Plumbing for mash tun is complete. PFTE tape helped stop leaks at the joins. Now just need to insulate it. And think about Mk2. This now means I can mash twice as many litres at a time as before, and now I need to make my boiler to boil it all.

I made a batch of homebrew the other week, the following means it tastes a bit strong:
1) Woodforde wherry kit tins x2, dilute to 40 pints - I do 1xtin diluted to 3 litres
2) Normal hop levels 10g/10 pints - I do 75g/3 litres of cascade hop pellets straight into the rxn vessel

currently it is a bit like a hoppy barley wine.

Tonight, I took 2026g Maris Otter Pale Malt and 100g crystal malt and stuffed it into 7.2 litres of water. It mashed at 65 for an hour, then went through The Buckets. A sparge of 5 litres at 80 was left for 15 mins whilst the other wort went on to boil. 30g of Brewer's Gold hops and 25g Chinook wrnt in at the start of the boil. Yes, this could be very bitter. But, worry not. 5 mins from end of boil, I stuck 25g Brambling Cross in ( and two pinches irish moss). Chilled using chiller and diluted it down using tap water from 1058 to 1044 which gave 2 gallons. In 5 days, I will lob 1.3kg frozen blackberries in which ahoild sweeten it a bit and take thw esge from the chinook and brewer's gold hops. And dry hop with 50g Brambling Cross for country hedgerow aroma. From weighing grain to pitching yeast was 4 hours; my bucketinnabucket is driving efficiencies.

Soaked grain in hot water for an hour then drained and began to boil the liquid. Soaked it again for fifteen minutes and added that liquid to the pan and boiled it all for an hour, adding hops to make it taste bitter and something to help make it clearer.

If you use the nornal abv calculation, this is 4.3℅. however, i chucked 1kg blackberriea in hakf way through, so the added sugar meabs it might be more.

Tasting notes: bitter, with a blackberry aftertaste. Blackberry taste not overwhelming.

Mixed results after testing 3 bottles. Flavours are good, blackberry taste is strong and bitterness comes through well. Few, if any, off flavours. I changed carbonatuon protocol, though. I decanted the contents of the fermentation tub through a sterilsed sieve, and added 85g brewing sugar to it. Then siphoned into plastic bottles. Very little fizx after two weeks so suspect a) sugar not dissolved,b) no yeast made it through or c) bottle screw caps on warped thread so gas escapes.

Overall, pleased with this new info. Next time bottle in glass bottles with metal caps, not thrice dishwashed plastic bottles.

Citra SMaSH going on tonight, with golden promise malt.

Costs:

Raw materials to make 35 pints of Citra Hopped Pale Ale like I did would work out at about 71p a pint. This is the 4kg golden promise malt, 200g crystal malt, packet US50 yeast, 200g Citra hop pellets.

much as I still think you're being lucky, leftover detergents can affect the yeast - it's a thing in baking, eg don't use anti bacterial soap immediately before and during kneading (not beer).

But also, you're probably spending a crapload more cleaning bottles than you would just buying new ones.

Homebrew club at the micropub was superb. Had some lovely stuff, my favourite was a 6% Mango IPA. My blackberry ale was well received, and I got a bottle to take home. I learnt that the reason why the blackbery ale is a bit flat as when priming with brewing​ sugar, you need to add more of it. So that has explained that. Micropub had Saltaire's South Island Pale, New World Red and another one on. Top night.

According to Untappd I've tried 220 unique beers since October last year including 60 different styles!

1 week conditioning later, it's very citra-y. No off flavours. Quite fizzy. Suspect it makes me sneeze. Overall, very pleased

So, last night was using stuff up brew:

2040g Golden Promise pale malt, 200g biscuit malt and 200g crystal malt went on ti mash at 65 for an hour in 8.5l water, came out at 63, and boiled for an hour. Hops added at start of boil were 30g Brewer's Gold, 30g Bramling Cross and then 30g Brewers Gold, 30g Bramling and 10g Citra added 10mind from end of boil. OG was 1050, yeast was US50. Took 3.5 hours from beginning of mash to pitching yeast.

I want to grow citra (and mosaic). Turns out the rhisomes are under patent. Licensed hop growers *may* be able to get them, but not gardening bellends like me.

Only 3 at homebrew club last night, and one wasn't drinking, so the onorous task of getting through 2 litres of pineapple IPA fell to two. It was a third placed beer in the homebrew competition, and very good it was, too. My citra was well received, so I'll scale that up, I think. I bought a Cloudwater dipa v13 which is a strong beer at 9% which was really good.

Stuff to bottle tomorrow, maybe brew on Saturday.
