Why are the connection speeds via PSN so fucking slow at the moment? 851kbps, through a fibre connectin that's showing as being 40mbps on the laptop. Is there anything I can do to speed this up? It's even causing fucking lag issues in Battlefront. |

Are you wired or wireless to the router? The wifi is pretty poor in mine. |

Wireless, as is everything else. Who uses wires!?!? The internet seems to say that PlayStations generally have had shit wireless, but this is taking the fucking piss. |

Wireless for gaming? You're basically asking for it. Both my PC and PS4 are connected using Ethernet powerline. The Wii U is wireless but I rarely game online with that. |

Even with every other device switched off it's still getting a tiny fraction of the speed that the other devices are getting. Quote: Does your router have quality of service settings? Dude, please Myp - mayhap, but then I've been using wireless with the 360 for years and it's always been fine...It really shouldn't be achieving download speeds of < 1/40th of every other device. |

Cras wrote: What's giving you that 851kb figure? the PS4 system internet connection thing. Whilst that may not be mega accurate (or so I read) it's shitty slow - I can tell that from the download times for any given update. Whereas the 360 will slurp down a 1gb download in zippy fast time. |

Download times for updates are rarely much to do with your PS4 or its connection. They're incredibly throttled at Sony (or their CDN)'s end. That's why I was asking, you might not be getting anywhere near that bad a connection really. |

Rebooting the router and console often fixes it. |

So, just moved the router right next to the PS4, and it's shot up to 40mbps... Will try plugging it in via ethernet and see if it goes up any more. It was only 8 metres away to start with, though, FFS. Will have to get a wireless repeater thingy so that the other end of the house can get wireless now. Stupid PS4. |

Wi-Fi is somewhat directional you know. Sometimes adjusting aerials can make a big difference. If your router has multiple aerials, put one horizontal and one vertical. If it has no aerials, then make sure that the largest surface is facing the thing that needs the best signal. Routers don't tend to transmit 'backwards' very well. Or... get a wire, you heathen. |

MaliA wrote: Doctor Glyndwr wrote: MaliA wrote: Do electromagnetic transmissions suffer from the inverse square law? Cannot tell if serious. Does a WiFi signal get less strong linearly or exponentially? The inverse square law was explicitly formulated after studying electromagnetic transmission, so, yes, by definition. It's because the fixed amount of energy in the wave is spread evenly [1] across the surface of an expanding sphere, and the surface of that sphere is 4πr^2. That's where the r^2 term comes from. [1] assuming a perfectly uniform transmitter, which definitely exists alongside all the spherical hollow cows, and hey, look over there! |

Doesn't wifi work in "steps" though? So if it's a 100Mb connection, once you're a certain distance away it'll drop down to 75Mb, and so forth. I may be misremembering my CCNA though. |

Although an old GSM engineer's shorthand for signal propagation in cluttered environments (ie. 1-3 GHz passing through the stuff we make cities of) is to just use r^4 instead. It's pretty close to the observed signal dropoff. 5 GHz is actually a bit worse than 2.4 GHz in terms of penetration, but the bandwidth is much less crowded. |

I may be misremembering my CCNA though. You're right. The client and mobile station will negotiate a stable bitrate (chosen from one of a number of tiers, depending on the precise flavour of the wifi spec and the chipsets in use) based on observed network conditions. But that's still rooted in the signal-to-noise ratio, which really comes down to the inverse-square law radiation plus interference; it's just underneath a few layers of abstraction. |

Resogun was one of the first PS+ titles and I doubt they would return to it so i'd just grab it , Doom has been on sale a few times but worth keeping an eye out. My advice for you would be to put together a shortlist and then keep an eye on Savygamer and see when they go on sale (PSN basically always has a sale and just grab it when its cheaper) - not sure of your tastes overall but a few of the top games on Metacritic that i've played and really enjoyed on the PS4 The Last of us (even if you've already played the PS3 version) Inside (the follow on game from the creators of Limbo) Tomb Raider / Rise of the Tomb raider (if you've not played them on any other systems) GTA V Journey Dangerous Golf Bloodbourne Dark Souls III The Witcher 3 Shovel Knight Resogun Rocket League Dead Rising collection (depends on how you feel about these but i'm enjoying returning to the series after a long break) Resident Evil (on PS4 you can pick up 0 / 1 / 4 / 5 / 6 / Revelations 2 so if you like the series at all there is a wide range to play) Wolfenstein (not as good as doom but you can pick it up for a few quid) Until Dawn - go into this knowing nothing and just play through - ignore when people and things die and just play - its a really stand out game. If you like Fighters SFV is 'okay' and there is a good port of SFIV Nidhogg (again if you have not played it to death on other platforms) Super Stardust Ultra Amplitude http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/ ... /metascore |
