I thought he was at his best as Alan B'stard, scarily convincing. He was also fun as Greg Davies's dad in Man Down last year. Big loss to comedy. |

Sorry to hear about Rik Mayall. And of all the stuff he's done, I think Bottom made me laugh the most. The Chess episode particularly. "Which one am I again?" "Those ones there! The ones on your side of the board! THE ONES NEXT TO YOU!" Great memories watching that when I was a kid.

I rewatched Bottom last year on Netflix (I've had the DVDs for years but never got around to watching them because, y'know, putting discs in drives is way out of fashion), and whilst it's somewhat hit and miss at its funniest it really is uproariously and preposterously funny, proper tears of laughter stuff. Nothing particularly revelatory in the obituaries this morning although several hints of an insecurity and darkness around his person, which is often the case with comedians of course. I think it's pretty obvious the quad-bike crash took its toll on his long-term health, and more recently he'd been very upset when Edmondson walked away from the Bottom revival they'd been working on. (Edmondson is a reasonably regular guest on the Radcliffe & Maconie show on Radio 6, and on his last appearance they asked him about Mayall and the Bottom revival and it was clear there was some pain there and that they'd had a falling out over it.) A sad loss but at least he leaves a body of very impressive comedy behind him. |

There's a comment on the Guardian appreciation column that neatly sums the guy up. I've never seen eyes smile so much as Robin Williams' while at the same time looking on the verge of tears. I don't normally bother too much when a famous celebrity type dies but Robin Williams being dead at 63 feels plain wrong. Rik Mayall and Bob Hoskins as well this year, bad fucking run. |

Yeah I saw Dead Poets Society when I was 15, had quite an impact. For sure he was in a raft of dodgy films over the years which I guess he took to keep busy and for the cash, but there are so many stellar films in his filmography that he can be forgiven those. Electrifying stand-up act as well. Always came over as a really decent bloke in interviews too. Never underestimate depression. |

I've never seen What Dreams May Come, and it's on Netflix, so I'll watch it tonight. I've read the Wiki page and a load of reviews, so I know exactly what's coming, but I'm still looking forward to the film. (I suspect it won't be a dry-eyed experience though.....) And a fine piece on Williams by Russell Brand in The Guardian today. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre ... oken-world I watched What Dreams May Come last night and found an impressive and effective film but for some reason or another it didn't totally click with me towards the end, however it appears they bottled it for the finale and stuck a stupid saccharine ending on it, despite having filmed the proper one. Reading through the Reddit that Trooper posted the link to, Williams specifically references being disappointed with the ending when he watched the film as it wasn't the one he remembered filming. I'll watch World's Greatest Dad tonight, despite doing fuck all at the box office it was critically very well received. |

I was initially skeptical about this, but a woman on the radio said that at lerast one study had been done, albeit in Iowa with only about 60 people, and that the creative group did have a higher incidence of mental illness about them. But she also cautioned that care must be taken not to romanticise the torment of the artist. I might hit up my pscology lecturer and ask her about it. I'm vaguely interested. |

All of this discussion of depression reminds me of the Richard Herring interview with Stephen Fry where a simple question from an eleven year old “What’s it like being Stephen Fry” prompted his confession that he had attempted suicide the month before. I've just read Richard Attenborough's obituary and I didn't realise what a thoroughly decent bloke he was. I know people big up the dead but he sounds like he really was well loved and did a lot for his fellow man without shouting from the rooftops about it. |

Glenn Cornick, original bassist with Jethro Tull. Great player, and if I remember correctly, had his bass on some kind of attachment on his belt rather than a traditional guitar strap. |
