Wireless for gaming? You're basically asking for it. Both my PC and PS4 are connected using Ethernet powerline.

There's nothing magical about powerline just because it happens to be hacked on top of an existing wire. There are many circumstances under which it can be worse than WiFi.

It's always been much faster in my experience.

The inverse square law was explicitly formulated after studying electromagnetic transmission, so, yes, by definition. It's because the fixed amount of energy in the wave is spread evenly [1] across the surface of an expanding sphere, and the surface of that sphere is 4πr^2. That's where the r^2 term comes from.

[1] assuming a perfectly uniform transmitter, which definitely exists alongside all the spherical hollow cows, and hey, look over there!

Doesn't wifi work in "steps" though? So if it's a 100Mb connection, once you're a certain distance away it'll drop down to 75Mb, and so forth. I may be misremembering my CCNA though.

Although an old GSM engineer's shorthand for signal propagation in cluttered environments (ie. 1-3 GHz passing through the stuff we make cities of) is to just use r^4 instead. It's pretty close to the observed signal dropoff.

5 GHz is actually a bit worse than 2.4 GHz in terms of penetration, but the bandwidth is much less crowded.

You're right. The client and mobile station will negotiate a stable bitrate (chosen from one of a number of tiers, depending on the precise flavour of the wifi spec and the chipsets in use) based on observed network conditions. But that's still rooted in the signal-to-noise ratio, which really comes down to the inverse-square law radiation plus interference; it's just underneath a few layers of abstraction.

Doom, Doom doom doom, Doom doom doom, Doom doom doom doom doom doom.
Resogun would suit your 2d shooter skills for sure

Having said that wait for both to be on offer with PS+ I reckon.

Resogun was one of the first PS+ titles and I doubt they would return to it so i'd just grab it , Doom has been on sale a few times but worth keeping an eye out.

My advice for you would be to put together a shortlist and then keep an eye on Savygamer and see when they go on sale (PSN basically always has a sale and just grab it when its cheaper) - not sure of your tastes overall but a few of the top games on Metacritic that i've played and really enjoyed on the PS4

The Last of us (even if you've already played the PS3 version)
Inside (the follow on game from the creators of Limbo)
Tomb Raider / Rise of the Tomb raider (if you've not played them on any other systems)
GTA V
Journey
Dangerous Golf
Bloodbourne
Dark Souls III
The Witcher 3
Shovel Knight
Resogun
Rocket League
Dead Rising collection (depends on how you feel about these but i'm enjoying returning to the series after a long break)
Resident Evil (on PS4 you can pick up 0 / 1 / 4 / 5 / 6 / Revelations 2 so if you like the series at all there is a wide range to play)
Wolfenstein (not as good as doom but you can pick it up for a few quid)
Until Dawn - go into this knowing nothing and just play through - ignore when people and things die and just play - its a really stand out game.
If you like Fighters SFV is 'okay' and there is a good port of SFIV
Nidhogg (again if you have not played it to death on other platforms)
Super Stardust Ultra
Amplitude

Doom. Uncharted 4. Fallout 4. Witcher 3. Ratchet & Clank. GTA V, if you didn't play it already or you want to play online with us.

Most of those you're very welcome to borrow from me, too. I still have them and are done with them.

I don't suppose Manhunt will go much lower anytime soon, so I'll have to yoink that. Incidentally, I got a real hankering for this after doing a max difficulty run-through of The Last of Us.

It's not aged well, sadly. I tried playing it recently and the control scheme was annoying.

The bit with the skyscraper, blind zombie and quick zombies near the beginning was too tricky so I gave up as I wasn't enjoying it.

I'm thinking of selling the old PS4 to upgrade to the Pro. Would there be any interest to anyone in here to buy my 500Gb PS4 for £250 if I threw in a load of games?

I can't remember which one we were doing last. I think we did the Dark Below and were mid-way through the House of Wolves. We've got a couple of characters. I think one's around level 32 and another is level 18 or something. Would need to boot it up and check.

Would rather Ian kept it though so we could carry on with the dream team. ;)

Hmm, so that's a bit confusing. Have you finished the main campaign, then? I think I am around level 14, but doing level 12 missions and in the middle of The Dark Below, IIRC.

Yeah we've finished the main campaign. Dave and I started new characters and started again so Ian wasn't totally underpowered.
