Not a huge amount more. It stores read/unread states for each feed, and lets you do things like pinning articles to read later, marking as read in bulk etc.

IMAP multi-way message and state syncing is a famously hard problem to solve robustly. All sorts of funky error conditions arise from lots of clients polling the server simultaneously eg. one client marks a message as read as another moves it to another folder. POP is a lot easier as it had an implicit 'data is only in one place at once' promise.

Really? I'd have thought that transaction locking was pretty much designed for exactly that problem.

I'm beginning to consider just giving up on RSS and not bothering to find a replacement. Most days I don't read the whole stream, and the blogs I always read I can always just bookmark. How are other people coping?

I've basically just stopped as well. The Old Reader is the nearest match I've found, and I don't really like that. It only contains the last 30 entries, rather than the last 30 days worth. And it's trigger happy as it likes to mark everything I so much as glance or click on as 'read', when I most definitely haven't read it :/

I've got The Old Reader set up exactly how I had Google Reader set up. I'm happy with it.

The Feedly Android app is working quite well for me after I set it up to mark articles as read as I sweep through the pages.

The browser plugins are not as nice, but I am fairly happy with them.

i transitioned to feedly. It's fine.

I'm still using the Google Reader app on my phone because it's a slightly easier interface to use with my fat fingers but The Old Reader does exactly what I want and I'm happy to move to it when Google Reader dies completely.

I'm most bothered about my phone app.

I've downloaded a few extra to see which ones deal with replacement Google reader feeds the best.

Giving 'The Old Reader' a try. Looks ok so far, although haven't tried it on my phone yet.

And now it too has gone.

I had a seamless move to feedly + Newsify.

Must cost a bit to host all these feeds if the old reader has gone then.

Apparently it was the amount of time the developers were spending on the site that's made them turn it into a private site, the blog doesn't mention money being an issue.

I think I'll have a browse on over there today and read what they've said.

Hmm, just been and read the blog, and it seems like they've made the right decision if they were working all their personal time. The poor guy said he worked through his anniversary on Sunday for example.

Yes, it is perfectly reasonable that a hobby site shouldn't take over their personal lives, and it is totally up to them what they do with it. I really don't want them killing themselves over a website!

However, they invited everyone to sign up, saying they were in it for the long hall and were a replacement for google reader, with promises of expansions and pay sites in the future, and welcoming everyone on board. Only 4 months later to then realise that it is too much work, so all those people they welcomed with open arms, can now fuck off...

Just use feedly, the app and the webpage both now work exactly like Google Reader and it seems like the 'biggest' alternative around so not likely to go under any time soon.

Have they stopped moving the list of feeds around on the left hand side of the page, based on whatever rules they think appropriate?

Just tried to login, I see they are still only providing a login based on the google account you are logged into at the time on that browser.
Useless to me i'm afraid. I have multiple google accounts for work and home, and always have three running at once.

To run one web based app, where no other applications I use have any issues?

How did you use Google Reader as it worked the same way surely?

Google reader didn't break when using the sync options of chrome though.

I use Chrome as my browser, on both my work machine and my home machine. On my work machine it is logged into my work gmail, on my home it is logged into my home gmail.
If I logged into Google reader at home, it would show my proper google reader account. If I logged into it at work, it would show my work account, which was empty and i'm fine with that.

However Feedly syncs via chrome. If I registered it on my work account, it broke the sync and wouldn't let me login to Feedly on my home machine, as it had a mismatch and expected me to be on the work account.
If I registered on the home machine, I could never logon to it from my work machine for the same reason, with the added benefit of any extensions, addons, browser additions that feedly put on (like that fucking little icon in the bottom of the browser) were impossible to turn off on my work laptop, as it synced the extensions, but not the settings, and I couldn't logon to feedly to change the settings, as I was on a different account...

Granted, some of that may well be fixed by now, but I can't be arsed to invest any time in finding out

I don't use Chrome which is why I'm struggling to understand this I think. So you can be logged into a specific Google account in terms of the browser session as per any other browser, but the browser itself can also be logged into a given Google account for syncing stuff and any mismatch between the two fucks things up for you? Or am I misreading you entirely?

Note though that feedly no longer uses any stupid browser extensions if that helps at all; that was a total deal-breaker for me on Firefox and the main reason I gave up on it initially but all that's gone now.

Almost. The session account for the browser, and the sync account are the same, and have to be to work.
What feedly did was assume that the first account you logged in with was your only google account, so that if you were logged in as a different account in chrome, it broke.

I suspect it was all fixed along with getting rid of all the extensions and crap like that, but like I say, I can't be arsed to check

So it looks like they sold The Old Reader after all, or at least got some investment.
