Hello.
I need a CB radio for my Range Rover, and an aerial. There are millions to choose from on eBay - what should I be looking for?

Breaker, Breaker, this is Papa Bear, we have a 10-4, over.

I have no idea. I'd imagine Mr ChinnyHill might be the expert here, although I seem to remember there being a different CB user on WoS.

40 or 80 channel, FM. You probably want a bolt on aerial rather than mag mount, and it's best to get one with a tunable balun and buy an SWR meter to tune it in.

I did a little bit of CB many many years ago.

I think it's licence free these days, but you need to get the right kit. I have a feeling that at some stage the specs and frequencies changed. There are also protocols for what channels you can use.

Right, plenty of Greek going on in this thread :)

Simpler - I just want to talk to my buddy, who is going to be in his Land Rover, and I'll be in mine.

Would this (plus £10 bendy aerial) do the trick?
We'll never be more than a mile apart, at the most.

Midland is certainly a name that rings a few bells. So it should be half decent.

And people say I'm an incomprehensible nerd.

Oh, no, wait, reprehensible. I get it now.

This sounds like a baddy in an Arabian Nights story. There is no way "Tunable Bulan" is a real phrase.

I've come across the word balun before but couldn't tell you what it was. Not without some sort of world wide spanning web-shaped information resource, anyway.

I think it's known as a "handle" in CB circles.

Are you going to be taking your trucking convoy anywhere nice Grim...?

'Tunable Balun' was one of the many monkey extras from the Jungle Book.

Tunable Balun was the name of Hitlers first cat, and lover.

Grim... tell us what you go for in the end- the whole kit and what you think of it when you get it working. I should probably get something like this.

If you are off-road a little handheld set might be cheaper and less hassle. The range should still be fine over a mile or so.

If the big set Grim.. is looking at is the same in-car stuff my friends used to have, it'll be 4 watts and be capable of going about 4 miles in the countryside.

I think you need a gun rack and a ten gallon hat as well.

Grim..., your codename/handle should be Roger.

"OK, Roger that, Roger"
"Roger"
"Roger"
"Yes?"
"Roger Roger"
"Roger"
"give 'er a Good Rogering, Roger. Roger?"
"Aye, Roger."

Roger is a strange name, isn't it? The more you say it the more alien it sounds, and the more strange it looks. Of course, there are bound to be loads of Rogers on the board now I have said that, but it just looks a bit wrong, like it should have a 'd' in it.

Oh, that isn't me saying it, it's Grim... under codename Roger, who is talking via CB radio to his friend (who, by sheer co-incidence is actually called Roger, but uses the codename 'Mighty Mouse'.
