Mains doesn't really scare me.. 360VDC does though, I always wear gloves and am super paranoid working with that.

I don't even want to feel a 24VDC shock if I can avoid it but one of the guys I work with has a bad habit of checking if a sensor is live by touching the 24V to the back of his hand.

Once out hiking I had to crawl under an electric fence to 'correct some navigational errors'. Mistimed standing back up and got a shock at the base of my spine. The shock pitched me forward quite a bit, straight into some mud!

I have had a mains shock before. Years ago I was trying to unplug my electric shaver from an extension lead tucked behind my telly. I was unplugging it with my left hand whilst holding on to a radiator with my right hand in order to balance myself over the top of the telly.

I interrupted my girlfriend from watching the aforementioned telly by screaming very, very loudly. I still have the exit wound permanently burned into my thumb.

Thinking about it, this was before the whole Zioette thing happened... could this be where my superhuman reproductive abilities came from?

That does at least look like the internal windows line up with the ones on the facade

I was always led to believe that you'd be earthed if you held onto a radiator and wouldn't get a shock?

Gargh! Just nipped to Morrisons (I'm off on holiday for a week, living it up). Mrs Bulge is having some mates over tonight and she wanted to buy some... Lambrini. We also bought some groceries, we're not animals. Got to the checkout and some little chubby lass wouldn't serve us without ID. I had mine (I'm 27). Mrs Bulge didn't have hers (she's 25). They would not let us have the booze.

Walked out and took our custom elsewhere. Ridiculous policy. "Challenge 25."

I thought it was the other way around - the electricity will take the easiest path, so if you're earthed you'll definitely get a shock as all the current will flow through you.

If the device you're getting shocked by is plugged into the mains and you're nicely earthed, you've just given live electricity somewhere to go and you're going to be getting a much nastier shock.

When you're working on a computer, you should always take off your ESD strap if you need to plug it back into the mains for some reason.

Well that explains that.

Also, WTB. They wouldn't serve you WITH ID? I'd be demanding to see the manager! There's no reason that they can't serve you if you can prove your age.

But the person he was with didn't have ID, and he could have been buying it for them.

It's not a good reason, but it is the reason he wasn't served.

Yeah but if he was going to share it with someone who might be underage they can refuse to serve - its a bit of a stupid rule to try and get people who buy alcohol to give to others , and I cant think of one situation where it would ever work because if thats what you were doing , you just have one person wait outside.

I'm sure there was something on one of the newspapers websites about it last year when a father was buying a few groceries and a bottle of wine and was refused because he had his daughter with him who was about 12 years old and they challenged that he was buying it for her and refused to serve him.

That's ridiculous and I would be all over that. I was once refused alcohol (even though I don't drink anyway) in an Asda. I had a conveyor belt full of shopping and the alcohol was the first to go through. I kicked off trying to get her to see sense but she wouldn't budge. I asked how old she thought I looked and if she honestly thought I looked under 18. She said no but the rules are rules.

I argued that the rules state I need to be over 18 to buy alcohol and, because she thought I was, there was no reason to not serve me. Anyway, she wouldn't so I left all my shopping on the conveyor belt and massive queue behind me.

This was on my 30th birthday by the way.

But you are allowed to buy alcohol for people under 18, (just checked 16/17 only) if they are going to have it with a meal with you...

Oh and I'm pretty sure you can have alcohol at 13 at home actually.

Maybe even as low as 5?

Ah

Quote:
It is against the law:

To sell alcohol to someone under 18 anywhere.
For an adult to buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of someone under 18. (retailers can reserve the right to refuse the sale of alcohol to an adult if they’re accompanied by a child and think the alcohol is being bought for the child.)
For someone under 18 to buy alcohol, attempt to buy alcohol or to be sold alcohol.
For someone under 18 to drink alcohol in licensed premises, except where the child is 16 or 17 years old and accompanied by an adult. In this case it is legal for them to drink, but not buy, beer, wine and cider with a table meal.
For an adult to buy alcohol for someone under 18 for consumption on licensed premises, except as above.

It is not illegal:

For someone over 18 to buy a child over 16 beer, wine or cider if they are eating a table meal together in licensed premises.
For a child aged 5 to 16 to drink alcohol at home or on other private premises.

Tip: If you want to buy booze, find someone on the check-outs younger than you are. The old dears in our local Waitrose are awful and although I have ID it's an embarrassment frankly.

That's right dear, I've just spent 25 quid on a bottle of wine to go and swig it back on the railway sidings with my mates*.

* Although I suspect this is the kind of thing Mr Chris did when he was 15.

This was on my 30th birthday by the way.

I was out shopping with my dad at a Tesco once, and the cashier woman refused to sell my dad the wine in his shopping basket because she assumed that I was under 18, and I don't carry an ID as such, being a non-driver. I was 28 at the time.

My girlfriend is ocassionally asked for an ID by old dears when buying Lottery tickets, which is a bit worrying. At least being German, she is used to carrying her papers ID card at all times.

Chinny's advice about making sure you are served by cashiers who are school-leavers is dead on. I must look ancient to a 17 year old; never had ID bother there.

Last time I needed an ID card to complete a purchase, I waved my concessionary bus card and claimed to be a well-preserved pensioner. The dumbfounded cashier just accepted it on the spot. (The card looks just like a pensioners' bus card, but is orange rather than blue, in case you're wondering.)

You can have a small text banner instead (which i have set) - its under profile / show colourful banner

If you are at work, you may need to tone down the title image.
