<182410> for me now.
Two EXTRAs in one game which was nice, but also some stupid easy deaths.

Did they do anything outside of the Nemesis/Gradius series?

I wouldn't be too jealous, between the games on the Uni campus (no gambling) and the arcades and pubs of Lancaster (where I could gamble), plus I was travelling back to Manchester on a weekly basis for the scene down there, I basically achieved nothing other than racking up a huge amount of debt and abusing my body and mind in ways I had hitherto not imagined possible.

As crap as this sounds I can kind of see it in my head, it's like a floating mirage next to Turbo Out Run (the basic stand-up edition), but I can't actually describe it.

I definitely remember the Taxi pinball at one end of the row of machines, Turbo Out Run at the other, and three or four basic videogame cabinets inbetween, one of which was the shoot-em-up, which I seem to remember the Konami logo being part of.

If I'm entirely honest my entire tenure at Lancaster Uni was pretty flaky.

Yeah, shitloads. Axelay on the SNES is probably the next most famous one, but they made tonnes of arcade and MSX games before that. Xexex (their answer to R-Type), the Thunder Cross series and Space Manbow are their (other) crowning achievements, IMHOtep...

Edit: be sure to play the Japanese version if you check out Xexex, BTW! They took all the good weapons out of the overseas releases and added a health bar that drains really quickly on contact with anything, making it far worse than just having three lives.

Egads, what does a full MAME set run to these days in gig terms? Where did you get yours from? My last update is from Jan 2006.

I should probably have another look at it I suppose, since they have added some interesting 3D stuff over the years I believe, and hopefully modern PCs would actually be able to run them.

Introducing Dr Zoidberg and YOG, your guarantee of never getting first place in any week on a MAME challenge, even on the game you thought you were really good at :D

If you want all the .chd files for the newest games it's 20ish DVDs (google mame burners). I didn't bother so its just 11 for the standards ROMa which is plenty to keep me busy for the next few years. I did have a .138 set but managed to lose the disks :(

I have an i7 pc now so it will be interesting to see how that copes, and I need to fix my cabinet too. It's a shame to have that gathering dust in the garage.

Hehe, this will probably be my worst week by far. I haven't even beat my first score yet, and don't like the game enough to play it more than once a day anyway! :p

<21250> from me. Only had a brief chance to play it. From my 20 minutes or so I give it 702 Bananas. It's main problem is that it reminds me of far better games that I'd rather be playing.

Also the main character appears to be Mimi. I gave it 72 bananas extra for that.

Had a few more goes at this and can consistently score over 100K, but Zoidbergs score seems out of reach. Still, as no-one seems to like this one much I think I can assume there won't be a slew of last-minute miracle scores this time.....

I'm clearly not going to close the gap on you MrC, and yet somehow I'm still in fourth place, so I think I'll just stick on my current score this week :)

Flying Shark and Space Harrier are the games I'm really looking forward to on this challenge, I'm not familiar with Flicky so I'll reserve judgement on that one.

Frankly this was supposed to be my week and I'm fucked as soon as Flying Shark and Space Harrier have their turn. Not that I'm some kind of shallow high-score addict or anything (twitches)

Post subject:  Re: MAME Challenge

I *should* do ok on Flying Shark, but not on Space Harrier.
I fired up Flicky earlier and had a quick go - it's a bit odd and put me in mind of Chucky Egg - but have no idea what's a good or bad score. Who suggested this one, as I'd never heard of it.

So for week 3 we have Sega's Flicky , a game until recently I did not realise was an arcade machine as I'd only ever seen it on the Megadrive

Klov page is here : http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=7825

Quote:
Mama bluejay, "Flicky", must collect her chicks and lead them home. Watch out for the two cats who will send your chicks wandering aimlessly about or eat you if caught. Each level offers about a dozen objects to throw at and knock out the cats.

Main thing is to avoid the cats - get your long string of chicks following you and lead them to the door - the maps wrap around and you'll need that on later levels to get to some of the more restricted areas - when you run over an item you can hit jump to throw it at one of the chasing cats (and send them back to their box) - in between levels there is a bonus round where you catch the chicks in a net

Simple controls (just left / right and a button which jumps and shoots if you have an item) so very playable with keys

Post subject:  Re: MAME Challenge

Ok, that's it for me as I'm getting frustrated now, and will end up hurling the controller.

I know I can do a sub-20 second time for most of the first ten levels which gets you a 20k bonus each time, almost always with a full compliment of chicks on a single drop for about 9k. I don't think it's possible to go any faster on level 1 than 11 seconds, though I keep trying to beat it.
I know I can collect all of the birds on the bonus round which gets you 15k (fiendishly hard though), and I can also do sub-20s on quite a few of the teens but I just can't get them all together on a single credit.

If I did, I'd be close to half a million points by level 24.
