Aw thanks Meems! I looked like that 5 years ago but sadly am a flabbier version now lol, and giving up the fags hasn't helped on that front. I still go to the gym 4 times a week but have to concentrate on CV rather than my beloved weights. I have to get back to how I was though since Teen Angel 2 has booked me into the Manchester half marathon with her next May, we're running for MS! (I ain't no runner lol, will be begging for tips from Kov & Co pretty soon ) You'd love bikes Meems; you're an adventurous, fun, extrovert person. I'll take you on the CVO if you like, despite looks she's actually a great big, friendly pussycat; a real softie. |

Old Man Afterthought is looking to replace the Bonneville. He's thinking about a GS, on the grounds that "one screamed past me yesterday at about 120" and he wants "shaft drive and a gear indicator". Which is an odd combination of requirements. |

At 10m26s if you took a right turn you'd be about 50 yards from our front door My drive to work every day is basically the TT course from 10m26s to 16m55s, where I take a left but he carries on to the Grandstand. (It's a 30mph zone until just out of Ramsey at the Hairpin, and then a 40 into a 30 at the Douglas end at Hillberry, but basically the whole drive is on derestricted roads.) You'd not get me on a bike again these days, I did have a 1985 Yamaha FZ750 for a couple of years in 1997-1999, got that out to 145mph along the mountain mile, which is a pretty scary speed - you become acutely aware that any tiny little thing going wrong is basically going to result in your horrible death. I do admire the titanic balls of the TT riders - it's just shy of 38 miles per lap, and most of it is horrendously unforgiving in the event of a mistake being made or mechanical failure - incredible stuff really. |

Yeah, but this is obviously as extreme as it gets. It's always a difficult one, this. I'm a biker through-and-through; it's in my veins, I've been on a bike since 16 (and before then if we're counting old field-hacks), I simply cannot imagine being without that buzz - even just riding briskly down a fast, gently twisting A-road with the smell of Spring in my nostrils and the sun on my back, as is my wont these days. (My days of absolutely thraping a sportsbike scaring myself shitless are behind me, but fond memories nonetheless). But, it is bloody dangerous, and as hypocritical as it undoubtedly is, I (successfully) did all I could to prevent the Teen Angels becoming bikers, albeit #2 has always loved a pillion ride on mine, just the same now as when she was 8. I feel I can legitimately take my own risks but have a duty of care to others; I try not to blindly evangelise about bikes at least without pointing out their dark side, as there obviously is a dark side. This can be mitigated by riding carefully of course; when I offered a ride to Mimi earlier I was thinking a very gentle 30mph trundle around some rural backroads near the cottage or wherever, on my big ol' Harley which, at 800lbs, noise like thunder and super-bright LED headlamp is hard even for myopic, idiotic, non mirror watching car drivers to miss (fucking twats) - but it does occasionally happen. I suppose when all is said and done, I just think it's worth the risk - for me. |

Yep, didn't have anything better to do so made some sandwiches and set off for a ride round. Had lunch sat by one of the reservoirs, read for a while and then came home on a more southerly route. I've done closer to 300 in the past, heading up by Snowdon then down the coast to Aberystwyth then home. |

Awesome. Not quite in the same league ( ), but I took the Hog to Knutsford on Saturday. Done 600 miles now (hampered by the shit summer), but she's loosening up real nicely now. I just love the heaps upon heaps of torque on offer almost irrespective of RPM; that satisfying "drrrrrRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!" when giving loads of right hand; that massive air filter audibly sucking great lungfuls of induction air, effortlessly cranking it up down the gentle, fast left and right handers en route. No car can ever make me feel like that; it was a good day to be alive. |

To celebrate my 1℅ pay rise, I've been typing stuff into insurance quote engines. Here's what I found, only variable is the bike: ER5 (500cc, 50bhp) fully comp £82 CBR600F (600cc, 85bhp) fully comp £86 GSXR600 (600cc, 93bhp) £246 CBR900RR (929cc, 123bhp) £646 Quite the jump, adding 50℅ more power. |

How the hell on earth are you meant to screw the battery leads to the battery terminals? The battery sits under the seat, the leads need to be screwed on through a hole on the terminal, but how do you hold the nut up, to get the screw through? Should I use matchsticks or paper, or what? Or just biy a different battery? (The terminal is an upside down squate U shape wivvan ole in it). |

I think Wookie or Grim... are your best bets here mate, I have all the practical sense of a small houseplant. Can't you get Mrs A to hold the battery up slightly whilst you connect it, then drop it into place? Anyhoo, can't wait for the bike season to start - my clutch hand is twitching with anticipation! |

Glacier like progression with Erfive, drained oil and changed filter. Battery still needs to go in. I had a helper, and I learnt the lesson of never saying "sometimes, the best tool to fix things with is a hammer" as she said, "Ok, i fix light", and smashed the indicator off, so that has been electrical taped back on. Again. She had a sit on the bike and said it was a bit high, but she is almost as tall as Melandri and he copes. |

I think those old street fighter look Speed Triples look well cool (not in satin pink though lulz you'd have to factor in reprinting!) Ride first though; they're deeply unforgiving and top heavy. I hated my one to ride, and it nearly killed me a couple of times! |

I doubt I would like the insurance costs, either. I have just about talked myself into getting rid of Erfive and replacing it with CBR600F*, as I could commute on it and use it as a toy, and I have a lot of faith in Mr Honda and his engines. The board has rolled her eyes a bit so I will see what "I've got £800 and a two cylinder Kwak" does in Opening Negotiations. *Yeah, I know, but I'm not paying £600 more for insurance for a fireblade, and although an Enfield Bullet woyld be a laugh. Have to think about The Rover, too. |
