A friend was rummaging through my DVD collection and pulled out a disc in a plain wrapper that was hidden behind some others.

'What's this?' she asked.

A bit embarrassed, I meekly admitted the truth.

'Windows Vista'

Windows 9 is (probably) getting the proper start menu back, and the charms bullshit is reducing.

Hardly a surprise, really.

Windows 8, so good they're making Windows 9 like Windows 7.

There's a lot of guess work in that article isn't there? Windows 8.1 is fine and it's very easy to get it to work exactly like Windows 7 if you're that way inclined.

I quite like the way windows 8/8.1 did things, saying that I never really used the metro screen for anything other than for searching.

Windows 11 obviously... because it'll be louder than 10.

Interesting, I was expecting "Windows 9" but 10 is a surprise

Shows they need to put more distance between this and Windows 8 than they needed to for Vista\Windows 7

So why not use an extra number!

For the last 15 years I've run MS beta OS for months before the final release, I still only have Windows 8 on a surface pro, the rest of my home devices are Windows 7. Try as I might I just don't like it, and I do make an effort, every 2 or 3 months I chastise myself for not using the latest OS whilst working in IT, so stick it on a laptop only to do fuck all with it

They changed from names to numbers, and not even the previous/server year-based numbers, to get away from vista. That's a bigger distancing effort than 'skip a number' to me.

It's just the trend at the moment. Look at Mario Kart 7/8 also. They'll go back to names in a few years time.

It's a painfully unfunny parody article from 1st April last year.

Ever since I got my first Surface Pro on release day (and now, Pro 3) I've always said that I love Windows 8 with the caveat that I know full well that I'm using hardware designed specifically for it.

Today I'm working from home and have been doing a lot of spreadsheet manipulation. As such I have used an old USB mouse that is knocking around the house, and plugged into the Surface running Windows 8.1. I then tried using mouse and no touch on the restored (but not yet updated to 8.1) Surface for comparison purposes. On neither have I used touch at all since this experiment began..

In conclusion, I have no fucking idea what people moaning about Windows 8 being unusable without a touch screen/with a mouse have been whining about for the past 2 years.

You can get full kvm docks that'll take a keyboard and mouse and throw the display up on a screen if you really wanted to.

You can also plug an Xbox 360 pad in and Android will recognise it and let you use the thumbstick and buttons to navigate around.

Anyone who's ever actually said it's literally unusable is wrong because of course that's not true. The actual complaint is that the Windows 8 home screen is much harder to use with a mouse/keyboard and certainly isn't an improvement on the Win7 Start Menu therefore is a UI downgrade for anyone without a touchscreen.

I disagree. I think Windows 8.1 isn't hard to use with a mouse and keyboard at all. Also the start menu, whilst at first was something different, is actually much easier to use than the Windows 7 version. I find that the more popular programmes and apps are all exactly where I need them and it looks lovely.

Well Windows 9 will give those of us who think it's shite the option to not have to deal with it and then we can all just stop talking about it over and over again. So that'll be nice.

Which is a tacit admission it didn't work for a large portion of their customer base. So people saying it isn't a problem are just plainly wrong.
