500 GB is tough, especially when you share your PS4 with someone else. Our games-we-often-play-online working set must be 2-300 GB, right? GTA is 65-70 GB alone I think.

I suspect 1 TB is reasonable though. I've never deleted anything since putting in my 2 TB drive a year or so ago, so I probably over-ordered a little bit.

Traditionally I'd have precisely one game installed at any given time so even 500GB was overkill. With the advent of PSVR though I keep everything installed for the sake of other people coming round to play with it, but even at that I'm still nowhere near hitting the 1TB limit.

TBH GTA is the only big one, the others are fine. I can usually have 2 or 3 SP games installed and still have space for updates.

Where's the fun in that? :p

Once I said I didn't want to transfer over all the PS Plus games I've played for 30 seconds, there wasn't a whole lot to transfer between consoles.

Same. Which is why I left the 1TB drive in my Pro ;)

Ok, I have about 400 gig free, so I'll leave it now, and it can be a problem for future-Joans.

Isn't everything saved in the cloud anyway? I know that on the Xbox One, you can just sign in with your username and password and it will download everything for you including saves, the layout of your home screen and the association with which games you need to download. Doesn't the PS4 have this?

Something that is very definitely not backed up is savegames for any guest accounts ie. people without their own PS+ accounts.

Super-sampling mode coming to PS4 Pro with the next firmware update:

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/02 ... ware-5-50/

Assuming I'm reading it right, it means that any game which has a 4K mode available can have that turned on then sampled down to 1080p so you get a visual improvement even on a non-4K set. Although, as noted in the link, a lot of games offer this anyway as part of their Pro feature set so I'm not sure how much difference this will make. Also, if you have this switched on at system level will it over-ride the per game settings you choose i.e. if I choose in a given game to leverage the Pro horsepower to get 60FPS instead of more shinies then how does that interact with the system-level super-sampling choice?

This is because when setting up the Pro I made it my primary console, and the special guns pre-order bonus DLC is registered to me, so she could no longer access it under her gamertag on the older PS4. Sigh.

Yes. They work for the user who buys them on any PS4, and they work for anyone else on that user's primary PS4, but they don't work anywhere else. This is one important way in which disks are better if you have multiple PS4s.

The obvious counter example is: MrsDoc and I could co-op Far Cry 5 with a single digital purchase.

Yes, it would only work for one arrangement, but it would work. Note also you can change your primary freely (which is how we sorted out her issue today, I moved my primary back to my old PS4.)

In fact it suggests that there's no reason for the PS4 you normally use to be your primary one.

No. Most likely config in new house is my primary PS4 is in the living room and my PS4 in the mancave [1] is the secondary. But that's still limiting -- MrsDoc can't play much in there, should she want to.

[1] watch me somehow end up buying somewhere without a mancave now.

This is not true. My downloaded games work fine for The Grimlet on both of my PS4s.

Having to manually sync the saves to the cloud is annoying, though.

I think the 'pick the one your friends are on' is pretty much a given so I didn't go into that, and focused on which is the better bet for games. (Exclusives obviously being a major factor in that.)

Also back-compat got a mention but I didn't see it as a critical factor.

After their shitshow of a start with all the consumer-hostile bullshit the Xbox is now a very good platform with it's backwards compatibility and all that jazz. It's the games that matter though as you say and there's still not a single thing on the Xbox that would make me even consider buying one. Whereas last time around I was convinced relatively early on that it was worth owning both consoles to get access to their exclusives. I'm genuinely baffled by how this situation has arisen, what in the fuck are Microsoft doing?

Yes. I swapped HDMI cables and all was fine. Whether it was due to the new cable being shorter or something else, I don't know.

Post subject:  Re: PS4 confirmed

Black flickers like that are usually the HDMI doing the copy protection handshake again, which usually comes down to a dodgy connection. Re-seat the cable at both ends. If that doesn’t help, try another cable. It’s more likely to be the cable than the PS4 or TV.
