I'd be interested in this if he actually got a designer. Looks as ugly as fuck.

Gary Penn's writing the words. I think that bit of it will be just fine.

Still... $30000... For writing a book... Most people I know who have written a book have done it in their spare time. It's not difficult or costly, it's just time consuming.

$30000 for producing a book. That will be printing costs and pressing costs for the unnecessary vinyl EP.

So then, "Sensi Soccer Book"... shit, I bet that'll be right up there with War and Peace.

Fuck me.

Ah yes. $30000 for the fluff, excellent. I'll just have the content instead please.

Do you think they'll be an Appendix covering haute cuisine for 10 year olds, such as KP Crisps and suchlike? :attitude:

Oof. I dunno about that. It's niche, sure, but the gap is there. $38 is a bit on the heavy side for me. If'n the price were £12-£15 I'd be more inclined to flang pennies at their faces for a copy. As is, I'll wait to see if it's published, then pick it up for pennies on Play Trade or something a few months later.

I'll be severely disappointed if it isn't a Choose-your-own-adventure.

'Kick off . Do you...
Go left - p73
Go right - p94
Racially abuse the opposition - p118'

I think the subject matter is a bit limited. If it was a book about Senible Software it'd interest me more. Presumably they're aiming for some kind of glossy big magazine edition with large pictures.

Large pictures of Sensi's green grass pitch and tiny characters in different colours with maybe a whole chapter on why they chose the shades of green.

Well that'll teach me to post before clicking on the link. I blame the misleading thread title. Not my fault. I'm not clicking one link etc.

Yes. God forbid anyone write a book about a niche subject and get people excited about that. Man, Retro Gamer must be feeling pretty bloody stupid for covering things like this for quite a few years now.

It is about Sensible Software, not Sensible Soccer. The thread's forum's not entirely accurate.

Quote:
Sensible Software 1986–1999 will tell the story of Sensible through interviews and anecdotes from those who were there – including Jon Hare and the Sensible team – and a feast of visuals celebrating the company's idiosyncratic, groundbreaking style.

Er, RG is a magazine that costs £1.50 or whatever, and even one single issue covers multiple games. This is an entire book, costing more (vastly more if you consider the 'bonus AAA+++++++' ticket versions where you get to sit in a restaurant or whatever - let's hope :attitude: isn't tasked with setting the menu, else "restaurant" will be "newsagent" I fear), and it's only going to cover one game.

But anyway, if people want this kind of thing, who am I to say otherwise? I might laugh and point a bit, but hey, it's their money and it's a free country.

Ah, well that explains it a bit I suppose. Like others, I read the original thread title ;)

For $38, I'd expect a hard backed full colour illustratated book.

It seems to me that they want people to fund their writing of a book. A pure vanity project. What if $30k isn't enough?

There is no indication of typesetting, printing, copy editing, other publishing stuff and, most crucially, projected sales. Printing and binding are the major costs here, and that varies according to print runs. And how many pages it is.

it's a neat idea for a book, pitched at a limited audience, but with no real talk of how the money is going to work for me. Because of that, I'm out.

Have they actually written it yet? Surely that doesn't cost anything other than time?

Why not write it first, release it as pdf, and then fund a kickstarter to make fancy hardbacks?

And Kern bought it me for Christmas. It's really interesting to read, and the pictures are good, but it seriously needed a decent copy editor. Pretty much every single plate reference is wrong, to begin with. Apart from that, I love it.
