cool if you could click a little icon to delete a news item from the ticker once you'd seen it, or if you weren't interested, for example.

Works for me, although I must say I saw the page get taken down then put back up, and still didn't actually notice it. I also love having a coder that isn't just slapping IE code on and expecting everyone else to like it.

Yay for Grim...!

Er, you probably saw me testing it (live testing FTW), and making a mistake a bit before I made it visable to everybody.

That gets you an addition to the ticker :)

It was actually your signature that gave me the idea.

If anyone wants to add anything, just PM a mod.

I preferred it faster, but I'm well aware that you won't please everyone with it. I don't think many people rest on the front page long enough to see more than the first two items maximum.

jQuery is a good'un, I had a bit of a fiddle with it a while ago. Must pay more attention to these things but my brain is resistant to learning new things.

I recall having to install a mod to my php 2.* forum to get php code to execute on the forum pages at all. I assume php3 has kept that up? The PTS forum eventually had a random rotating pimp pulled from the db :)

It would be nice if it started at a random place, rather than showing the first item every time the page is loaded. Possible?

Is there any way of adding news items (because the photography challenge ends in 11 hours and I would put it up if I could) or is it only Grim... or the mods?

Also, it works really well, so well done.
