I downloaded Wii Sports Club today and took advantage of the 24-hour trial. It consists of the original Wii Sports bowling, tennis and golf games, but in HD with online play. You need a MotionPlus controller or adaptor to play it, which alters the gameplay to varying degrees.

Bowling is pretty good, you definitely need to pay more attention to how much spin you put on the ball. It's definitely more difficult - I could pretty much get a strike nine times out of ten, now little variations can just put you off enough to slightly miss. 8/10

Tennis I didn't notice was any different, except for having to play proper forehand and backhand strokes. It's still dependent on timing as to where you hit the ball, not in which direction you hit it. Still a bit rubbish. 5/10

Golf was a revelation, though. I felt I had absolutely no control over the game on the original Wii, but this uses a neat trick where you put the Wii U gamepad on the floor. It has the golf ball on the screen and you point the Wiimote at the screen and it shows where the club head is. Also you have to hit your shots dead straight or it's very easy to hook or slice. With a bit of practice I was hitting dead straight shots off the tee with decent power. 9/10

Online play was pretty slick - I got my ass handed to me in tennis by a Frenchman, though, so it must be broken...

Heh, I played this just after I got mine, and I found the golf really, really hard, gave up after a while, as I didn't want to "waste" my time on a trial doing something difficult, so played lots of bowling (100pin was fun!) instead

In the full game, do you just get those three sports or are there more? There seemed to be a timed unlock of all sports, or unlimited unlocking of individual sports.

I must admit I didn't look into it too much, as I think we have 12 wii u games of some shape or other since Christmas, and I don't really want to invest in any more at the moment.

It's just the three sports, (although on the website it says they're to add more, but I doubt they will) and you pay to unlock each of them - I'm not sure of the cost.

£8.99 per sport. Which is at the mmmmmm-really-Nintendo end of the pricing spectrum I feel. It would equal a full price game to get a hd Wii Sports with online.

I'm happy to pay £18 for golf and bowling. Not bothered about tennis. Plus MotionPlus + (plus)

Wii U Question(s)!

I don't think I'm going to renew my Live subscription*, so will need a new Netflix player. I also quite fancy some new mario business (and never played any of the Wii Galaxies), so am considering a Wii U.

So...

- Anyone tried Netflix on Wii U?
- Better/worse than the 360?
- Problems using UnblockUs with it?

*Bonus Xbox Live question! Can I continue to play my XBLA games without Gold. I've assumed I'll just be unable to buy more.

You can both buy and play XBLA games without Gold, the only stuff that won't work is anything multiplayer related in the game itself and, I believe, the scoreboards. I've never had a Gold membership but have plenty of XBLA games under my belt.

I don't know how good it is compared to the 360 as I never tried it on there, but it works fine on the Wii U (although it doesn't seem to support multiple profiles like the PS3). Never used Unblockus, sorry.

You can still continue to play and buy new XBLA games without Gold as long as you have a credit or debit card attached to your account - you just can't play them online.

Dont know about xbox, but Ive used netflix on both wiiu and ps3. Overall I prefer the ps3 interface. Butvthe wii definately beats it for ease of password input or other text.

Basically the ps3 has a larger screen than the pad, which makes it easier to use.

Also, it requires gold in addition to the netflix subscription? I'm somewhat appalled.

thank you all, that's good to hear.

You do indeed need to be Gold to watch Netflix - gouging behaviour.

Interesting on the XBLA stuff - not sure why I thought I needed Gold for that. Good to know I can still pick up future titles that come out, though I think my 360 is fit to bursting with games I may never touch or finish (I'm looking at you Quantum Ninja, thanks Dave and Dimrill). Plenty of good stuff too, I just have a baby-shaped black hole in my house that keeps my paws off them.

I'm surprised people still don't know this as it's come up even here loads of times. Gold is required for any app that's 'online' (as MS define it anyway) and always has. So, for instance, using Internet Explorer needs Gold but playing a game with no multiplayer component doesn't. Whether you need a separate third-party sub to then do things within a given app is completely unrelated and entirely down to the third party themselves.

Obviously there's a bigger question about why apps are behind the Gold paywall at all; but they always have been, and that's the case regardless of what the app is/does, so I'm curious why it's appalling because we're talking about Netflix specifically?

Worth noting that leaderboards do not require gold, and I think stuff like autolog in the need for speed games don't either. Pretty much everything else does, though.

Yeah, having Googled that now I see you're right. I don't have friends on the Xbox that ever play the same games as me (or any XBLA games indeed) so I've never actually been able to see for myself and just thought someone on here had said that a while back.

Or, more significantly, final fantasy 11, as it had its own subscription. Or reportedly so, as I never actually played it.

:D

It's a title of unique quality.

(I can't believe you actually bought it, did you not even try the demo first)

The demo for Quantum Ninja managed to simultaneously make it seem awesome and terrible. It was a very confusing ten minutes.

It's the most joyous console I've played in a long time. Sure it has less content. But god the content is good.

NSMB:U is the best 2D platformer I've played in my life. So sublimely designed.

Going to have a pause with some other stuff before I start 3D World.

Having never really paid attention to the Wii I'm catching up - content is not going to be a problem for me. Started Super Mario Galaxy recently. It looks surprisingly good for SD, and it's such a good game after about five mins you forget about it completely.

Worth noting, there is a sensor bar in the game controller. So you can play Wii Stuff with just the gamepad as a screen. Which is kinda crazy.

Yep, I tried it in the kitchen. It's like a WiiDS. Just need a tiny Wiimote and nunchuk now.

Sorta a mix of 3DS and Wii-U info from the last Nintendo direct

http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/here- ... 1100-4865/

Quote:
Here's What Nintendo Just Announced
by Patrick Klepek on February 13, 2014
Not quite megaton, but some interesting stuff out of Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo just concluded its latest Nintendo Direct presentation, and it was full of little news bits.

If you're looking for news on a new Zelda, Mario, or Metroid, though, that didn't happen. All of those things are probably happening, but Nintendo's not willing to disclose those games yet.

Here's what the company did talk about, though.

Little Mac joining Super Smash Bros. and it launches in 2014.
Mario Golf on 3DS has a single-player RPG mode called Castle Club. Game arrives May 2.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe will also launch on May 2, with in-game items coming via Street Pass.
Yoshi's New Island arrives on March 14.
Yet another Ace Attorney game is in development.
The new first-person Steel Diver game will have free and "premium" versions. The free version has a few single-player missions and the entire multiplayer mode. It's also being released today.
Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is a new downloadable game being developed with the theme "good feelings." (Yes, really!) It includes a bunch of baseball-related mini-games. One mini-game is free, but the others must be purchased. You can, however, "haggle" with Rusty and get the prices down "significantly." The game will be released in April.
Pokemon Battle Trozei is a downloadable action puzzle game coming on March 20. It's actually a sequel to an existing game.
Inazuma Eleven is making its debut in North America on the eShop today.
NES Remix 2 launches on April 25 with mini-games pulled from Metroid, Kid Icarus, and others.
GBA comes to Virtual Console in the spring, starting with Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi, Mario Advance 3, and others down the line. Mario Advance 2, Wario Ware, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, F-Zero and others are headed to Japan.
New footage from X was shown, but the only release date indication is "2014" in Japan.
There was new footage from Bayonetta 2, as well, and it's coming "later" this year.

First things first, let's get uber excited about this.

Second of all, someone should, like, total post a link to that footage. Like, right now. I bet it's ace.

That looks a tad disappointing. Maybe more of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing for something as batshit as Bayonetta, but that looks utterly devoid of anything new. I loved Bayonetta for its freshness. That looks a little fetid.

A Wii-U has just arrived for me. With Just Dance, Nintendoland, Wii Party and a couple of remotes - all for £189.

I am rather excited about this. Well maybe not the Just Dance stuff (He lied. Convincingly)

I've even got these Nintendo Stars that Nintendo sent me saying they had stolen them off some moaning fucking slaphead just for shits and giggles. I can still spend them right?

A Wii-U has just arrived for me. With Just Dance, Nintendoland, Wii Party and a couple of remotes - all for £189.

I am rather excited about this. Well maybe not the Just Dance stuff (He lied. Convincingly)

I've even got these Nintendo Stars that Nintendo sent me saying they had stolen them off some moaning fucking slaphead just for shits and giggles. I can still spend them right?

It is a great console, you will love it!

I've only managed to get a couple of hours with it but I'm already very impressed.

I'm Bigtrousers - will do some adding tonight. Anything arcadey you would recommend Lave? You're usually into the same kind of stuff as me.

I'm BritishNervoso. Arcade-wise you can't go much wrong with Nano Assault: Neo.

Currently most of my time has been spent on New Super Mario Bros U, which despite the general boredom people express because of the same art style of the previous games - it's the best 2D platformer I've ever played.

That and the glorious Rhythm Paradise (for the orginal Wii - which no longer is fuzzy and horrible looking thanks to coming in over HDMI).

And I've Super Mario 3D world waiting for after the Last of Us.

I've not picked up any Trousers Big Score Arcade style games yet.
