I spoke to Paul Daniels on the phone once. He was very polite and humble.

It's been a long time since I saw it but I recall Paul and Debbie coming across very well in the Louis Theroux doc about them.

I remember watching the magic show as a kid and sometimes being scared by the more dangerous tricks.

I was. Is the intimation that Paul Daniels texted a lot of chat lines?

That clip of the cup trick above is just amazing. He was a great showman.

No. It's more a fear.

Edit: never mind. It was an ill constructed attempt at levity in a time of national sadness

From the Guardian obit'.

He met his second wife, Debbie McGee – a former soloist with the Iranian National Ballet – after she took the job of his magician’s assistant in 1979, having escaped Iran after the revolution. They married a decade later.

Fucking hell, 2016. I hope this isn't a marker for the rest of my life, with a swell of popular people from my youth dying. And then a few quiet years, during which I realise no one else is dying because they're either my age or dead. And then a little upsurge as friends go and I count them off. Um, anyway. Sad, RIP Ronnie.

I'd question the "celebrity" status of 'smoking magician guy' and 'mott the hoople guy'.

I once saw Ronnie Corbett in a pantomime.

Gah. Poor old Ronnie Corbett; The Two Ronnies were such a 70s and early 80s staple, and personally I always though they were way funnier than Morcambe and Wise when I was a nipper.

I'm not sure if it's the same, but Rolf Harris was an OBE, MBE and CBE before his past came to light (later stripped of titles, obviously).

Wogan was appointed an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1997, and later elevated to an Honorary Knight Commander of the same order (KBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2005. After asserting his right to British citizenship (he retained his Irish citizenship) that year, the knighthood was made substantive on 11 October 2005, allowing him to use the style "Sir".[56] On 29 May 2007, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire.[57]

BBC said "Entertainer and producer David Gest found dead"

Think they were pushing it in using the word "Entertainer" to describe him

I feel like him at the moment.

No, I was thinking more that a load of press getting to the four season, finding there is nothing to report on and so returning to tax avoidance stories just as I walk out the office smoking a Cuban cigar wouldn't be ideal.
