In an interview with the Financial Tmes, Sony executive Andrew House has confirmed that a new, more-powerful PlayStation 4, codenamed "Neo," is coming, but says it will not be unveiled at E3. House, who is the president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, says the new system will be sold alongside the existing PS4 for the entirety of this console generation. "It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4," he told the FT, "we will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle."

The new console will output both video and games at up to 4K resolution. House confirmed reports that all games released this generation will continue to support the base PS4 model. As for what the "Neo" will support, House said "all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4." We assume that means all games will run on Neo, but some may not be optimized to offer graphical improvements. Otherwise that's just crazy talk.

The rest of the interview is light on real news. House said the new console will target hardcore gamers and those with a 4K television looking for more high-res content. He noted that the console will be more expensive than the base model, which is a given, but would not give a price, a release date, or even a date when the machine would be formally announced. The one thing he did confirm? It won't be at E3 next week.

Sony will have not one, but two consoles on show at its upcoming PlayStation Meeting event on September 7—and the first appears to have leaked online. A thinner, rounder PlayStation 4 Slim was spotted for sale on classified listings site Gumtree (now removed) via local retailer, which claimed it was due for release in three weeks. Twitter user shortman82 has since purchased the unit, unboxed it, and slapped a load of photos online.

Update: Gaming site Eurogamer has since paid a visit to the person who bought the unreleased console from the Gumtree listing and filmed a quick video showing the system working and booting into the PlayStation OS. It's extremely likely that this PS4 slim system is indeed the real deal.

The purported PS4 Slim looks considerably thinner than the original PS4, which was already a small console. The same cleaved-parallelepiped aesthetic remains, but the corners have been rounded off, while the glossy plastic section that covered the hard drive on the original PS4 has been removed entirely. While that's good for fans of fingerprint-free gadgets, it does raise questions as to whether the hard drive will be replaceable in the PS4 Slim, particularly as the listed model (CUH-2016A) only sports 500GB of storage.

Download times for updates are rarely much to do with your PS4 or its connection. They're incredibly throttled at Sony (or their CDN)'s end. That's why I was asking, you might not be getting anywhere near that bad a connection really.

Wireless for gaming? You're basically asking for it. Both my PC and PS4 are connected using Ethernet powerline.

Do electromagnetic transmissions suffer from the inverse square law?

Wi-Fi is somewhat directional you know. Sometimes adjusting aerials can make a big difference. If your router has multiple aerials, put one horizontal and one vertical. If it has no aerials, then make sure that the largest surface is facing the thing that needs the best signal. Routers don't tend to transmit 'backwards' very well.

Or... get a wire, you heathen.
