hooo boy!

Jiffy bags, hayfever and a stolen laptop really undermine the "no needles" stuff

I don't understand why anyone gives a toss about cheating in sport. It's just sport, for christ's sake. And particularly cycling? Jesus

It forms beautiful stories, and narratives are driven by suffering, disappointments and Thrilling Heroics. Possibly none more so than Jack Bauer's in 2014 where he was in tne breakaway for 200km and lost in the final 50m. It was heart wrenching. He cried, a lot .

Brailsford went round giving talks and lectures to businesses about how he achieved the success and was also knighted for it. So it's obviously going to be a pretty big story if the secret of his success not so much marginal gains but fairly large gains from doping or whatever.

The TdF has lost a lot of style and panache since teams are to hire GC contenders and use them as domestiques, burning through them to lift the main man.

The problem with saying "fuck it, it's only sport, take what you want" is, well.. look at pro-wrestling, particularly in the time before Eddie Guerrero and Benoit's deaths.

Pantani died years ago, and I was VeRY SAd and I Still Am. Here he is, sitting down in protest at drugs testing in 1998.

I would recommend the film in netflix about him, and the book.

I don't think Pinot will excite me in the same way. He's too heavy, and lacks something that Virenque had. I think I just like pure climbers.

Edit: huh, Virenque similar weight.

Mali, have you read buzzati's giro of 1949, when a proper novel writer gets his hand on doing the reports, the story will hit you even more..

Paris - Roubaix is on Sunday. This is a ridiculous 257km race on the road and over stretches of cobbles. If it is dry, it is dusty and if wet, the mud is stupid. It ends in a velodrome. The race is pretty much a meat grinder, and tactics are "survive" and "get to the front before the next section of cobbles". Look out for Stannard and Boonen. I'd pick Boonen for the win.

Rider list:

Got some good people there. I need to plan where to see it (in pub on TV, on Saturday, Saltaire Sunday).

Just watched the highlights of Stage 1 TdY. 3 year old: "Look, he's pulling a funny face!". That man? Tommy V.

Anyway: helluva pile up at the end, but a good stage.

Today is mostly flat, but quite exposed in places, so we might see some echelons splitting the peleton. This'll increase pressure to be at the front, in case the fiels does fragment.

Tomorrow's stage looks hard. There's a fair few short sharp ramps (Cote de Silsden, see video, about 1 minute in)before Riddlesdon, it's half mile at 16% then another mile at 7% from memory, so 1.5miles at 10%) I hate it, but the view is nice) which could aid a break before the plunge towards Sheffield

just 10 seconds after i wrote a blog on the descenders'prize, the prize was cancelled!
