Then clearly, you should post more.

I didn't take it like that at all. I was just trying to make a joke by making a post that had little content. I was posting more, see?

This is why I don't post more.

I think Sony are doing whatever makes the most business sense which is where Microsoft miscalculated so badly. Right now that's torpedoing the competition. I expect that in a few years time the whole thing will more closely resemble Microsoft's vision than all this hippie bullshit Sony are spouting. Digital downloads will have become the norm and questions about what you can do with disks will be an irrelevance. Maybe.

I think there's more to it than that though, it's like companies start to believe their own hype and think they can do anything.

You can go as far back as the Atari 2600 whereby Atari manufactured so many E.T. cartridges they ended up burying a load of them in landfill, so convinced were they that the game would sell despite it being utter rubbish.

Or Sega who after the success of the Master System and Megadrive seemed to think they could get away with the Mega-CD and 32X, and were still so fucking arrogant at the launch of the Saturn they were visibly snooty about helping out retailers with signage and demo machines and suchlike, whereas Sony couldn't be too keen in that regard.

After Sony owned the world with the PS1 and PS2, come the launch of the PS3 that Kutarugi guy or whatever he's called basically had the attitude of 'You will all buy this because it's got the Sony badge on it and it's called a Playstation', except it turns out Microsoft had done incredible work with the 360 and caught Sony on the hop, especially with the quality of the online elements, friends, gamerscore, achievements and so on.

As daft as it sounds it's as if a company needs to get knocked down a peg or two to realise that they do have to make an effort to make a good product, because people do wise up and will go for the best thing.

As Microsoft are about to find out with the XBoner versus the PS4......

As long as it doesn't take five minutes to load everything, isn't plastered with loud ads, and doesn't come with an unwanted, mandatory £100 peripheral, it's fine by me.

I've never understood the complaints about the home screens really, in PS3 or XBox. The home screen is just the thing that flashes up and I ignore, before I play a game...

This is all I'm worried about as everything looks quite picture/video heavy. Those with poorly little Internet connections might be waiting a while. I won't; I've got Virgin Super-Wires drilled into my living room and poked down my flower beds.

which is pretty much how I thought until it started taking an age for the Xbox to even display the home screen due to loading of ads and the like.

The answer to Microsoft's 'claimed' indie publishing

http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/24/455384 ... ystation-4

Quote:
So how much does it cost to develop for PlayStation 4?
By Colin Campbell on Jul 24, 2013 at 6:15p @ColinCampbellx

Microsoft has swung open the gates to indie developers by making the Xbox One a development kit in its own right. But how much does it cost to start creating indie games for Sony's rival PlayStation 4?

Polygon spoke to various development sources who say that the PlayStation 4 dev kit costs about $2,500, which is $2,000 more than an Xbox One. Indie Xbox One developers will also pay a fee to Microsoft, which a source said is a few hundred dollars. Microsoft declined to talk publicly about the fee.

Although this $2,500 price is being cited in development circles, the game-makers we spoke to all said that Sony had lent them dev kits for a limited period of one year, for free. As of right now, there are no dev kits being sold. Sony is sending whatever it has available to favored developers. "All the indies I know got them for free," said one developer. "Sony has been amazing about kits and development thus far."

Another developer said that Sony is focused on loaners, rather than collecting fees. "They are handing them out like candy," he said.

"Self-publishing has been available on PlayStation platforms for over five years, so it's nothing new," said a spokesperson for Sony. "The process of devs bringing their games to market has continued to evolve, and PlayStation has led the charge in adapting and embracing new publishing rules to allow for more creative freedom for developers."

The spokesperson pointed toward Sony's loaner dev kit program, as well as other support mechanisms. "With self-publishing, we keep things really flexible for developers and give them lots of options, including funding through the Pub Fund, which is back-end funding paid upon completion of the game, we waive patch fees for indies and all digital titles and we embrace new business models like F2P, episodic and subscriptions. We've had more than 500 games self-published on PSN."

In the previous generation, PS3 dev kits cost between $1,000 and $10,000. Generally, there are different levels of dev kits, ranging in debug functionality and pricing. The $2,500 price point seems to be a popular option among most developers.

Sony said it would not be changing its self-publishing processes, which are detailed on a website dedicated to indies. Many developers are happy to work in emulation on PCs. A dev kit is not necessary until later in a project's life, and few indies are aiming to release their games at the PS4's launch.

"By and large, indie development has become extremely accessible, especially on our platform," said the spokesperson. "We offer a lot of freedom and flexibility and we've built our in-PS Store promotions around indie titles and their launch dates. Also, we provide indies with additional support like putting them on stage at E3, hosting indie-focused events like our Indie Arcade at GDC, etc. Most importantly, our Developer Relations team has really developed relationships with the devs. They talk daily, offer advice and really advocate for them and their particular needs."

Which is 2 weeks later than the US so we'll see what the feedback is from them

The other thing that was announced at Gamescom was that they have over 1 million pre-orders for PS4 , I'm assuming Microsoft are not close to that number otherwise they would have said something similar ?

I'm still undecided, I've had pre-orders in for both since possible and an the Xbox is slowly winning me round. If they had announced crackdown 3 instead of more fable rubbish yesterday I'd have probably been swayed.

The price difference isn't too different in my case, Xbox with FIFA 14 and PS4 with FIFA 14 there is only 35 quid difference.

So that's 35 quid for Kinect, which I don't think has been demonstrated in a next gen game at all, for making everyone get one in a bundle you'd think they'd try away all the people saying it's shite.

I'm quite relieved it's a bit later here. It's my 40th birthday this year so we've booked a trip to Rome and Paris from the 16th for a week and it would have been annoying to have it land just before I set off.

I've just taken a glance at both launch line ups for the PS4 and Xbone and it seems to me that it's between whether you like Dead Rising or Killzone better. The rest is are multiformat (The two big hitters, CoD and BF4, out on both) or a much of a muchness.

Personally, I'd take Dead Rising over Killzone any day so it's a launch win for Xbone. Not that I'll be buying an Xbone, mind. I'm a older and have more money in my pockets than the start of the last gen so I'm going for a Day One splurge. I might even see if there's a midnight opening thingy that kids like as I've never been to one and, well, why not, you won't get another Next Gen for a while.

What's the chances of both consoles selling out at Christmas? I might buy both, decide which one I want to keep then sell the other for a small profit.

Chances are small, I'd say. They're not cheap. Maybe the PS4, but I doubt the Xbone will sell out.

Playing a wee bit of Battlefield before I go to work and it reminds us again of annoying features of the ps3. Patches, updates, only one player signed into console at a time, cant view friends of my friends...I'm glad the ps4 is released in America first so other people spend the money and check it out.

The patches/updates is definitely fixed. Games are (should you chose them to be) silently kept up to date in the background. Specifics on how this will work aren't unclear, but it shouldn't be too hard a problem to solve when your OS/hardware is designed around it from the start.

I'm assuming all of this will be fixed, but the only having one person signed in at a time is a relatively small issue but really really irritating so it had better be sorted.

There is a lot wrong with the PS3. I really do hope they've fixed these issues before the PS4 comes out.

The PS3 launch was a fucking mess. It was such a shambles that I didn't have an interest in it as a games console until about two years ago.

Now I've got one and they seem to have ironed a lot of the problems out that they had initially. It was jarring at first as a lot of things are different, but now I've got used to it I prefer it.

It really is down to personal preference though. If having more than one user signed in at a time, party chat and dedicated online servers is a deal breaker for sdg, then I can see why she is gravitating towards the Xbone 180 Spycam of Doom.

It would be a shame though, as I miss shooting her in the face. :hat:

There was an interview with one of the lead designers/engineers of the PS3 in Eurogamer a while back wherein he admitted that it was obvious there were serious issues with the implementation of the PS3 pretty much right from the start so internally they've obviously known how shit certain aspects of it from early on. Given that plus the lessons they've learned in making changes I'm optimistic the PS4 will be a much better product than the PS3 in most ways.

I'm hopeful that these things get resolved and I would be really surprised if they weren't but I have to admit, only being able to have one person signed in at a time would really make me consider the Xbox One.

I just remembered that the PS3 already does this, but only if the game supports it. That's how Ange and I managed to play.

That's so weird, why isn't it just a feature? Does that mean that presumably Sony will insist on that for all games for PS4? We played FIFA recently and couldn't both sign in!

It's because online play as a feature was a half-baked afterthought from Sony. Obviously they've seen how popular it's become on the 360 and I fully expect it to be a much fuller experience this time around.

Remember that it was Sony's first stab at a proper online console. The original Xbox was Microsoft's, and that had varying degrees of success and knew what worked and what didn't by the time the 360 rolled around.

Probably the same reason party chat isn't a feature: Sony didn't reserve enough of the PS3's RAM when the console launched to support development to the core OS down the road. You can't just take RAM back from games without breaking older games that expect to have a certain amount of it. So Sony was forever hobbled to that decision. Some games devs bake it into the game, instead, as myp says.

Nope. It was a fuck up, not a policy. Mark Cerny, the PS4's lead architect, has been very open and honest about the myriad ways in which he thinks the PS3 was broken that the PS4 fixes.

Quite excited about this sort of thing. I wonder how it'll work out, though? I imagine that the headset will be pretty spendy and so actually getting games produced which can use it might be an issue as I assume that it won't be the case that the machine has enough power to just render out any old game twice. Or is it easier than that somehow?

Is there somewhere I could look, or someone I could ask (on twitter or whatever) to find out if the ps4 will support things like two profiles signed in at once? I'd hate to preorder on then find something like that was missing.
Confirmed now (it switches to English down the page) that up to four profiles can be signed in at once.

Good question one that I had not thought about. I just assumed it would let you login with multiple profiles. Good to have it confirmed

Details on how the upgrade program will work for the select games where you can get the PS4 version for cheap if you buy the PS3 version.

Retail copies of the PS3 games come with a serial code and you need to put the PS3 disc in the PS4 to play the downloadable version on PS4.

So no buying a PS3 copy and trading it in, just to get the PS4 version.
