The weight is KG. The rest are %. The scales I use have metal plates on that send a current round the body. Fat, muscle and bone are differing density.

I doubt it is very accurate, but it seem constant.

Pretty sure current based density measures are junk science

Not sure how much I weigh, but I'm feeling much better and steadily upping my weights / resistance / reps at the gym.

Been eating very well... but still succumb to biscuit barrel raids after my tea though.

Think about it logically - sure, it's measuring resistance to current as it passes through your body, which we know is altered by passing through different tissues. But why would it take any route other than up one leg and down the other? Even if it did, how would the scales be able to differentiate based on what route it took? If it's going up one leg and down the other, how would it measure any part of your body other than your legs?

You'd need to plug it in 'spit-roast' style really, Kov.

I don't like the sound of passing electrical current through my body to measure density. My heart runs on electrickery.

This may help...

Most of these types of scales use bioelectrical impedance. That is to say, they send a safe and very low electrical current through the lower half of the body. Since the electrical current flows more quickly through water and muscle than bone or fat, the scale measures the speed of the current.

The % don't add up to 100?

Yes. Two main problems with that.

1) Path of least resistance. Got a big fat butt? The current will just take a path that doesn't pass through your big fat butt.
2) By their own definition, they're only measuring your legs. The body does not evenly distribute fat/water all over the place, so it's meaningless to pretend that the legs are an acceptable model for the whole body. This is, for obvious reasons, an exaggerated problem for women.

Not to take away anything from what you've done, man - your weight loss and getting in shape are well impressive! Your scales are bunk though ;)

ok... i will google that too...

When reading your data, keep in mind our bodies are made up of 50% – 65% water. It’s important to note that all tissue, including bone, contains water. Muscle contains more water than fat does. Muscle contains up to 75% water, bone can contain up to 22% water, and fat tissue contains up to a mere 10% of water. Men have more body water than women, which in part is because they carry more skeletal muscle and less essential fat.

These water percentages are important to note when speaking about body fat scales. Because both fat and muscle contain water, part of their total weight includes water weight. This will cause the overall total to be higher than 100%.

For instance, the following stats come from a 172.8-pound man:

Fat: 20.6 percent

Water: 60.5 percent

Muscle: 46.8 percent

Total percentage: 127.9

The total equals 127.9 because body water is found in both the muscle and fat, which increases the total percentage. His water percentage is pretty much on target and his body fat and muscle mass are both within the healthy range.

It says why it does not add to 100%.. and your body acts as a complete circuit. This measures more than your legs.

It doesn't though. That's completely made up. Their own comment that you posted upthread says the current is only passed through the lower half of the body.

Here's a decent link covering the issues:

Quote:
“BIA* had the biggest spread of all the methods, even bigger than BMI,” explains Weightology founder James Krieger. “The error rate got as high as 8%, and that’s for detecting a change over time. So one could lose 4% body fat, yet BIA might show an increase in body fat of 4%.”

As you stand on the plates.. it does not stop at your bollocks, it will do the whole of your body.

When you use a van der gaff gernertor, you hair stands up, as you complete a circuit.

To be fair the results are similar, to the one i had done at BUPA, which connects multiple connection on your body.

Yes it is not exact, but the same scales and the same body, will be consistent.

Not getting involved with the scales and the circuitry, but what do you think you are completing a circuit with when you touch a Van Der Graff generator?

You touch it with your hand, not your legs, and also you're stood on the ground, which is not part of any circuit, unless the whole Earth is a circuit.

Actually, doesn't matter, Kov, your body work is great, but don't get hung up on these bollocks figures.
