No, you don't like that, you like killing people, in graphic detail, in slow motion.
And you want to hear swearing while you do it.

You're a gamer, see.

New trailer in that link.

The bullet points:

1) Open World.

That is all.

No hang on, let's delve deeper.

I dare anyone to watch that for more than 10 seconds without stabbing themselves in the eyes and ears and losing any interest in Mirrors Edge 2.

More conceptual gameplay(?).

I like the music in this a lot.

All they really needed to do was take the engine from ME, keep the gameplay the same only make the game about ten times longer.

I played ME again a couple of months back and it still looked very current and relative.

The only thing I didn't like about ME was how short it was once you master it. It was a bugger to learn, but once you were the Karate Kid it all went by a bit quick. Oh, and it was a teeny weeny bit linear too.

Anyway, I'll tell you what will ruin this:

1) EA
2) DICE
3) Hacking. It's bound to have some in it and some ridiculously shit hacking subculture.
4) Tech. They'll go out of their way to introduce some kind of tech thing into it. Probably a new way of hacking.
5) It'll be bland. Again. Faith is not interesting and neither is the world she inhabits. You want evil corporations ruining the world - see Half Life 2, Dishonoured and some other games. This will be generic crap with a massively convoluted storyline. DICE can't do world building or stories.

Anyway, it'll look nice, no doubt, and the core gameplay will probably be the same and decent fun too. I'm not holding out much hope for a deeper gaming experience until it's done and someone plays the thing.

Hmm. Wasn't the original DICE and EA though? I mean even with a major cock up its ass it was still a damn good game !

It was an ok game with terrible combat and questionable "boss fights". It also suffered from a bland story and terrible comic book cut scenes. Let's not go nuts.

Well I liked it. Was a breath of fresh air. Not many 1st person platformers out there, though Dying Light is good.

Mirror’s Edge was amazing, you fools.

I believe it was also one of the best 10 games of all time.

I agree with Sir Coffey.

It's a game you fear going after a more shooty audience.

The 'complete game without using guns' cheevo remains the best cheevo.

I did do that in the first one.

But you can see the typical Publisher logic - Game didn't do as well as we hoped, therefore MORE GUNS. Everyone loves guns.

It was a long time ago I played this but I don't remember the 'combat' ever actually being a problem, despite how much everyone always moans about it. Yeah, it's tacked on and pointless but it was barely a wrinkle in an otherwise awesome game and never really detracted from the whole experience for me. I do worry that the sequel will ruin things by shoving in more shooting and nonsense but I'm gagging to see what they can do on current gen hardware with a visual design that still ranks among the prettiest computer generated world I've ever clapped eyes on.

On the left, EA's CEO.

On the right, the baddy from Mirror's Edge 2.

Hmm.

For the most part I just ran like the clappers when it became more combat orientated. I only killed when I absolutely had to and had exhausted all attempts to just run away.

I loved the original. Not liked, loved. There were moments in it that were completely unforgettable. Like the bit where you enter a room and soon realise you have to master this mother of all structures. I'm afraid of heights, and this bit really pushed me to the limits. Not going to lie I fell, a lot. But each time I edged that little bit higher I got a real sense of achievement.

That was the magic of this game. The puzzles and how you had to overcome them. It was almost like a wave in space invaders.

Never finished the original because the game slowed to a crawl on a sniping mission. I never understood why, because it was running flawlessly until then.

But i just can't see to get hyped for anything nowadays. Maybe because i only buy the games about 4 years after when they're about 5€.

Really, it's open world? Open world? (I can't click the links at the moment)

Nooooo.

Ya blew it, DICE, ya blew it.

What people want, and what makes a game great aren't always the same thing. This is going to be sonic all over again. Except with open world instead of speed.

I'm devastated.

(And I'll still buy it day one, and then be sad - as Grim said, the original Mirror's Edge is one of the best games of all time)

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time has meant that I give no quarter in matters like this. I'll buy it. Full price. I'll play it with open eyes. There success with ME1 guarantees that. I admit that I haven't actually read much about it.

But it's fundamentally a different game if it is open world. ME worked because it was an entirely linear game. A to B. And finding the fastest, most elegant route between them. An open world game will lead to the majority finding the easiest route between A and B, and then slagging the game off. People don't know what they want.

Unless it's open world like the Castlevanias. That'ld work.

I want to be wrong more than anything. ME is incredibly important to me. I pray I'm wrong. But I care too much to dare hope. Let alone have Faith.

Apparently, you pull up a map highlight where you want to go and then the world generates the red path for you on the scenery like before. And apparently it doesn't work as might as hoped.

Mini quests involves: 1) get to this point as fast as you can 2) climb a building as fast as you can.

The link above says that they're bland but I can't think of much else you can do with the core mechanics. If you make the running and jumping acebest then these mini games should be a pleasure to play not a chore.

well Burnout Revenge was "an entirely linear game. A to B. And finding the fastest, most elegant route between them."

And Burnout Paradise was "an open world game [with] the majority finding the easiest route between A and B."

Burny P was great (although I actually prefer Revenge for its linearity).

5 minutes of the game cut down from a mission in the game.

The lens flare is off the scale and it looked a confusing mess to navigate. Plus I hate cut scenes. And people talking in your ear.

My thoughts as I had them:

Punching. Good.

Please tell me I did not just see a third person cinematic takedown.

OK this is more like it.

There's a few tweaks to some of the core moves, looks a bit more streamlined/automatic, but it's not inherently a problem. The new roll looks wrong though.

It's a very shiny game, but what they are showing here misses the mark of the minimalist colourful beauty of the the original.

Ah I guess the green is nice. Really I want to see daytime.

These cutscenes won't just be the the trailer right? Seems like a mistake. I should never leave Faith's perspective.

Combat clearly is improved, which they did need to do. I hope it's not going to be more combat focused. Combat should be the obvious solution, not the only one.

Overall feelings are apprehension, reassured about some elements, and wishing they let me consult on it.

Hopefully it will be more of the puzzley "How the fuck am I going to get there" than the annoying combat. I liked standing up high and tracing out courses in my mind..

Gotta say, it looks bloody good though.

I signed up earlier today. Although I don't usually bother with betas because I don't give a shit about online gaming the online component here is basically negligible so it's a way to get a free early shot at the single player game.

I just got an email welcoming me to the closed beta mentioned above, so that's nice. Though it finishes on the 26th and I'm away most of the weekend so might not get much time with it. They also gave me a code to get another person in on the PS4 so does anyone want it?
