Start up my gym program tomorrow which I'm looking forward to. One of the guys from my cardiac rehabilitation class is running through things with me and reviewing it every four weeks so that's cool.

Oh and I'm diabetic now so that'll keep things interesting.

If only I actually left my house... I've thought about the gym over and over but realised it involves people and noise. Oh and bright lights :S

Thankfully I am lucky enough to live near the beach and there's a roughly 2 mile path that goes in two directions. Now I just need to get my fat ass onto the thing and walk it. I was doing OK the summer before last. I even went swimming a few times which tbh is about the best exercise I can get because it doesn't hurt my knees or back.

Work out at home - it's what I do (although because expense, not people and noise)

I did think about it but I think it would just make the flat stink. We only have the one bedroom.

There's workout equipment (if you could call it that) on the promenade down the street. Pull up bars etc. I need to do some long distance walking and swimming first to get some weight off because I just wasn't made to be 17 stone and it's taking its toll on my joints etc.

I'm back to only eating once a day now and don't feel sick with hunger all of the time so that's a start. I'm due at my Psych at 2pm today and have come up with a regime of pills that do not make you hungry nor screw with your sugars and cholesterol. I was on them before but I had a high white cell count which they thought was being caused by the meds. Turns out it was something else.

I'm no expert, mate, but first floor flats don't usually have a garden.

Nothing :( we don't even have anywhere to put our rubbish so we have to double bag it all and keep it in the kitchen until the night I can put it out :(

We paid quite a heavy price when we took a flat that's within spitting distance of the sea. Parking is an absolute nightmare too.

Once the weather picks up I will be going for walks. It's kinda hard in the winter when you can hear the wind howling. I do have a bike too, so my main aim is to get my weight down enough so that I can get on that and start using it.

Bad weather notwithstanding, what's the barrier to using the bike? It's low impact (just like swimming is) so you're surely good to go no matter what weight you are?

It's a BMX so I need to pretty much stand all the time I ride it. I'm not sure I have the strength in my legs for that yet. I remember taking it out last year and feeling very top heavy.

No mate nothing. The people downstairs in the basement have the garden. There's absolutely no side access either. You literally walk down a set of concrete steps onto the pavement.

The beach is literally the garden.

Fair enough. The obvious solution there is to buy an actual real bike.

It is a real bike. It's a professional race bike.

It's very similar to that really. Same hook up same wheels. My one isn't an 80s "Looptail" though the dropouts are different.

A personal garden of your own? How does that work, architecturally?

It's a block of six flats. At the back are six gardens in two rows of three, with the ones for the ground floor flats accessed from their back doors, and the ones for the upstairs flats behind them, accessed from a side alley.

Ah, what a lovely idea. I've lived in flats with communal gardens before (and now) but just a little plot of space to garden/potter or hang laundry would be amazing.

Update. So basically I have been cutting out sugar slowly but surely. The only thing I was left drinking/eating it in were coffee (lots) and sweets (lots). I lost quite a bit of weight before Christmas but managed to put it all back on post Christmas Day. Since then I have not been following a diet at all, eating whatever I can get my hands on. Not good.

I have been exercising though. I have been going out far more than I used to and have been doing quite a bit of walking. I did plenty of it in Glastonbury recently and feel good. I did misbehave there though, which comprised of me eating all of my veal dish and then when Mrs JC's risotto got stuck I ate that too. The hardest part for me is obviously the meds I am on, which make me feel like I am never full. It's horrible. However, I am now taking steps to change these meds and have been slowly reducing one of them (the one that stops you feeling full). Apart from my hiccup in Glastonbury (I think my body was just crying out for carbs after all of the walking up and down hills) I've been pretty good. I had my blood done the week before last and my blood sugar is now down to 5.2 so I am no longer pre diabetic.

I think that whilst I am quite badly overweight I feel better than ever. Mostly thanks to the fact I gave up smoking about two and a half years ago and I can really tell the difference. I was starting to get to the stage with smoking where I was struggling for breath in the mornings and going up a set of stairs or walking any distance would completely leave me winded. I was beginning to worry I had done myself permanent damage, but it seems the human body is incredibly forgiving.

Fun question.

Anyone know of a good heart rate monitor that I can wear and use while running?

My heart is less fit than my body, which is to say that before I get too tired or exhausted or feel like I need to stop exercising, my heart rate goes way too high and then goes all over the place.

This is bad, obviously. So I need to monitor the rate at all times so I don't over exert.

I have one I can post to you, or dig through my amazon orders and tell you which it was

They're only cheating themselves really. As soon as they go into a competition any cheating should be exposed, as they're looking for things like the concealed motors.

They should just be allowed to use drugs.

Not sure what the answer is really, if cheating has become more accessible than ever. There's no way amateur events can be monitored to the same extent as professional ones. I can at least comprehend cheating when people are struggling and it's their actual career/money that's at stake but it's unfathomably stupid when it's just over bragging rights.

That would be just like saying that nobody should bother trying to patch games even if it means that most people get so fucked off with the cheats that they stop bothering to play it.
