Timeline so far:

Quote:
Half Life 2 received a big 3GB update, which failed at around 700mb for every user. The update made the game run in Korean for every user. Someone at Valve said "whoops".

Shortly after this, the Steam support account on Twitter makes what appeared to be a little joke by tweeting "Prepare for unforeseen consequences" in Korean.

Today, it was discovered that the TF2 update inside Surgeon Simulator contains a hidden puzzle on the bottom of an item, with more Korean text. This has been in the game since the 21st June.

The Surgeon Simulator guys tweet acknowledgement of the puzzle.

The Korean text in the puzzle reads "The time is". (People are quick to point out those are some of the first words in Half Life - "The time is 8:47AM")

Here's the puzzle:

Surgeon Simulator 2013 is a little indie game that had some Valve-themed DLC a week ago, allowing you to play as the Medic operating on the Heavy.

NeoGAF and rllmuk are going nuts. There's all sorts of crazy stuff tumbling out. The thing is, the Portal 2 reveal ARG was so obscure, the crazy stuff could easily be exactly right, and it'd just look like crazy until we know for sure.

For example, look closely at that image. There's a very vague coastline on it. Here's an enhanced image and a real-world coastline:

Attachment:
ZmbJzES.jpg

The ringed area is a military port and shipyard that was called during WWII and the Cold War by it's code-name: Shkotovo-17. 'Shkotovo' means 'city'. This is, perhaps, the real world location of HL2's City 17.

It's definitely it. It's definitely not Valve trolling us or the fevered dreams and shattered hopes of a million Half-Life fans.

Valve's thirteen-year old game, Ricochet, had an update on Steam yesterday. It now has Steam achievements. Three Steam achievements.

It's an open running joke between Valve and its fans that "Ricochet 2" is the code-name for Half-Life 3.

Man, I love all this kind of shit. I'm far too dumb to actually work any of it out myself but thoroughly enjoy watching it all unfold via other people's brains. If this really is the ARG leading to Half-Life 3 it's likely to dwarf any of the previous stuff in complexity so I have high hopes for the entertainment it'll bring.

I did end up pretty bored by Half-Life 2 the actual game mind you so weirdly I might be anticipating the announcement process more than the game itself!

Looking at the daily reddit posts that speculate about HL3, I'm pretty sure that when it does happen the internet will implode. Only a crowbar will remain.

Having said that I replayed episode 2 lately, and even I'm a bit... come the fuck on.

I've always thought that Half Life 2 has been elevated to a status somewhat beyond that which it deserves, certainly if you replay the game again today it really has aged quite badly, and a lot of the stuff that made us go 'Oh my how amazing' in 2004 doesn't stand up to scrutiny today.

Even at the time I felt it was a game built around several brilliant showpiece areas with a whole load of dreary padding inbetween, (the rubbish airboat sequences and endless antlions on the beach for example), although the expansions did improve somewhat on this side of things.

IIRC I didn't even complete the game on my first playthrough, and had to return to it again a bit later on to get the motivation to complete it.

Moderately interested in the prospect of Half Life 3 but gaming has moved on an awful lot and Valve need to recognise this, plus I hope they're not just using another iteration of the Source engine because that's not up to the job any more either.

I'm sure the commercial and critical flops of Half-Life 2 episodes 1 & 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Portal 1 & 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Dota 2 proves that Valve have lost touch with what gamers want since 2004.

It's confirmed that Valve are working on Source 2. Also, Dear Esther called and said you're incredibly wrong about Source 1.

Black Mesa is a remake of the original Half Life game in the newer Source engine. This is a sprucing up of the graphics in Half Life 2. Google is a search engine which can help you answer these questions, along with actually reading the posts people type out.

Hello.

There's no new Half-Life 3 news.

But I've downloaded Half-Life 2, both episodes and Blue Shift for pennies in a sale.

Question: But first an opinion: I think Half-Life 2 looks really pretty with everything turnt up. But can it get prettier? Another question: does anyone have any mods that they can recommend to make Half-Life 2 extra nice looking? Some more questions: if anyone responds, how easy is it to install mods for it? I downloaded the STALKER best of the best mod and that was super simple. I download something, double clicked the downloaded file and it did all the leg work. Will this be the same for your suggested mod of choice? Is there, just like STALKER, a go-2 mod of choice for Half-Life 2? The best of the best mod, if you will?

Yours eagerly awaiting your response. I love you, whoever replies.

Ian

SteamPipe's a Valve thing; as long as you've got HL 2 + EP1 + EP2 installed from Steam and have run them recently you'll have the 'Steampipe' version. The only other stuff you apparently need (aside from the mod installer itself) is:

Source SDK (SDK, Base, Base 2007) installed (you can get them in Steam->Tools).

So i've been doing a tiny bit of research and the two main graphical updates are Half-Life 2: Update on steam itself and the Cinematic Mod which Grim. . . linked above.

There's this youtube video comparing the original and the two mods. The "Update" mod isn't particularly special and just adds, like, um, bloom or something but the Cinematic Mod goes all out, adds furniture and some areas a hell of a lot looking at it. Mind you, the work done on the people's faces looks like dogshit. But anyway...

So I'm going to give the Cinematic Mod a try and see what comes of it. Apparently I download via torrent and then press setup and it works its magic. Fingers crossed.

I queued all the HL2 stuff up last night to download and install so would've been in a position to try it myself tonight, but then my PC decided it was going to be a dick so even if it did complete the downloads I'll probably spend more time fighting with the idiot thing tonight than actually playing games on it.

Also note that there's a couple of normal download links there if you get any issue with the BitTorrent version.

Post subject:  Re: Half-Life 3

It looked like you had to click each link for each part of the mod, which I couldn't be arsed doing, so it was just easier to torrent the damn thing. The torrent appears healthy enough although it is 17Gb of stuff being chucked down my wires. It has just taken 20 minutes to download which is pretty impressive work from virgin. Now, to hit the setup file somewhere in there...

Oh, wait, do you mean literally 17Gb? So just over 2GB in real money? That would certainly make the 20 minute download more realistic (and not actually all that impressive).

Aye, my maths puts that at under 2MB a second which is pretty shit (though obviously you're at the mercy of the seeders upload speed and it's not really attributable to Virgin themselves).

Gb is indeed smaller; eight times smaller to be precise. However, it turns out the download is actually 17 whole proper grown-up GB which makes you perfectly correct at being impressed by your download speed for that as it averages out at around 14MB a second. My connection on Sky Fibre tops out at about 4MB, for comparison. Noice!
