The line "looks set to beat profits achieved by the internationally legendary PS2" in this article is a bit too vague to think about, but the fact that the PS4 is already turning a profit is a hell of a result for Sony given the length of time it took the PS3 to recoup it's cost. The exact quote of "already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis" is weirdly worded mind you so I don't know if there's some shenanigans going on or if that's just how these things are called out at a corporate level.

I wonder how close MS are to making a profit on the Xbone?

I expect that means that the PS4 itself costs less to make than they sell it for.

Given AEs assertion (and I'm not questioning that) that the new consoles are made of two year old generic off the shelf parts, would seem plausible that os development costs aside the profit point for each is a low hurdle.

It's certainly made up of fairly standard parts, but I still think you'd struggle to build an equivalent PC for £300 or so.

So, a few days ago, being rather upset, I also got rather uninntentionally drunk.
I didn't think overly much of this until I get home yesterday and find a parcel waiting for me., containing a ps4. Turns out I buy things while drunk and forget about it.

It also turns of that while drunk and buying a games machine, I buy no games to go with it...

Silly drunk me. At least I had a couple though ps+. And more today.

--

But yeah. First impressions: Bugger me, the pads really nice. Not at all hand breaking like the dualshock 3, and nicer (at least from what I've used of it) than the 360 one). Touch pad is a bit rubbish though

Of the games I've played so far, I'd believe you if you told me they were ps3 games (but with a nicer pad)
Those games in full:
Resogun - So far leaving me a little cold. But only played it yesterday when I was _really_ tired
Stick it to the man. Kinda reminds of a little of psychonauts for some reason But nowhere near as funny.
Child of light - Now this I like. Rather pretty too.
Transistor - Probably the reason I bought it. Maybe. So far it's confused me a bit. Certainly not as easy to pick up as Bastion, although I remember it took a little while for that to click too.

I also have Thi4f, and two FTP games which I have yet to play.

Resogun is fantastic. Definitely give that one another go when you're in the mood. Essentially it's to Defender what Super Stardust on the PS3 was to Asteroids.

I think the answer is 'if you want to'

Right now there is no single 'you must buy a PS4 to play this game' , however there will be titles like that in the future (and I expect to see a number of them at E3 in a few weeks time).

There *is* a large number of 'good' games which are available on the PS4 but a lot of them are also available on the PC so if you have a capable PC then that might be a better option just now

Also: pretty much every other platform under the sun. The number of good games that are genuinely only available on the PS4/PC is still very small surely?

So far my impressions are: Nice system. Shame it crashes so much, hope they fix it soon.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right at all. Mine hasn't crashed once either since I got in in November except for when I was playing Battlefield 4 but in that case I'm pretty sure it was the fault of the game since so many other people were reporting the same thing. Think you have a broken one.

Nah, it appears that certain games expose problems in the firmware that others don't. Something to do with the save function. (Which also means that if you do hit the problem, there's a fair chance of your save being corrupted, something I have so far avoided, thankfully)

Apparently you need to delete the conflicting saves from the cloud and that should fix it.

Computers are like cars though: the more technology you cram in the greater the chance that they're more prone to fiddly errors.

And the size of your PC box is commensurate with the size of your penis length.

I thought it was also related to the number of LEDS ?

Bamba wrote:

Transistor was the one in my head when I typed that and I also know a number of the 'small' games that are out on the PS4 over the last few months were PC / PS4 (and possibly vita as well).

So for example

Resogun (PS4 only)
Transistor (PS4 / PC)
Dont Starve (PS4 / PC)
Infamous (PS4)
Towerfall (PS4 / PC)
Final Fantasy XIV (PS4 / PC and PS3)
Steamworld Dig (PS4 / PC and Vita)
Outlast (PS4 / PC)
Stick it to the man (PS4 / PC)

As for crashes - I've had dashboard crashes for COD Ghosts / BF4 in the past (none recently) - but nothing else - and those were 'back to dashboard' i've never had a crash that required me to power cycle the machine itself (I've had a number of those in the past on the 360)

I had one on transistor which froze for ages and then took down the system, numerous ones on Child of Light which around the save operation but take me to an error dialog rather than require anything more.

Those are pretty much the only two games I've put extended time into though.

Stick it to the Man came out on the PS3 first, and Final Fantasy XIV is besides the point if it's also out on the PS3, but yeah; that's a slightly bigger list than I expected. Nothing there worth buying a whole new console for mind.

I have also not had any crashing problems or error messages or anything on my PS4. Might possibly be worth keeping an eye on and maybe look at getting the machine swapped over.

Trufax: On my launch day original Xbox, sometimes 10 or so random pixels would appear odd colours in all games when playing it with an RGB SCART cable (as if playing on an LCD screen with some stuck pixels). It wasn't a show stopping problem by any means and I just put it down to being a quirk of the machine. I actually just assumed it's what Xboxes did when hooked up via RGB SCART. Then a friend came over one day, immediately pointed it out to me and assured me his console did nothing of the sort. I took it back to the shop, they agreed they'd never seen the problem before and swapped it over for me. And, lo and behold, the replacement machine was perfect and never did that weird pixel thing once. I'd put up with that bizarre fault for more than six months.

The amount of time it takes to finish Stick It To The Man means your hands wouldn't be crippled even if you played it using a tic-tac glued to a cactus.

That there's a problem with saving on that particular game isn't really in doubt.

The transistor one also seems to be not exactly uncommon.

I've been trying to play mine more recently, I'm so, so shit at having a console... There's always something that needs doing instead. Like laundry or digging the garden

Anyway, I've been playing a couple of demo's and the free games. Not really played as much Lego Marvel Superheros as I should, and I've been on the PS3 playing The Last of Us.

I don't think the games I have really justify having a next gen console over the 360/PS3 but we'll see what the rest of the year brings, I'm still really looking forward to Destiny. And whatever they call the new Unchartered game, which is likely at least a year away anyway.

Unless all your BF4 and CoD playing buddies have moved to one of the new systems, I wouldn't say they're exactly a must have at the moment but that's just imo.

Some chat here about PS4 exclusive Everybody's Gone to Rapture which is basically Dear Esther 2. No doubt it won't be quite the rich experience they're trying for but will be excellent nonetheless if you like 'experience games'. If nothing else it confirms the PS4 as the place to go this gen if you want a bit of variety in your games.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014- ... war-review

It does look beautiful, doesn't it? I'm struggling a bit from all the reviews to understand what type of game it actually is, but it's so pretty I've added it to The List anyway. The fact it's available on pretty much every platform under the sun just makes it yet another thing I'll pick up on the ps4 after God of War 4 is done.

The next gen launch has really been a shadow of what we were sold, but having waited about a year, it offers well enough a compelling list of shit to buy.
