I have a PC with Windows 8.

I have taken photos from my old PC and moved them to my new one. I have various folder structures in which is view them, sort them, etc.

Apart from I can't.

Because they have actually removed the picture viewer from Windows. In its place you can view one picture in the normal way by double clicking, but you cannot edit it in any way, and you cannot move to another picture. You have to close that pic, move away from the app folder, re-open Windows Explorer, navigate to another pic, and open it. All instead of pressing one key.

Apparently this can be overcome to some extent by using the Photos app. From what I gather you need to add pics individually to this app, or in bulk, and then they are all accessible and you can finally view them.

But then they're ALL there. Your family pics, your holiday snaps, any pornography you own settling in nicely with the rest.

How can they have removed that? I thought I was doing something dumb, but Google searches appear to have confirmed it! They have removed the ability to browse through your own photos on your own computer!

Someone please tell me there's a way to fix this simply, or I will have to uninstall the whole thing, and that is a massive pain in the arse.

It is easily doable, in that I swt it up to work in about 20 seconds.

I'll let you know when I gwt home if noone else.has.sorted you out.

Ok, I'll admit to a minor belm here: The computer I was thinking about when I wrote this was actually the only one I have at home which still runs 7. (Although that may indicate how different using the two is in practice)

But I still wasn't talking rubbish. On windows 8, you can just set the default photo viewing program to the classic photo viewer by right clicking on a file, choose open with, choose default program, and select Windows Photo Viewer. (You may want to sort this out for other file types too, which is easily done in bulk through control panel->Programs->Default programs->Set Associations)

It's not as well featured as the live photo viewer in Win7 (although still features basic navigation, rotation and the ability to launch an editor, no cross folder stuff though), but that's still available, just grab Windows Essentials 2012 from t'internet. Or find another tool which works easily as well. Any of those options is less hassle than a reinstall.

Although I guess thinking about it. you're probably only thinking of the viewer that come with windows 8 anyway. This thing? (As demonstrated showing a picture of me and Dimrill having fun on the ceiling)

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Cheers Dave; that works.

Why the fuck they couldn't make that a standard thing to open pictures with I will never know.

Anyway, now I can go back to looking at awful pictures of TFF from ten years ago and laughing.

Thread Necromancy engaged...

So I've got myself a new laptop and it comes with the spawn of the devil that is Windows 8 (quickly updated to the slightly less evil BUT still very evil 8.1).

Does anyone use a shell replacement? I honestly despise the interface, even the desktop view...any recommendations on interface improvements? (I'll even pay for the sodding thing to get something that resembles Win 7)

If you even despise the lovely clean desktop, best thing you can do is use the downgrade clause and pit windows 7 on.

Specific OEM agreements may differ but usually the windows 8 licence allows you to install windows 7 instead.

our recent batch of dells came with windows 8 licences and media but windows 7 preinstalled.

It's obviously a ploy to.boost win8 sales, because technically that's what was sold.

I installed this for my mum and it's been pretty solid. It's free and can be skinned as you like.

Also: Kovacs incoming in 10,9,...

It would seem to be me as I'm the only person to have posted after him, but the content of my post is so lacking in either snark or indeed anything aimed at him at all that I can only assume the actual answer is: the voices in bik's head.

Kovacs, bless him, comes across a bit fanboy at times. For you to specifically predict his entrance into an anti-Windows8 thread is snark (snark, dammit, stupid.phone) and to try to jokingly misdirect is trolling.

The way you wrote your post it's almost impossible to take anything from it other than an accusation that I was being snarky at you. Now you've explained what you were getting at I can sort of see how what you wrote could mean that, but it's very far from obvious. So I wasn't jokingly misdirecting, I genuinely had no idea what you were taking about. And even if I was, that really isnt what the word 'trolling' means.

Also I joke about Kovacs popping up because he spent quite a lot of time doing exactly that specifically to tell me I was wrong every single time I said anything about Windows 8. So I reserve the right to make that joke not about him being a fanboy (I don't actually think he is, that's your interpretation) but just about him being unable to resist responding to me.

Also, fuck sake man, look at the volume of stuff I've had to type out just to respond to this nonsense. In future could you just let Kovacs defend his own honour and save us both the time?

They are good for keeping in heat/providing security whilst still allowing light in.

When it works, the OS is an entirely adequate if uninspiring way of interacting with a computer; when it doesn't work, it is quite maddening.
