That's why you're not supposed to weigh yourself too often, isn't it... poos, fluid retention etc - your day to day weight fluctuates too much for it to be significant. Or that's what I thought?

(Says she who's been doing it daily...)

Some sort of moving average would seem to be the correct method here - smooth out those gorge / poop spikes.

You say that but what if you're eating at the same time, smart arses?

Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

Yep, Smart Arses would be the obvious answer. They would monitor your pooping patterns and quantities and connect with your bathroom scales and fitness app, to provide a complete monitoring solution.

FWIW it's fairly obvious they're targetting certain keywords here so you should be facepalming at the idiots googling that sort of thing rather than those scooping up the traffic to make ad money ;)

Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

I've been seeing a personal trainer for a few months after plateauing with both weight loss and strength training. Under his tutelage I've definitely built up a good bit of muscle and reshaped to an appreciable degree, but my belly just isn't fucking shifting and continues to bother me. So, we've been building up my calorie intake by 100 a week for about six weeks with a view to doing as serious cut phase in an attempt to shift it. Having got to 2200 and started gaining weight, apparently that time is now so Monday will see me dropping 500 calories and doing a lot more cardio.

I'm very curious about how this will work, but sceptical because I've got to the stage of assuming I'll just be fat forever (given the hilarious amount of gym/diet work I'm doing without seeing the change I'd like). To be fair to my trainer I am nearly 40 and only in the last few years have I started treating my body as anything other than a fucking afterthought, so I suspect it's just too damn late to claw it all back. On the upside I'm stronger and happier with myself than I've ever been, so I've got that going for me.

Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

I don't get the calorie increase before the cut - what was his reason for that? (Just out of interest)

Got a new back squat PB on Wednesday (70kgs) so am chuffed about that. :D Can't use my legs today mind.

Author:  myp [ Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:23 ]
Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

Because you can't lose fat and gain muscle easily at the same time. So the bulk phase is to help build up more muscle, then the cut phase is to lose the fat.

I think that's right anyway.

Author:  Jem [ Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:32 ]
Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

Well, yes, that is correct... to clarify I mean was there a reason for wanting the bulk first, instead of after the cut? The only thing I can think of is the slight increase in calorie burn gained from increased muscle mass but I wasn't sure if there was a 'better' reason.

Author:  KovacsC [ Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:45 ]
Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

I have started calorie counting to ensure i am eating enough. I have to eat over 3000 calories a day depending on my training and still losing weight.

That is true in the general case, yeah, and is a cycle body builders will go through. In my case though I think it was more because I was previously on an 1800 calorie a day eating plan and trying to take 500 calories off that for a cut would leave me on a hilariously low intake for someone my size and with my activity level. Adding 100 calories a week lets your body adjust to a higher intake at a gradual enough pace that you can bump it up without putting on weight (to a degree) and now I can cut the 500 calories without starving to death.

That makes sense - thanks for clarifying.

100 calories a week? That seems pointless. I assume you mean per day

Author:  myp [ Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:52 ]
Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

Or do you mean adding 100 calories per day per week. :S

So 1800 per day one week, 1900 the next etc

Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

So I'm a week into this cut (started on Tuesday last week) and so far it's been a bit of a shitshow. I haven't particularly struggled to actually stick to the plan because I don't so much mind being hungry, but my body is not enjoying the process in the slightest. My energy levels went to hell almost instantly and although I feel pretty okay right at this moment, and was only periodically dying last week, the weekend was properly fucking miserable. I never made it to the gym at all due to being so shattered and couldn't really face much aside from a couple of trips to the cinema and some very light cycling around to keep my hand in. Indeed it was so bad that I felt exactly the same as when my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was at it's worst (begging the question of whether my CFS issues were actually diet related in the first place or if it just means my body is incredibly sensitive to calorie drops because of the CFS; though that's a separate conversation).

I'll see it through to the end of the week to see what I can lose in that time, and I'll be talking to my PT about it when I see him on Wednesday, but unless something massively changes I won't be keeping it up beyond Thursday because I can't live like that. I mean I'm down in London at the weekend for a massive piss-up so all this would've been temporarily going out the window at that point anyway but that's neither here nor there. I suppose I can just start gradually raising my intake again until all this goes away and then hold at that level but it's disappointing because with the willpower I've been demonstrating at sticking to the plan I think this could've actually worked very well if only my body wasn't such a wanker.

Posting here for accountability.

I bought a sparkly dress in a size 12 for a Christmas party. It barely zipped up over my arse, which obviously I blamed on dodgy sizing before I realised I'd put on a chunk of weight. :S I kept it for motivation (and because I suck at remembering to send things back); tried it on this morning ahead of a party this weekend and it only bloody zips up :D

Still can't wear it mind you - boobs falling out all over the place

My main source of calories up until recently has been alcohol but I've been cutting down slowly since new year. I'm hoping that by actually using MFP I'll realise how much I drink without realising it :S

I made the decision to stop drinking for good a couple of weeks ago, after drinking £200 worth of wine in 1.5 weeks "because of the stress" and realising I was on the verge of falling down a very slippery slope. With alcoholism on both sides of my family it's not a risk I want to take.

These two things might be related (damn alcohol calories )

As part of my alleged cut I'm trying to break the habit of going to the pub at least once every weekend. I managed one weekend off before a planned trip to London and some unseasonally lovely weather in Glasgow fucked the last two weekends for me. I'm not too worried about my drinking per se, but I realise it's expensive and the calorie intake from it will be screwing up my attempt to sort my weight out so I'm determined to keep at it. This weekend I have nothing pub-based planned and am at my folks house for dinner on Saturday so that should sort me out there.

That's great news Jem, and keep it up Bamba.

I'm also trying to cut down my drinking so am trying to stick to a rule of not having beer in the house. If I want a drink, I have to go out to a pub, and this is reducing my intake Of course, my hands need to hold something when watching telly so I'm now usually clutching a pint of water or coke zero. Only just started doing this so no great changes just yet.

I'm the other way round from you guys in that I never have booze in the house and always go to pubs to drink. I really like taking my tablet to a pub and just sitting reading comics and whatnot while getting slowly sozzled. That's probably very weird of me, but it's nice to be sort of out-and-about and in places with an atmosphere while still just chilling out on my own. It means the temptation to go to the pub of a weekend is always there though even if I don't have any plans to meet friends or whatever and that's dangerous for losing weight. Not least because one symptom of doing that is the general desire to buy loads of crap food on the way back to my flat which doubles down on the damage.
