Yeah, okay. I need a break from packing and shifting things. One min.

That was fun. Filled with glee as I won both, the second being a bit more of a toughie, I sat back in my chair and grinned. Until I looked around at all the packing and shit I still had to do. Gagh.

Tried your right-click reinforce and right click rally tactics Grimmeh, they were good!

Mr Chris got Predators way before me in the second game, but fortunately I had the troop numbers upgraded to max and two dreadnoughts and whirlwind to disrupt his plans. An epic river battle took place with no cover for either side. Thanks to melta bombing power fist wielding assault teams I punched a hole through his line and he conceded, as he heard the terrifying mewling of his demon spawn Sam.

I'm still going to get raped by Grimmeh next time though.

I've just gotten the awesome-cheap all-the-expansions-for-fifteen-quid box-o-set for Dawn Of War, as seen in the Bargains thread. So I'd be dead up for some multiplayer funnery at some later date, if there's a slot available?

I couldn't quite work out how the right click bit was supposed to work...

I thought I had a decent sized force of chaos marines, backed up by a Defiler and a Predator, to take that Relic at the north end of the river. I needed that relic, see, as I desperately wanted to lay down some Bloodthirster on your scientologists in power armour.

So, my force starts wading across the river and BAM. They start flying in all directions. I can't see any enemies. I keep going. BAM. BAM. BAM.

Chuffing Whirlwinds... :)

I think that's written into the software licence for DoW.

So. I thought I was relatively OK at this game - I'd finished both single-player campaigns in the original DoW - but both times I've tried having a pop at Soulstorm and its "skirmish vs. the computer" style single-player scuffles (as the Guard, then the Tau) I've had my bottom handed to me in fairly short order.

Are there any general strategies for skirmish games that anyone could pass on, or a site/forum that you'd recommend for similar? Cheers.

For guard, against the CPU, do the following:

Build 5-6 straight infantry squads, and put them in the infantry buildings near a suitable incoming chokepoint. You want four turrets - front two guns, rear two missile. As soon as you can, back those up with a pair of basilisks and a pair of leman russ - you now have a basically inpenetrable defence.

Your next objective is a relic. On most maps this will mean reaching out some. Get all the buildings done first, then build up all your infantry as tough as they can be. Send out half your infantry and the two Leman Russ to grab a relic, then build the Baneblade/Storm Sword/whatever it is. This is the Guard 'I Win' button.

What difficulty are you playing? The jump between Standard and Hard is shocking.

It's Normal difficulty. I just suck a bit.

Craster - doesn't that just lead to your opponent nicking the Critical Locations while you're busy building up your base defence? Meaning they either hold out for a Take And Hold victory or start building up RPs so quickly that your impentrable base is basically no good to you?

I don't mean turtle - You have to keep moving your defensive line forward.

That makes sense. I think my problem with the Guard was that I was overreaching, and succumbing to the temptation to try and push on and nick one more SP until I was so stretched I could be picked off piecemeal, which is the exact opposite of what the Guard are good at (assuming this game's anything like TT). Cheers, Craster.

My problem with the Tau is that I had no bloody idea what I was doing with them and kept letting my Fire Warriors get dragged into melee. I think I need to churn out some cheap melee units to tie the enemy up and let the FWs do their thing.

Guard need to be kept out of melee, too. Basilisks and missile turrets are awesome at breaking up enemy charges and preventing them from getting too close.

Hmmm. How on earth do you stop people closing to melee in the early going? Is the only counter just having a bunch of other squads on hand to blast the enemy while they're tied up slaughtering one of your units?

When I used to play DoW I just used to play skirmishes as the Orks on easy difficulty. Very good stress relief after a day in the office to just build some units and tear through anything in your path.

Bunkers. Those buildings that let you build infantry? You can put your infantry inside them, same with upgraded control points.

I'd turn off take and hold if you want a chance to do stuff before the game is over.
I look forward to playing against Craster online, though :)

I don't like playing against people. I like easily predictable opponents.

Not sure you can turn it off in the Soulstorm SP campaign.

Take and hold is only a victory condition on a few (maybe 4?) of the Soulstorm maps. They're actually some of the hardest levels but you can always leave them until later. The Soulstorm campaign gets a lot easier after you have even just a couple of honour guard units, and at the halfway point you can trample everything but the strongholds by just rushing with the guard (especially once you take the Space Marines and Sisters HQs and get Forward Base and Garrisoning).

I may be up for this. I will post further at 8.30/9ish. Will depend on Sam's sleeping habits tonight.

What sort of time would you have in mind? I'd have to be off and in bed by 10.30 or so.

I had Sunday in mind ;)

I will play tonight, though. I'm pretty easy about the time, but the later the better for me.
9 will be fine.

If I get that Soulstorm thinger, will it work for multiplayer versus people that don't have it? I mean do the other versions have updates to allow the graphics in?
