No Fixed Abode is a book written by my schoolfriend. It's also 99p on Kindle right now. If you want to hear his story of tramping from Cornwall to London, and his acocunt of homelessnes, I'd say that 99p is a good price.

Since my last post I have discovered Jim Butchers - The Dresden Files, the writing is pretty formulaic but the stories are nice and entertaining and have some genuine laugh out loud moments. I have managed to churn through the first eleven books so far and the overall plot gets nice and involved.

On with Changes, book 12.

Anyone else reading these? Pretty sure it was someone on this forum that pointed me at them.

Have recently read the lot one-by-one. They're very good, though I think they went downhill when it started getting much more plot-heavy (so basically Changes onwards). His Aleran series is also excellent, if much more standard fantasy fare.

Y'see, I'm kinda the other way on that. Whilst they can get a little convoluted, I really want things to come to a head rather than all the main characters, good or bad, just always escape for a future battle. Bring on the carnage! Bring on resolution!

Well Jim Butcher has said there are a planned 20 books in the case files series followed by a "big apocalyptic trilogy" (Stars and Stones, Hell's Bells and Empty Night), so a few years to go until the big resolution.

Am just starting Changes now so will see if my views follow Cras or Curios more on how the series goes :)

Just finished 'Tigerman' by Nick Harkaway.

An unusual book, but full of fabulous writing and delightful little insights as usual. Was a little slow to start and set the scene, but the writing brought me along. Then all of a sudden I'm 75% through it and having a whale of a time.

The ending was a bit quick, perhaps, and hastily epilogued (?) but that does for thematically. Either way, it is memorable read which creates a great crazy island locale and I liked it a lot.

I know it's nothing like new, having been published in 2012, but I'm finally getting round to reading Stonemouth by Ian Banks and it's a fucking cracker. There's massive shades of Crow Road and Steep Approach to Garbadale in it (protagonist returns to parochial Scottish hometown and confronts a deep mystery) but it's totally sucked me in and I'm finding myself even sneaking off to the toilet during quiet periods at work to get a few chapters in. The final reveal could be shite of course but even at that I'm enjoying the journey so it would still be worthwhile no matter what. Seriously recommended.

Just finished malazan book of the fallen book 10. Not sure what to do with myself now. Thoroughly enjoyed them, but thought the ending seemed a little rushed, ironically.

"Blindness" by José Saramago may be among the best books i've ever read. 2014 has been great for me in literary terms. It's the bleakest kind of a post-apocaliptic, which a genre which is bleak by default.

I think I'm at book 8 or so. To be honest I've gotten little bored- it's rather samey, and nothing appears to actually be happening, in between the massively deus ex machina efforts of keeping the main protagonists as the victors.

Gillian very kindly bought me a kindle for my convalescence and I've recently read Harkaways The Gone Away World and by and large it doesn't sound dissimilar — fab writing, amusing insights, wonky pacing and a sudden end. All I'm saying is he sounds consistent.

Just finished "John Dies At The End" by David Wong (which is a pseudonym; the writer is the guy who edits Cracked).

Anyway, it's a cross between a stoner comedy and Charles Stross style Laundry madness with alien horrors and all that jazz.

It was a little too long, and at times it suffered from clearly having been written and released in a serial format originally, but it was terrifically entertaining and I loved it. Would imagine that a lot of people would dislike it, though.

It had a movie made of it too, but I wouldn't be surprised if the movie sucked.

Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie.

I kinda enjoyed this, though it took me a while to overcome my hatred of her tortured writing style and to be honest it did colour my whole experience. I'm still not sure if it was me getting used to the style or her altering it as the book progressed, but it's very rare for me to defer to my Oxbridge English Grad girlfriend to find out if it was me or the writer. So, though it was as I thought technically correct, the whole paragraph long sentences hosed down with commas did make the flow of the words feel a little staccato to begin with and deeply tedious to read. I think it did lessen as the book progressed.

Anyway, this felt quite classical sci-if to me, insofar as it reminded me of Asimov. And by that I mean, it was high concept in it's idea, consequently chilly in it's emotional characterisation and not quite as thought provoking as it could have been. And on top of that, not enough really happens in quite a long book. So, it's good'ish but it's a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars from me.

Now I'm reading Dresden, but he's a bit of a wimp.

Helliquin is a bad ass! He can't really be too powerful, he was Merlin's assassin, for God's sake. When people realise who he is they shit themselves, and it's brilliant.
