Ministry of Sound sues Spotify for allowing users to 'copy' its compilation albums

Ministry of Sound is suing Spotify for copyright infringement because the streaming service has allegedly refused to delete users' playlists that "copy" the tracklistings of its compilation albums.

The dance label is seeking an injunction forcing Spotify to remove these playlists and block any future playlists that attempt to replicate the running order of Ministry of Sound compilations, according to proceedings launched in the UK High Court on Monday (September 2).

Ministry of Sound's chief executive Lohan Presencer told The Guardian: "It's been incredibly frustrating: we think it's been very clear what we're arguing, but there has been a brick wall from Spotify."

Spotify has the rights to stream all the tracks on the playlists that Presencer wants removed, but Ministry of Sound is making a legal argument that the running order of its compilation albums can be copyrighted because of the skill and expertise required to assemble them.

"What we do is a lot more than putting playlists together: a lot of research goes into creating our compilation albums, and the intellectual property involved in that. It's not appropriate for someone to just cut and paste them," said Presencer. "Everyone is talking about curation, but curation has been the cornerstone of our business for the last 20 years."

A representative confirmed that Spotify has received the lawsuit, The Guardian reports, but declined to make any further comment on the issue. Ministry of Sound released its first compilation album, 'The Annual', in 1995 and since then the label, which remains independent, has sold over 50 million albums and singles worldwide.

Buh? That's like saying if you play an album off Spotify you're violating the copyright of the people who decided which way round the tracks should go on the album.

Ah, that old fallacy.

"If you don't do exactly what I want it must be because you don't understand or you're not listening; it couldn't possibly be simply because I'm talking a complete load of shite."

Sounds good! How was the match?

The Munster v London Irish preseason friendly I went to in Cork on Friday was great fun. A very fast moving game with many tense attempts at tries. The home team won 27-13.

After standing in a cramped bar on Sunday watching a Gaelic Football match, I think next time I'm here I'll go to the hurling.

Hiked to the impressive Cliffs of Moher today, but my cheap camera died on me and I'd left the good one in the car so had to resort to phonecam to capture them for posterity. Light was all wrong anyway, and the rain precluded a trip to see them reflect the sunshine, but there's always tomorrow for that.

I have a new mouse. It's another Logitech trackball that I've ordered for work.

My home one (same as Craster and some others from here I believe) had a fingerball control, but they've discontinued that model, so now I'm learning to use one with a thumb control. Feels a bit strange, but no doubt I'll get used to it.

It was easily the greatest thing I have achieved this week.

'Hello, my mouse was playing up earlie. I moved it to another port and now it is working again, but it might break again... *smile*'

I got a new PC in pretty much the same manner.

And a white board so I could draw cartoons of people

Going on holiday tomorrow. Ordered a few DVDs off Amazon to be delivered via Prime, so we'd have something to watch while over there.

Just got an email saying that they failed to deliver them.

How can you fail to deliver a DVD? Did they try putting them through the letterbox the wrong way? Useless arses.

Just returned from the Gros Islet street party. Left early as we are flying tomorrow. The place was pretty much stoned on ganja or pissed on rum with an MC shouting about dance competition s. If ever I needed Curio to do his Gangam those tickets would have been our prize. Lots of beautiful girls and beer was £1 a bottle. It was pretty good but weird as I still felt in the bubble. And everyone called me Charlie as I walked past.

If you're in prison that's probably your own fault at some level. Otherwise, you know where the door is. *points at nearest airport*
