Arrived.

It is... Not small.

Then ten minutes after it arrived, DHL texted me to tell me they were going to deliver today.

It's like being there. With quite shit eyesight, admittedly.

First thing I did was visit a beautiful hillside with an accordian/dog. Which was squeezey.

Then I played an awesome 3d bullet hellebore shooter, where my hand was the ship shooting things. Was awesome.

Then I got put in charge of a catapult destroying explosive towers. Most I've grinned in a long time.

Had to try that one again. Twice..

Finally, before I had to go, I hot put in the solar system as some kind of giant and threw planets around 。which isn't as fun as it sounds as physics objects only substantiate whet n you pick them up in that.

Felt a little squeezey afterwards, which is perhaps concerning, given I'm probably one of the l East bullet to motion sickness type of malt man that d one might ever hope to meet man that's is. Man.

Although I found that first time in phone vr, but never again.

If anyone wants a try, and can get to southwest London, I'm shirt I can accommodate somehow.

Not so much. It's quite mechanical

Having got back, tried a little more. In the hub arrea, picked up a toy spaceship and lozzed it across the room, as you do.
Only to find accordioor tried to, anyway. n/dog run after it and return it to me.
Repaired a robot from portal 2. Or tried to, anyway.

I've played portal/portal 2 a few times, but bugger me, the scale of the characters is... large. On your standard FPS it doesn't really come across at all - they look tiny, but face to face. Yeah, Not tiny. Not tiny at all.

Also played some kind of tower defence by way of archery Was fun. Fairly shallow, but fun.

I have picked up my Rift, pleasingly the box isn't filled with bricks and was still sealed.

Just a shame my GTX980 doesn't arrive until Tuesday.

Tried out Space Pirate Trainer.

So. Damn. Cool.

I will have to clear out the play area a bit more though, as I'm just going to end up destroying something while avoiding being shot as it currently is.

A couple more days of fairly light use in

Yeah, I can see how people might have sickness problems with free movement. Played a game called spell fighter vr or some such. Appeared in it and was immediately whisked off my feet because my finger was resting on the left touch pad and sent me flying into a wall. That didn't feel quite right. You can move via teleportation, but wanted to try a more traditional movement style.

Unfortunately, this had taken me away from the tutorial text wall, so I had no idea what I was doing. Walked down a toad and got killed by a couple of skeletons and a gargoyle thing. Camera fell over. Again not quite right.

Appeared in front of the tutorial text. Which doesn't really help. But summon a few golem to help me. Go down Road again. Golem fail to do anything more than due. Quit out before a skeleton runs me through.

Comments: what seems like a typical FPS run speed feels really damn fast in VR. Needs toning down a bit. Similarly, running on the touch pad suffers from bring triggered on the lightest touch, when you don't really have somewhere to rest your finger while keeping track of where to touch. Many times I found myself sprinting off in some random direction, which isn't exactly plant. Yes. Plant.

Finally when moving deliberately, as that speed you unconsciously adapt and rebalance. And as a consequence try to fall over. Play with cushions around.

Think I could get used to it though. Have since watched a video to provide a better tutorial than the wall of text.

In other news, surgeon stimulator remains broadly unplayable in VR.

I've read various reports that reckon that it's rotational movement (and strafing) that causes VR sickness, and that forward/backward movement is generally OK. The problem being that in FPS games that haven't had VR controls thought through, you're usually rotating/strafing ever so slightly all the time you're moving forward/backward which is what causes the nausea.

It'd be interesting to see if they get it sorted out, as it'll add so much potential.

Not tried it yet, have been proper tired over the weekend and without my new GPU there seems little point in giving it a go anyway.

GPU should come either today or tomorrow so a trip report will follow - and I'm obvs. going to be bringing it into the office at some point for some reaction video amusements ;)

I had a go at VR on Sunday as part of my wander round all the mad art shit that's going on in Glasgow presently. First it put me in the position of a distorted woman masturbating, then the camera flipped viewpoint and I was staring at her vagina while she, I think, pissed on me. I give it a wobbly clitoris out of 10.

My GTX980 is here, so I'll probably be setting it up tonight and having a play.

Which, in light of Bamba's post, is probably sounding more disturbing than it should.

Had a quick play with the Rift last night.

Oddly enough, I'm not as wowed by it as I thought I would be, but I imagine that this is because I was familiar with the DK2.

It's become increasingly obvious that it needs some sort of touch controller like the Vive's wands, so they'd better hurry up with Oculus Touch.

It's also a little frustrating that I need to wear my specs in it, as it makes it significantly harder to take on and off - I need to get some smaller specs I think.

Played elite, tilt brush and job simulator last night.

Elite was pretty impressive, more so than I found gazchaps dk2. (although that may just have been setup issues). Although when I started, I was sat behind the cockpit chair... If I wanted to sit in the cockpit chair, I needed to sit in the real life wall...

Tilt brush was so very pretty.

Job simulator... Amusing, but not something I imagine I'd return to overly much.

I've watched quite a lot of Job Simulator on YouTube; it's actually a pretty good demo of the whole concept of the Vive I thought and there's obviously a lot of work gone into it but it looked like it needed to be 'gameified' more to flesh it out. There doesn't seem to be any sort of challenge to it or over-arching objectives or any of that kind of thing.

Being able to read the text without squinting makes a massive difference as far as immersiveness goes, although my experience on Monday night was soured by having some difficulty getting the Steam version of E:D to show up on the Rift - in the end I had to download it on Oculus Home and run it from there.

There's a "Reset HMD Orientation" key that you can bind in E:D (defaults to F12) which will probably sort that out.

Yeah, F12 did the trick, but it was quite disconcerting, and I'd have expected it to autochanger to begin with.

Wow, Space Pirate Trainer is amazing! The first game I've played properly where it's felt fully immersive. It was kind of strange taking the headset off at the end and being back in my living room :S

Minecraft VR is now out for the Gear VR.

I've only got a crappy bluetooth controller at the moment (new one arrives tomorrow providing the birthday fairy can follow very explicit instructions) but to actually wander around in worlds you* have created is basically living in the future for me. Hoverboards can go and fuck themselves.

*ok mainly my daughter.

I think so far I've been a little short sighted with VR. Like a pleb I've been thinking only of gaming. After spending a good chunk of the day watching Youtube videos and reading though I've realised that VR may be a way for me to experience things I would not have. Like going on something like The London Eye, for example.

It's definitely something I want to at least try, so I've ordered about the best cheap/comfy Cardboard headset I could find (it was £16). I figured that it should at least give me a taste of the things VR can deliver without much risk. I must say I do like the cinema apps, that could be great for bedtime movies.

So yeah I got the PS4 controller paired but it didn't actually work properly.

However yesterday I took delivery of a StratusXL which is a very well made piece of kit and works perfectly.

Minecraft in VR is quite something to behold. The sense of scale is the biggest thing - having a dog wander up to you feels like it's at the right height and scale and the blocky little bastards seem so much cuter nuzzling away at your virtual groin as a result.

Yeah, this could be the thing that sells it to a lot of people.

I watched a really interesting video on YouTube the other day all about VR and how it doesn't work with all our senses which is why it never really seems real enough. It's on MetalJesusRocks YouTube channel if anyone is interested. He had a great guy on from Rabbit Engineering who clearly knows his stuff.

Yeah, it really is the sense of scale with VR that is what most people are unprepared for. Seeing GLADoS at full size for the first time was terrifying.

The most notable thing about it was that it's the first vr game I've played which features humans.

Which in this case were completely unresponsive. And able to put your head through. Needs AI.

I suspect that it may become the pub leaching simulator of choice for a certain demographic.
