Aaru's Awakening is surprisingly fun. It's pretty rough around the edges and the controls are sometimes, by neccesity, the gaming equivalent of patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time but I've really enjoyed my time with it. You will die an absolute shitload while working out what each section requires and then executing it but I'm not finding it at all frustrating; largely because the checkpoints are very generous. It's the kind of game I would usually expect to hate but something about it's really sucked me in and I think I'm only two levels off finishing it. So, yeah, worth giving it a shot though I suspect it won't be for everyone.

Ooh, Unfinished Swan is the one weeks everything is white and you have a black paint gun, right?

Yep. It's tremendous fun for a while but does go downhill later on when the levels start using different techniques. I still thoroughly enjoyed it but it's not as good as that concept initially appear to be.

Ether One just fucked up real bad. NO INVERT? If it ain't on the update that's currently updating it can get fucked. An update which is, by the way, 3.448 GB. I don't know how many GB's are needed to invert control but I suggest that there's probably room in that update. The cunts.

FYI, if you play Ether One without the patch you don't get any indication on the keyboards that you use that you're on a particular key. It's just broken. Anyway, I suppose you had to download it to play it so it's probably expected that you'll have to download the patch.

Anyhoo that not the main problem now. Here's a few: it's fuck ugly, it's slow as shit, the textures are rubbish and, most of all, YOU HAVE TO CHANGE IT TO INVERT EVERY TIME YOU LOAD IT UP. Honestly, it's just astonishing in this day and age that this is a thing.

If you use an antiquated control method you should expect antiquated graphics.

There's a reason no games default to an inverted y-axis.

No games default to 'your mum' either but she remains the popular choice.

i don't quite get what you rpoint it. It never was default.

It's just some people find it more natural to use the controller to move the camera position, the others find it easier to move the target of the camera.

That makes sense, but only if you invert the X axis, too.

Tell it to aviation engineers. Stick goes up, plane goes down. Stick goes left, plane goes left. HOW FAR DOES THIS CONSPIRACY GO?!

Yes, yes. I am aware of difference between yaw and roll. At the end of rolling left, is the plane's heading now more left or more right than it was?

I reckon the divide is largely driven by people who had formative experience of a joystick with flight sims and it wired the brain that way. It would be interesting to see if the preference for invert-y is generational, as there are a lot less flight sims around now than there were 20 years ago.

It's an important distinction, I think. The twisty-motion of the plane gives you the idea of something pivoting around its centre point, so it makes sense that "back" is "up". Maybe normals think they're pointing a gun sight, but inverters think they're controlling a vehicle of sorts.

I would also be interested to see if there were a generational change.

I learend with a mouse inverted, then a pad inverted. And then strangely found that I needed a mouse not-inverted some time later.

I also don't think it had much to do with flight sims. As I barely played them. (And I'd say the similarity of a mouse and an actual plane yoke is sufficiently far removed that my familiarity with that would not come into play.)

I think it's because I was playing a PC First Person Shooter but I was visualising myself flying a helicopter so I needed to take into account Newton's Laws of Motion and my rear propeller.

Race the Sun is bloody brilliant! Best 'Indie' game I've played on PS4 yet.

Like Hohokum too and The Unfinished Swan, good batch of games this month.

Ether One is wank though.

Unfinished Swan is a lovely little game. Played race the Sun a little, but I find these sorts of infinite racers a bit frustrating to play, will give it another go.

Also, a bit late, but played Counter Spy a lot recently, it is great for the PSV with its pick-up-ability (except where the PSV loses network connection and abig box come on the screen saying as such, but the game doesn't pause, that's a bit crap).

You're missing out! Guacamelee is excellent! Metroidvania with satisfying combat, memorable bosses. Only marred by the odd bit of precision-platforming. But I completed it. And I'm shit at games.

Trudat. Guacamelee is absolutely brilliant.

I played a bit of the PS4 version (despite finishing it on PS3) just for the music. Which is jolly amazing.

After spending a few hours on Ether One and getting part way through the third level it's decided my save game is corrupt and won't load it up. I'm not entirely bothered by this because, while it had some nice ideas, it was a bit boring in it's execution. There was just too much (slow) wandering around the very similar looking levels trying to find either the (a) bits you hadn't explored yet or (b) that one place you were in half an hour ago that had the puzzle you've now got the solution item for. The mine level was particularly bad for this and I got really annoyed at just wandering around the same bits over and over again before finally finding the final ribbon. It's a shame because the way the puzzles were integrated into the setup and the story pieced itself together as you explored was very well done I thought and, unlike Sat, I quite liked the visual design. If the levels were smaller and tighter, or just less generic so you could easily build a mental map of where you were, it could've been really good fun. I'll probably watch a Let's Play of it at some point to see where it all goes because I am kind of intrigued by it all but apparently not enough to play through it all again.

For all I like me some indie nonsense, and the so-called AAA market gets a deserved kicking for their conveyor belt nonsense at times, it's becoming increasingly clear that the promising indie stuff is very often totally hamstrung by, I'm presuming, lack of resources to give them the polish they deserve and, equally, just not enough eyes on the things to point out the often glaring flaws in design and playability. Obviously I'm not arguing for some CoD-like design by committee bullshit or anything, but I think often times the focussed vision of a small team or individual can be ruinously myopic.

Anyway, that out of the way I started on HoHokum last night and, so far, I'm fucking loving it. It's utterly relaxing and lovely to play and so far it hasn't landed on the wrong side if impenetrable in terms of working out the puzzles. They're just obvious enough that you need to pay close attention to the things going on but I haven't felt frustrated by them yet. Granted I think I've only found four or five of my snake mates so it could go downhill after this but I doubt it. It also means my PS4 and TV are doing double duties as incredibly expensive pet toys as one of my cats loves it. She's never paid any attention to the happenings on the TV at all before but has decided that Hohokum's undulating snakes are the most fascinating thing in the world. Really good stuff all in and much more fun that I expected.

I like that game. Played it at EGX I did. If only Nuclear Throne would come out on PS4, I'd be happy.

Slightly tempted to resub by Ground Zeroes but I promised myself I wouldn't so I could spend some time on my PC pile of shame and that's what I'm going to do. My three months of PS+ was excellent and massively worth the money it cost me but if I resub I'll never get any PC stuff played.
