That sounds not unlike my thoughts on the first bit of Gears of War 2... perhaps it'll do the same thing and become a game once all the exposition is finished?

It seems to at least be a story about Max himself more than actual events, which is good... or what I had hoped for at least.

How long is this game? It sounds like ideal rental fodder.

It's a reasonable length. I'm 10hrs in and I've just started the last third.

Well by the time this is downloaded I'll be due for bed, three hours down the line and it's 38% done.

I will still be up at 2am, but I'll be in no fit state to start playing (or appreciate!) a new game.

The worst thing is I actually made the conscious decision before I set off for work this morning not to fire up my PC and get the game downloading, because I was tired and grumpy, as I always am at 6:45am.

Oh well, no biggy, I'll drink and play online slots instead. Tomorrow night can be Max Payne 3 night (and drinking).

86%, sort of on a trajectory for a 1am launch time.

I reckon I can make that before the Namaqua gets the better of me.

Christ almighty it's a hell of a looker, the 'disco intro scene' looks like a hi-res pre-rendered movie, hard to believe the engine is kicking it out on the fly 8)

Also, I enjoy the 'post-death bullet time' thing far too much.

Any good then?

One for me to buy from Amazon it seems. Downloads tip the scales at 30gb plus. At that size I want a physical copy. Will order it in a couple of days.

Mind you, saying that the last game I bought the physical copy didn't work leaving me to download 22gb :S (NFS The Runs).

Fuck me this game is awesome, Max Payne is back as he belongs. SHOOTING THE PLACE UP, drinking, swallowing pills, and being a bit miserable about stuff.

I was SOOOOOO disappointed by Alan Wake, no one wants to play a shoot-em-up game with a fucking softarse who doesn't like guns and needs to wave a torch at the baddies before he can kill them, and they're not even real baddies anyway, just some sort of pseudo-zombie crap. (See also, Doom 3.)

Max Payne 3 is Max back in his element, phenomenal gunplay, awesome slo-mo takedowns, a man self-destructing with every frame but hellbent on issuing out deliverance to every motherfucker in his way before he succumbs to the morass of misery and self-hatred.

Every bullet through the brain of a bad guy, every face literally taken apart, once the bad guy is already dead, but fuck it let's shoot him some more, is the catharsis he needs.

This is the game I wanted Alan Wake to be. Fortunately, where Remedy lost the plot, Rockstar have picked up Max and put him back on his feet. Extreme violence, excessive swearing, telling people to fuck off and calling them cunts, and making it all look and sound really cool and feel immensely satisfying in the process, often in slow-motion, just because, fuck you this is Max Payne.

Max is back.

If I was going to play any game this would be the one. I will wait until it is cheap as chips though, no rush.

Nice to see Rockstar fully supporting the PC again. I guess they got tired of working within the same old tired old constraints of console development.

The graphics are off the scale awesome, I'm looking forward to the face-off at Eurogamer.

My suspicion is that Max Payne 3 on PC is basically the engine that the next-gen GTA game will run on, they're properly using DX11 stuff like tesselation, and you can really see the impact it has on the graphics.

Really looking forward to this now :D

My new Xeon should eat it up too. Funny old chip. Scores less in WEI and 3Dmark11 but run it in a game and it decimates the I7 950.

It's had me doing what the original Max Paynes 1/2 did all those years ago, replaying the same area again and again, trying different techniques and seeing just how amazingly cool I can make the takedowns look - just for the sheer delirious enjoyment and excitement of it.

Now admittedly I found the first hour or so a bit underwhelming, the environments didn't feel very Max Payney, but once it grimed up a bit I got right into it.

I'm also truly gob-smacked by the graphics, it's hard to overstate how stunning this game looks when it's all maxed out running at 1200p, and one of the selling points of Max Payne right back to the original was how damn sexy it looked.

Finished!

Contrary to popular opinion on here, I really enjoyed it. It was pretty much what I expected - an interactive gung-ho action movie, and I wasn't disappointed.

I was just happy to get back into the world of Max Payne after so long, and Rockstar have done a cracking job, in my opinion.

:this:

Rockstar have pitched this game perfectly IMO, it feels like Max Payne, it sounds like Max Payne (fantastic touch getting the same voice actor back and nods to the original music and sound FX), it looks like Max Payne (mostly!) - it is the same thing done again with modern fancy graphics to an extent, but there's enough of a new world and a new story and new touches to make it a fantastic contemporary game, and most importantly, I want to actually see what happens to Max because I care about him as a character.

Approximately 1000% better than Alan Wake and 5000% better than Diablo 2.

Only downer is I have to wait until AE Jnr is safely upstairs before I can play it 'cause it all looks and sounds so damn violent!

Thoughts so far.

Not good.

I don't really like the "Drunkovision" it's a bit annoying.
Where the fuck is manual save?
Why do I have to be stuck in it unable to quit when I have had enough. Why do I have to wait ages for the ability to quit?
I used "hard lock" for aiming, which makes head shots practically impossible unless you want to get shot up dragging the aim dot to the head.

Good.

It's pretty.
The shooting is fun.
I like the story so far, especially the bit back in NJ.

Cinematic innit! TBH I found it far less annoying than Alan Wake's blurryvision.

Checkpoints innit. Annoyed me at first but it does make it a bit more tense because you can't just quicksave/quickload like I always used to do in the originals. I've grown to quite like it.

Cinematic innit! Just ALT+F4!

The cut scenes are too long winded for a KBM. I'd much rather just sit back and enjoy with the pad.

As soon as I reached the "corrupt not very nice policeman" bit I had no choice but to perfect the headshot. Got it nailed now.

But it does kinda piss me off you can't just save and quit. If I ALT+F4 then I have to sit through another load of cut scenes.

Don't get me wrong I really like the game, but I just wish that after all of the hard work they put into the PC version (and they have, even the Direct X options are about as complex as can be) they would have spent the time to add a save and quit. Would have been perfect then.

Playing through the Brazil section now where Max goes baldy. (Well I was last night anyway, needless to say it's not a game to play when AE Jnr is around, I can just imagine the questions 'Happened to man's face daddy? Happened there?')

Absolutely loving the game to pieces, I can finally forget about the clusterfuck of Alan Wake and enjoy a proper Max Payne game again.

I was playing Modern Warfare when the Grimlet was small, and I shotgunned a guy in the face - to which the Grimlet said "Ouch".

I stopped playing :S

Max is brutal, man. A face shot literally tears a hole in their face and leaves a gaping hole in their head.

I played the game all day yesterday. Even when I wanted to put it down it made it hard for me. I'm now at what I think is the last bit. Once that's done I will play through it at least once again as I didn't realise I was supposed to be looking for golden gun parts until it was a bit too late. I want them now.

It is very good. Very good indeed. It does feel like you are in an interactive movie at times leaving you without much to do, but it is all very slick and pretty.

AE - that bit is among the hardest in the game. I died loads of times getting out of that. Ed - that's the bit where you need to perfect the head shot or die basically. The bastards are heavily armoured. You want to take the helmet off with one shot, then nail the buggers again in the bonce.

Interesting article here.

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2012/ ... analysis/1

It seems that the tessellation is the biggest performance hit. From first hand experience I found it to be the tessellation and HDAO that really made it start to slow down.

Sadly, because you only get the menu option once every half an hour I never really got the chance to play with the settings too much. I'm running mine DX11, Tess to normal and FXAA on very high (as Nvidia cards eat it up). Everything else was on max, but I had to reduce the lighting to SSAO which I can't say netted any difference. I guess if you were looking at it rather than into it (IE playing it) you may be able to tell.

Either way it seems to be a very efficient engine :)

So anyway, back to the actual game rather than this tiresome, turgid technobabble.

I've just started my New York Minute playthrough, which is pretty tough going. You have to clear each chapter without dying, in one minute. You get extra time by killing each enemy, but I'm struggling on Chapter II! I end up dying, but still have two mins on the clock, so maybe need to slow down a bit and not try to rush through it.

You can play as Old-School Max with his weird grimace from the first game, which pleases me oddly. :)

The multiplayer seems to be holding my attention for longer than GTA IV or RDR. It seems more focused and polished, definitely. I do tire of online multiplayer in general anyway, so I don't think this will be any exception. It's fun for now, though.

Sounds like fun !

I've sworn myself off it for today. Yesterday I sat and played it almost continually for 13 hours. Then I realised at 1am that I hadn't had any dinner, my bath, or anything else. I felt quite woozy lol.

Had stuff to do today, so won't let it drag me in*

*until tonight, when no doubt it will have my nuts in its vice like grip.

Still playing this and still loving it. Still doing some bits time and time again just because it's such stylish fun.

About 45-60 minutes per session is enough after AE Jnr is in bed, it's a bit intense for an old fart like me.

(Quite challenging in places too, even on normal difficulty.)

I've not played it since my first day. Mind you to be fair I've not played anything else as I've had tons of crap to sort out. I'm at the airport, and it's bloody hard. That's probably what's kept me from going back because I've been a bit busy with stuff lately and I tend to stress out. Not a good mixture for playing games that are hard :D

Finished it, loved it, awesome.

Took about 12 hours which for me is fine for a single player story mode.

Had a little bit of a lull sometime around Chapters 10/11, but then really pulled it out of the bag for a storming finish in the last three chapters - proper high octane adrenaline fuelled gaming.

Quality stuff.

Yeah I enjoyed pretty much every minute of that. The writing and voice acting was a notch or two better than previous games which helped.

Excellent. So there are some sane people left on this board with good taste in games. I was starting to wonder!

There's been a distinct lack of new gaming interest on the board for a little while. Has there been much/any Bezzie Payne action? I haven't really played much of the multiplayer at all but if there's interest I wouldn't mind a few games.
