Ok, so the standalone for this is now on Steam Early Release. Because I am a glutton for punishment, I have purchased it.

I have already found a bug in the menus where the mouse doesn't work properly. Stay tuned for my descent into madness.
Is it still using the engine from ARMA?

Yep, but it's heavily modified.

I bloody love ARMA, but it can be helluva infuriating/amusing at times. I will look forward to your tales of misery :DD

Me too, it's the first time I've done it. I loved the free mod though so happy to throw £20 their way for the time I spent on that.

I find myself at a beach. It is quiet apart from the occasional squawk of a seagull and the bitter wind blowing across the bay. I make my way along the coast, finding deserted house after deserted house. I am hungry and thirsty. I eventually find a ramshackle old building with an ornate fireplace (no fire though, sadly). I find a bottle of mineral water and guzzle it down gratefully. I'm still hungry, but my thirst has been quenched for now. Also in the house I find a fireaxe - I was feeling very vulnerable, but luckily hadn't come across any of those - things. No other survivors either though (I suppose this could be good as well as bad). At least now I can protect myself.

I make my way inland, the wind is not so bad here. Unfortunately this is where I encounter my first two Zeds. I make short work of them, splitting the first's head in two with my axe, before disembowelling the second and stomping on its skull. I am left a bit shaken. I had heard tales of these creatures, but I didn't expect them to be so... devoid of anything. There is nothing left of whomever they were. It is terrifying.

I am now starving. I continue my hunt for food, and now more water as I am thirsty again. I find a rotten kiwi, which is not very appetising at all, but I have no choice - down it goes. It doesn't taste very good and leaves a funny taste in my mouth.

I find a hut with a 9V battery. I am grateful to find this before the sun sets. However I am not in great shape. I find two more zombies and unfortunately I am not as good at dispatching these as the first pair. One tears a chunk out of my shoulder, but luckily it is not a bite - I am not infected. I finish them off but find myself bleeding quite badly. Also the kiwi has made me feel sick. I can no longer walk as fast and my vision is starting to go a bit wonky.

My stomach does a leap as I see what looks like an abandoned hospital up ahead - maybe I can get something to heal my wounds! I limp my way to the entrance and find three undead. They don't seem to be that interested in me, so I sneak by. Maybe I don't smell too great at this point.

I slowly climb the first flight of stairs. As I'm foraging on this floor, I hear gunshot from outside - maybe a survivor has found those zombies. I'm not curious enough to go downstairs and find out. I find some vitamins - not much use to me in this state. I feel dizzy and sick. My vision is getting worse.

I climb to the next floor. Still no medicine. I drag myself onwards and upwards, but the next floor is the roof. I sink to my knees. I know this is the end.

I lose consciousness. It is not long before I die on the hospital roof, alone.

Excellent.

I watched the bloke from Eurogamer doing a live stream of it the other day, I don't think I've ever really wanted to keep watching someone else playing a game before. It looks brilliant. Bit wonky how the zombies seemed to walk straight through closed doors and stuff, mind. But I guess that's why it's an alpha release.

Bloody hell, I've just reminded myself that I'm getting on this DayZ thing when my PEEECEEE arrives.

I actually thought it arrived at my parents yesterday (they'll be in when it's delivered, y'see) but it was my brothers dehumidifier. This is a true story.

Let me know when and where and I'm up for this. We'll have to find each other using the sun! :S

If we both aim to get on the same server then we'll end up on the coast somewhere. However, we'll have no way of knowing exactly where. Without finding a compass we'll have to find each other by landmarks, the sun, or stars (if it's night).

A pain in the arse the first time, but every time after that our position on the server is saved whenever we quit out, so we should stay together after that (until one of us dies).

The Beex Gentlemen's Club of DayZ would not allow this (there's too many mental fuckers out there to start bickering between us).

Hmmm... I've wandered around for about 15 minutes, found absolutely nothing, then got killed by a swarm of zombies.
Plus I can't get my controller to invert the y axis, which means I have to use mouse and keyboard, which is annoying.

You need to change text size to 100% in Windows. Right click on your desktop and choose customise. It's in there somewhere. I had the same problem.

I had a go on this using the mod. I was hilariously shit. It didn't help that I couldn't really properly fathom any of the controls to do with picking things up or putting them down. All the buildings where I thought I might find anything were crawling with the fuckers and any sight of a zombie seemed to end up in a Benny Hill style chase which always ended badly for me. The only time I managed to survive any significant length of time was when I managed to climb onto a factory rooftop and then I accidentally threw down road flares which attracted a pile of them. Or the other time when I got to a dock and there was an invisible line that they couldn't cross. I stayed trapped there for a while then the game glitched and all the zombies just started crawling on the spot and I couldn't move. The only "loot" I ever found was an empty tin can. Need to do a bit more reading I think.

Quick question about this and Steam: does it automatically update to the latest version through steam or when I load it up, or do I actively press something?

Pooters rulez.

I'm going to have a better go at this later, as I couldn't even figure out the keys on my first go and even managed to lock my body to going into one direction.

The atmosphere was great though from what faffing around I did. I just need to get proficient with the keyboard layout and using a mouse so I can play it properly.

DayZ: My Story.

It's sunny. Unbearably so for what appears, judging from the redish brown leaves on the trees, to be early autumn. I sit by the coast occassionally waving at the sea or flicking it the V's. I don't know where I've been but I know I must have been involved in a horrific car accident as my neck is completely immobilised and I can only move around with my head locked into a fixed glare directly in front of me.

Eventually the neck brace must have just fallen off without me noticing though, as I then suddenly regain the function of my neck.

I wander slowly to the nearest structure I can see. It is a small outhouse by the sea surrounded by containers. The sounds of the wind and the waves lapping the shore can still be heard off to my left. Focusing really really hard with my telescopic eyes I spy a single figure standing in the road. He appears not to be moving but he is standing upright looking away from me. I run over to the outhouse quickly to avoid detection even though the figure is about 500 yards away.

Inside the sparse shack I find a motor cycle helmet which I plop onto my head. It's hot but I figure you can't have too much protection around your soft mushy brains when in zombie infested country.

I find nothing else and leave. I sit on the floor. I stand up. I lie down. I roll about and make the grass flatten under my weight. I ninja my way around and take my helmet on and off. I punch the air. I punch a building. I then feel very hungry so I think I better move on.

I walk out onto the highway. It's utterly deserted. No signs of wreakage, noises or wildlife (apart from a few birds overhead). All apart from one lonely man still standing in the road bolt upright.

I squint really hard to take a look at him from the middle of the road. He's actually moving slightly looking in front of him. Actually, no, he's turned to look this way. And now he's running. Full pelt. Towards me. I survey the scene and notice that there's actually no other buildings nearby. A large structure about a mile away is the nearest refuge. There's a grassy hill blocking my view forwards so I decide to take a look over the top of the hill. The man is still running.

I finally reach the top of the hill and see a farm about 300 yards away. I'm tired from the climb up the hill. The man isn't. He is chewing on my leg. I try to run but he's broken my leg. It takes a surprisingly long time for the man to eat me. I bleed. I bleed a lot. I crawl for safety but the man is going nowhere.

The man was still chewing on my as I exit the game.

I restart on a new server. My leg is still broken. The graphics are weird and blurry. I eventually find myself under 3 inches of sea water and, upon finding the correct key, I just needed to stand up.

The menu does not allow me to respawn. I crawl out of the sea for ten minutes.

I change server. My leg is still broken. The option for respawn shaded out. I press all the keys; one at a time and then together.

I change server. Same problem.

I change server's again and again. My leg is still broken with no way of respawning.

I'm not having fun. :(

Yeah, he will. Changing servers won't do anything - you'll appear in the same point with all your inventory and injuries/sickness intact.

Otherwise you could just change servers every time something went wrong.

Is it possible to force a respawn - otherwise I'm just crawling across the floor with no one around. I can't even find a zombie in a reasonable crawling distance to eat me and finish the job anymore.

Internet appears to say "leave yourself to starve or similar, no shortcut"

Actually, no. No word of a lie, I was under the water for ages until I figured out I was under water. I though that it'd gone screwy on me.

You'll starve or bleed out in about 20 mins, just make a cup of tea and leave it running.

I shall do this. I'm navigating my way along with the mouse and keys just fine so I think I probably need a couple more hours to get the basics down and I'll be up to speed.

Then I will hunt the peoples like Seagal in Hard to Kill.

Safety in numbers. Let me know when you're next on. Assuming we can find each other.

You may be able to persuade me too, if voice comms are sorted.

Also: Everything I see this thread I'm tempted to create a rival. "Your Mum - Everyone's banging this" (or as my phone wanted to say, Everton is banging this)
