Didn't the Switch version have problems with the frame rate or has that been fixed now?

PS4 Firmware Update 5.00 Full List of Features Revealed

Sony’s outlined the full list of features that you can expect to find in PlayStation 4 firmware update v5.00, and it’s much the same as what leaked recently. To recap, the platform holder’s redesigning sub-accounts on the PlayStation Network to make it easier for adults to control what their children can and can’t see on the console.

It’s also adding in new language support, improving broadcasting features, and revising the Quick Menu so that you can access your Notifications without quitting your game. Other features that it’s adding include a new Friends List management tool which will allow you to create custom groups of buddies, and it’s also going to allow you to select your Notifications pop-up colour.

To be honest, there’s nothing really all that exciting here at all, so it’s definitely the weakest major PS4 firmware update that the console’s received since launch. But to be fair to the hardware it is in a very sturdy position already, and while there are certainly still some things that we want (system-wide supersampling on PS4 Pro, for example), that list is very small right now.

I got it on the 2 for £25 sale but have yet to play it. Now it’s jumped to the top of the list!

Hackers have made significant progress on the PS4 just recently.

Coolest feature in my mind is that they've managed to unlock the PS2 emulator, and it appears to be able to play pretty much any PS2 game, with 4x original resolution, significant improvement to framerates, and quicker load times.

You need to be on fw 4.05 though.

Yeah, hopefully later firmwares get some kind of hack soon, I'm on 4.50.

I imagine they'll keep that kernel hack private (unless Sony patch it), but other exploits may be found/released in the meantime.

*braces self*

So, my PS4 has a 2TB drive in it, and I've just got a PS4 Pro. I'm still keeping the PS4, but I guess the Pro will now be the "main" one, so it makes sense to swap the drives over, so I can fill the Pro with pointless shit I'll never play.

From what I can gather, I need some kind of USB drive to plug into the old PS4 to backup as much as possible, then throw that drive into the Pro, restore the backup and redownload anything else. Similarly, throw the drive from the Pro into the PS4, and restore/download anything that I want on there.

I don't happen to have 2TB of storage lying around (I think the PS4 is about 1.3TB full, it was trying to transfer that onto the Pro that reminded me it had a bigger drive), so if I'm being selective, is there anything I should make sure that I backup, because I won't be able to redownload it (I'd be thinking about something like PT, if I had PT), or anything else I should know?

I would do it the other way: delete the largest games off the Pro’s drive until whatever’s left fits onto the backup drive. Obviously anything you have on disk or bought from PSN you can download again and/or let the PS4 copy it back from the disk. I’d delete the largest first so you have the fewest number of things to re-downloads later.

PT is the only instance I know of of something being removed from PSN.

Also, curse Sony for not making PS4 hard drives interchangeable. (I suspect they are encrypted to the system they are formatted in, as a anti-hacking measure. It still makes this all much harder than it could have been.)

Do you actually really need to transfer any of this? I mean save games yeah, but you can do that with any USB drive; and the games you can just re-download them. Obviously that'll take longer but for the sake of avoiding complexity it's a piece of piss to just queue up some downloads and walk away.

Probably not. I guess working through logically, can I:
Just take the 2TB drive from my old PS4 and stick it in the Pro? Will it boot from it but insist on getting rid of the data, or will it refuse to boot and I'll need to have the system software on a usb stick to hand? I'm assuming that whatever I have to do here will apply to putting the drive from the Pro back in the old PS4?
Once I've got the 2TB drive up and running on the Pro and I'm happily downloading everything back on to it, what will I think "shit, I wish I'd backed that up (if anything, other than saved games)?

Bonus questions for extra credit:
If I back up the save data to usb, am I backing it up for my profile, or the console (it looks like just my profile)?
I (possibly foolishly) carried out the PS4 to PS4 transfer last night (before thinking it made sense to swap the discs over), and the pro is now my primary console. If I mess about with the drives, will it still see the Pro as my primary console, or will my primary console now be some combination of consoles and drives that no longer exists?

I know that on the Xbox One, you can just sign in with your username and password and it will download everything for you including saves, the layout of your home screen and the association with which games you need to download. Doesn't the PS4 have this?

500 GB is tough, especially when you share your PS4 with someone else. Our games-we-often-play-online working set must be 2-300 GB, right? GTA is 65-70 GB alone I think.

I suspect 1 TB is reasonable though. I've never deleted anything since putting in my 2 TB drive a year or so ago, so I probably over-ordered a little bit.

I've never done a disc swap between two consoles so I'll let others address those questions but having transferred stuff from my OG to Pro I can deal with this one. The data you back up isn't tied to a specific console. I backed up loads of save games onto a USB drive and imported them directly on the new console without a problem.

As for what to backup, when doing it from the utility in the PS4's setttings it'll give you a list of all the stuff that can be backed up (so stuff like saved games, screenshots and video captures, etc) so you'll know what's available from there. Assuming you've got a current PS+ sub I'm pretty sure you can choose to upload game saves to the cloud and then download then again on the new console as well.

I've still got 500GB and it's getting to be a right PITA, but I keep thinking that my launch model PS4 might be on its last legs so I'm loathed to do anything about it. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't seem to always need quite so much free space over and above what it's telling you that you need to free up.

Traditionally I'd have precisely one game installed at any given time so even 500GB was overkill. With the advent of PSVR though I keep everything installed for the sake of other people coming round to play with it, but even at that I'm still nowhere near hitting the 1TB limit.

TBH GTA is the only big one, the others are fine. I can usually have 2 or 3 SP games installed and still have space for updates.

Super-sampling mode coming to PS4 Pro with the next firmware update:

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/02 ... ware-5-50/

Assuming I'm reading it right, it means that any game which has a 4K mode available can have that turned on then sampled down to 1080p so you get a visual improvement even on a non-4K set. Although, as noted in the link, a lot of games offer this anyway as part of their Pro feature set so I'm not sure how much difference this will make. Also, if you have this switched on at system level will it over-ride the per game settings you choose i.e. if I choose in a given game to leverage the Pro horsepower to get 60FPS instead of more shinies then how does that interact with the system-level super-sampling choice?

Yes. They work for the user who buys them on any PS4, and they work for anyone else on that user's primary PS4, but they don't work anywhere else. This is one important way in which disks are better if you have multiple PS4s.

The obvious counter example is: MrsDoc and I could co-op Far Cry 5 with a single digital purchase.
