Apparently, you pull up a map highlight where you want to go and then the world generates the red path for you on the scenery like before. And apparently it doesn't work as might as hoped.

Mini quests involves: 1) get to this point as fast as you can 2) climb a building as fast as you can.

The link above says that they're bland but I can't think of much else you can do with the core mechanics. If you make the running and jumping acebest then these mini games should be a pleasure to play not a chore.

The code generating a red path <<< A handcrafted red line.

well Burnout Revenge was "an entirely linear game. A to B. And finding the fastest, most elegant route between them."

And Burnout Paradise was "an open world game [with] the majority finding the easiest route between A and B."

Burny P was great (although I actually prefer Revenge for its linearity).

5 minutes of the game cut down from a mission in the game.

The lens flare is off the scale and it looked a confusing mess to navigate. Plus I hate cut scenes. And people talking in your ear.

My thoughts as I had them:

Punching. Good.

Please tell me I did not just see a third person cinematic takedown.

OK this is more like it.

There's a few tweaks to some of the core moves, looks a bit more streamlined/automatic, but it's not inherently a problem. The new roll looks wrong though.

It's a very shiny game, but what they are showing here misses the mark of the minimalist colourful beauty of the the original.

Ah I guess the green is nice. Really I want to see daytime.

These cutscenes won't just be the the trailer right? Seems like a mistake. I should never leave Faith's perspective.

Combat clearly is improved, which they did need to do. I hope it's not going to be more combat focused. Combat should be the obvious solution, not the only one.

Overall feelings are apprehension, reassured about some elements, and wishing they let me consult on it.

Hopefully it will be more of the puzzley "How the fuck am I going to get there" than the annoying combat. I liked standing up high and tracing out courses in my mind..

Gotta say, it looks bloody good though.

I signed up earlier today. Although I don't usually bother with betas because I don't give a shit about online gaming the online component here is basically negligible so it's a way to get a free early shot at the single player game.

I just got an email welcoming me to the closed beta mentioned above, so that's nice. Though it finishes on the 26th and I'm away most of the weekend so might not get much time with it. They also gave me a code to get another person in on the PS4 so does anyone want it?

Re-reading it I see how it's probably easy to get that impression. :) And I'm a bit concerned that it'll somehow end up needing a PS+ sub to use which would actually lock me out anyway.

Right, just played this for 45 mins or so, here are my thoughts.

I don't like the "improved" graphics. I liked the style of the original far better than this. This one feels like they have tried to make it more photo realistic and it doesn't work for me. I really loved the anime sort of feel to the original.I kinda smell Battlefield 3 :S
It is definitely Mirror's Edge and I already feel right at home. Can't say I care for the combat too much and found the tutorial rather boring as I would much rather be running. For some reason the thrill and element of danger thus far seems to be a bit lacking compared to the original. I did find one moment when I was standing really high (before a large slide) and that was pretty cool but yeah, definitely prefer the original. However, as I said it definitely feels identical to the original but I just think in this case the graphics really didn't need "improving" and certainly not like this.

Obviously I have only played it for 45 minutes so my opinions are probably going to change :) I also found it annoying that I have my Origin username and "BETA" bouncing around the screen.

The story seems sound enough though, and hey, it's definitely Mirror's Edge.

*PC related stuff*

There are some issues with the textures and Vsync and Freesync are not working, as the game is tearing no matter whether it's disabled or enabled. However, performance seems to be pretty good running it maxed out on a single Fury X (crossfire disabled).

Ahhhhh there are a lot of bad things in the beta.

The visuals are so messy. I loved the clean minimalist look of the previous game, but they've thrown it in the bin.

They removed the backflip (unless I need to grind XP to unlock it because it's 2016).

There’s a mission where I keep getting interrupted with “Mission Failed” because I’m running away instead of fighting.

I didn’t think it would be possible for the writing to have less subtlety than the first game.

I’m reserving judgement til I’ve played more, but I’m pretty sure they’ve fucked it.

My first 45 minutes

I enjoyed the first game - however my biggest complaint about this one is i often die and then re-do the same thing multiple times then succeed with no real clue on what i did differently

Quitting and reloading the game fixed the vsync for me. Gameplay seems to run at a smooth 1080p @ 60 fps on Ultra on my GTX970. Cutscenes a very jerky, though.

Well, I think it looks amazing. It doesn't look realistic at all, rather it has a more airbrushed look to it than the original, which I think is perfectly legit and fits with the sci fi setting IMO.

Airbrushed = fuzzy to me. The original was crisp and the clarity of the objects was fantastic mostly because they had not put on textures. Or had, but kept them simple (so performance was great).

I dunno man, still think the original looked better. The original felt a lot more "Airy" too.

I think I have worked out why Catalyst doesn't look anywhere near as good. Firstly I've noticed a pattern in the first game where they only seem to use so many colours for an entire level. Like this.

Image

And this. This is much darker, but seems to follow the same trend.

Image

As I also mentioned, the thrill aspect that the original had just doesn't seem to be there so far. I mean this, this was edge of your seat this.

Image

There is absolutely no doubt, the original was far better looking. Whether that was by skill or fluke? I don't know.

The more I hear, the more my heart breaks.'

I'll buy it so I can experience all the fun of the Prince of Persia sequels though.

Thinking about it, this is why Dark Souls was so successful. They kept making the game they wanted until the public 'got it' rather than trying to make a game the public already 'get'.

It's not a bad game dude but so far it's not a patch on the original. The original was really really tough to get to grips with and had a very hard learning curve. I don't know if it's because I played the original so much or whether I just know what I'm doing but this one feels a lot easier and I fall a lot less than I used to. That's good in some ways (I don't get annoyed and my heart rate doesn't go up) but part of what I loved so much about the original was the satisfaction I felt when I'd absolutely fucking nailed a set of obstacles.

It was that "stop start" mentality that I really enjoyed. Having to stop and look around was wonderful. This one though? it just wants you to keep going. There really doesn't seem to be much to stop and look at tbh.

It's very close to a Prince of Persia [2008] to the Sands of Time of the original game.

Hmm, looking at those images, might it be more of a level design issue? I would agree that the world in the new game seems more bland, but it seems to be more of a structural thing, if you know what I mean.
