Is that actually live for you? Mine's still saying they cost money.

Just refreshed browser and now they're free! Looking forward to playing pvz looks like fun.

I bought it when it was on sale for £13 and I've barely touched it. Oh well!

I only have the PS1 version, to be honest.

Just travelled 200km away from home, and then used my Vita to turn on my PS4 and play geometry wars 3 and far cry 4, without any (noticeable) lag and in perfect quality. Unbelievable how well it works.

That's the bloody future right there, and pulls the rug out under the WiiU to a large extent.

The only slight flaws are:
1) I've got to ring the wife if I want the disks swapped (and I'm not sure she knows how to eject, due to those touch sensors)
2) the back screen touch pads do not work well as a replacement for L1/R1 (but the front screen does a much better job).

I don't think anybody cares about the second screen on the Wii-U these days. It's all about the software. Also that's a pretty high cost of entry compared to an all in one Wii-U.

Don't get me wrong trousers. The WiiU in genuinely the best next gen console. By a huge margin.

By what metric? "Plays Nintendo games" I'll grant you, but "likelihood of enjoying a long and fruitful life of third party dev support" doesn't favour Nintendo at all. The Wii-U is going to be starved of games even more than the Wii was, I reckon.

It's genuinely the best console because it has the best library of games right now. If anyone was asking me which console to get someone for Christmas this year, I'd say a Wii U.

Intersting. So you don't buy things based at all on how useful they will be in the future then? You strictly only consider how useful they are right now?

Its also the 'exclusive' ones for each console which also makes the Wii-U look good

If i was going to buy another 'new' console right now i'd take the Wii-U over the Xbox one simply because anything big 3rd party that comes out will make it to the PS4 but if i want to play Smash / Mario Kart / Bayonetta 2 then the only place to play them is the Wii-U (whereas the Xbox one its just Sunset Overdrive and Halo)

But would you choose a Wii-U to be the only one of the three you own?

I'm happy to concede that done large proportion of the software library on PS4 and X1 is roughly equivalent, so there's a weak case for owning both. And the Wii-U has enough exclusives to maybe make it the logical number 2 choice behind one of {PS4, X1}, depending how you feel about Nintendo games. But describing the Wii-U as the single most desirable is controversial, to my mind.

I've got a PS4 for the future. I've got a Wii U for right now. Want to have fun playing games this Christmas? Put a Wii U under the tree.

If I could only choose one current-gen console right now to have, it would be the Wii U. The exclusives on the PS4/XBO are weak, and mostly everything else is available last-gen, or PC/Mac. This will change over the next 12-18 months.

No , and I agree its the logical 'second' choice - the only other caveat would be if you were happy with PC gaming which would also give you most of the big games (I play plenty of stuff on the PC but my first choice would generally be a console)

I'm aware that this could be seen as a failing on my part but I'm pretty sure I'm not unique. The only titles I can think of that I'd really want to play on there are the new Mario (which I would get bored of and never finish) and the new Zelda next year (which I would get bored of and never finish).

New Zelda looks good but isnt out yet and 'New' Mario is actually last years game :-)

The big Wii-U titles for 2014 were

Smash Bros
Mario Kart
Bayonetta 2

I understand that Myp is also pointing out that if you go for stuff since launch you can add Zombie U , Mario Bros , Nintendoland , and a number of other good games to the list and as those are now 1 or 2 years old you'll get them cheap so you are almost at the stage where its worth picking one up for the library that is available

Yep, I'd enjoy some of the first party games off that list, and do definitely want a WiiU at some point (as soon as I see a decent bundle).
The trouble is when I look at what I've played over the last year since the PS4 came out almost none are available on the WiiU so I wouldn't want that as my only console

I doubt I'd buy any more than 3 games for Christmas anyway. I'd mop up the rest later in the year.

One is too many. Also I was going to say 'none of the games released on the Wii U have been broken' but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I didn't buy a Wii and barely played the one Craster gave to me, so I'm catching up on the good stuff from last gen too (Super Mario Galaxy at the moment).

Totally this. Nintendo largely did themselves out of ever getting any more of my money with that piece of shit. Up until that point all they had to do was release a new Zelda game with every generation and I'd slightly grudgingly buy their console so they had to go pretty far out of their way to fuck it up. Granted the WiiU and it's games are much less likely to rely on terrible motion controls, and they don't look to be quite so brain searingly fucking ugly, but still; I'll have enough to play with all the other platforms without having to give Nintendo more money.

Seems pretty simple to me. You need any one box for playing games, plus a Wii U.

Gaming PC & Wii U.
PS4 & Wii U.
Xbox One & Wii U.
Or even for a while, PS3/Xbox 360 & Wii U.

There is barely any advantage to owning two of a Gaming PC/PS4/Xbox One, they all have roughly the same library, give or take a handful of games. Wii U is the only console where all it's best games are only available on the Wii U, but I'd not want to give up on all the other games which are available on the somewhat homogeneous other platforms.

Obviously some people are ambivalent towards Nintendo games, and some people particularly dislike Nintendo games, but for anyone else, the Wii U is pretty essential at this point. It's obviously not been hugely successful, but it's got at least 3 years of Nintendo (who are on top form right now) software on the way, and it's already got a killer library.

Gun to my head, I'd say PC gaming offers the most at this moment in time, and I'd say a Wii U is a better use of your money than a PS4 right now. Especially with some of the sub £150 Wii U deals that have been cropping up. Obviously it is all subjective though, some people like Forza/Fable/Gears of War/Halo.

Edit: No other console has two exclusive Platinum Games.

There's plenty of non-AAA stuff that's only available on the PC. Or, at best, comes out on the PS4 a good chunk of time later.

I can't think of a single Platinum Games game (or under their previous name(s)) that sucked. There's one that weren't as good as the others but none have sucked.

I wonder how many games there are that are on PS4 and XBOne but not WiiU. Not exclusives, but important when deciding what to buy.

Not scientific but just going through what i can see on there

Games that you can play on a Wii-U in that list : 3
Games that you can play on a PS4 in that list : 14
Games that you can play on a Xbox One in that list : 13
Games that you can play on a PC in that list : 18
Games that you can play on a 360 or a PS3 in that list : 10

See, and that's why platform exclusives are a bit of a nonentity of a metric.

There aren't any Xbox One exclusives on the list if we are being pedantic, but I don't think counting games on a list is a particularly meaningful metric of anything.

But comparing platform exclusives is obviously meaningful, even though it is also subjective.

When I'm looking to buy a console, the list of games that I can't play is hugely important. And platform exclusives doesn't tell me that, mainly because of the vast number of games that are available for PS4/XBOne but not WiiU. None of them might be platform exclusives, but that doesn't help me if I can't play them on my WiiU.

Many people own more than one platform on which to play games.

Indeed. Which explains why how import a metric of "the games that buying this box lets me play" is subjective.

How is that subjective? That is an absolute number! There may be games you do and do not like, but the simple fact is, if console y has 3 games for it and console z has 300 games for it, I am far more likely to find games that I want to play on console z.
