I noticed that the VIVE is now on 2-3 day shipping, so you can get VR'd up with almost no wait.

I'm kinda tempted, but I do still think the Rift is the better headset and I'm inclined to wait for Touch to be released, but it's undeniable that not being able to interact with the world I'm placed in is seriously hampering my desire to use it.

It just occurred to me that this would be awesome in VR. Someone please get on it.

Are you saying that because you've used it, or because of some internal bias?

Pretty much everyone I know who's used both reckons the vive is the better of the two.

Although the one that seems further behind in terms of amount of software for it.

I've used a VIVE, albeit for not a huge amount of time.

The ergonomics of the Rift just seem to be so much more comfortable, and not having to dick about with headphones makes a surprising difference.

The FOV is much better in the VIVE though, I'll give it that.

I've just got an email saying my Rift is going to ship 'soon'. August doesn't feel like soon. :S

They seem to be going out a month and a bit earlier than anticipated, so it may very well be within a week or two.

I got a small taste of what you PC spods are experiencing in Elite yesterday. End Space VR is a space combat game where you control some moveable turrets with head tracking but you actually get to fly the spaceship with a controller as well.

At first you treat it like a.n. other turret shooter just pointing the ship in the general direction but then that actually doesn't work because the angle of your craft means your shots need to be fired at the relevant angle to compensate. So you end up flying properly and it's at that point when you're banking sharply to pepper the underside of a ship as it veers away from you filling up most of your field of view the younger me that played Rebel Assault 2 and thought "Well this would be good if it wasn't all just on rails and pre-rendered?" now looks like a fucking idiot because I couldn't have imagined something quite as immersive as this.

I always thought that as I got older I really would become a miserable fucker who just liked Last of The Summer Wine and the Daily Express but I can't begin to explain how much joy stuff like this and the new Doom bring me even now as 50 looms large in the not too distant future.

Also the act of breaking wind still remains funny.

Fuck YOU maturity.

I've never used Pornhub for VR.

I've given other sources of material a try though.

It's... interesting.

I tried pinball last night - Stern have done some of their tables in VR.

It's not responsive enough to play properly but the table is perfectly positioned below you like a normal table is and you can hit the ramps much easier with the perspective offered by a full VR environment.

I can see neck ache setting in if playing it for long periods of time but (performance aside) it is easily the closest you will come to playing a real table.

Woop woop!

I barely use mine currently, annoyingly - it needs the touch controllers, or I need to find a way of getting it set up in our lounge as it feels "wrong" locking myself away in the bedroom to use it.

You need to
a) Stop taking pictures upside down, you belm
b) Get a phone that doesn't lie about the orientation

It's definitely not a. And b seems to be an intermittent lie, as it only happens sometimes.

Hmmm, I've realised it only happens with landscape photos. I orient the phone so the volume buttons are on the top (the + takes pics). I'm sure if I took the photo with the volume buttons on the bottom it would be fine, but that's the wrong way around and no other website has this issue.

I'm sticking with noob coding error :D

First impressions:

Pros:
The headset is lighter and more comfortable than the Vive
Easy to set up (once I got an HDMI to DP adapter for my monitor)
SDE is less than the Vive
Oculus UI and store works well

Cons:
No room scale (yet)
No hand controllers (yet)
SteamVR compatibility is a bit hit and miss
You can't set it up if your GPU only has one HDMI port (doesn't come with any adapters)

Bundled with Lucky's Tale which is a cutesy platformer. The protagonist looks like Tails from Sonic but with just one tail. Plays a bit like Mario 64 and works surprisingly well.

I tried a couple of VR experiences and they were as you'd expect, much like the Vive and Gear.

iRacing works, but I'm going to have to do a bit of work with the settings (currently getting 50fps with just my car and the track) and seat positions for each car.

Going to try Elite Dangerous tonight, hopefully.

I'm pretty sure there's a problem with beex not supporting the EXIF orientation flag.

That was rotated via an EXIF editor before uploading, but displays without rotation. Beex doesn't honour the EXIF orientation setting. Your phone camera must not be setting it, and instead just rotating the JPG data itself. Not all phones / camera apps work that way, however.

It's Myp's phone, then? You'd think someone would have mentioned that ;)

Myp's phone is outputting technically correct files that Beex can't display correctly. But I forget what kind of correct that is.

No, Myp's phone is outputting technically incorrect files with a note that says "this is wrong, fix it for me" but Beex doesn't let anyone tell it what to do.

Glad we agree.

This is how you'd do it, I think. I typed this on my phone so there are probably mistakes, but there you go.

Code:
<?php

$exif = exifreaddata($file);
$orientation = $exif['orientation'];
$im = imagecreatefromjpeg($file);

switch ($orientation) {
    case 1:
        $im = imagerotate($im, -90, 0);
        break;
    case 2:
        $im = imagerotate($im, 180, 0);
        break;
    case 3:
        $im = imagerotate($im, 90, 0);
        break;
}

imagejpeg($im, $file, 100);

It's not exactly complicated.

I gave project cars a try in VR yesterday. (51% off
In summer sale)
Was impressive. And loud. I want a wheel now, elite pad just wasn't quite cutting it.

Yeah, it's transformed iRacing for me. Being able to judge distances is wonderful, and the immersion is brilliant - you're actually there in the car! I've not given pCARS a go yet (or Dirt Rally), but I will get around to it soon.

More comparisons with the Vive: there's a larger nose gap at the bottom that lets light through. It's fine once you're concentrating on what you're using, but at first it's very noticeable. It's also not comfortable to use with my glasses, and the Vive was fine for that.

Vive is rather adjustable*, allowing for glasses, surprised if there isn't a similar thing for the Rift.

* the discoverability is poor though, if you don't read the manual, you'd never know it's there.

Yeah, I've adjusted it, just isn't as comfortable really. Reading up it does appear the Vive is better in that regard. Good job I'm not super blind really. Sal is fine as her glasses are quite small, but mine are relatively chunky and I just can't get a comfortable fit.
