I wouldn't worry about the backstory anyway, Gilly - it's all garbled and stupid! Perhaps partly because RE1 was basically a Sweet Home remake made on a wing and a prayer, with no real thought that it would spawn a series that now features eight major, canonical entries, let alone a bunch of spin-offs that "flesh out" (i.e. muddy the waters of) an already preposterous story.

You can get the first six games for the GC (and they made Wii ports of the RE remake, 4 and 0). Most of the GC versions aren't cheap these days, though. I've got all six, plus some additional copies.

If you don't have a GC/Wii, you could always yarr! them and run them on your PC on Dolphin... (Although, can you get 2 and 3 for the Gamecube?) But as has been said, the plot is totally nonsensical. If you want to play them, you should want to play them because they're great games, not to catch up on the batshit plot! :p Although, having said that. The first three games were pretty decent plot-wise, and that's one of the reasons they were so compelling. It's just so much has happened in the canon since then, they might as well have not even happened!

edit: Ah, apparently you can get 2 and 3 for the 'Cube? Were they just straight ports? I assume they're ports of the Dreamcast versions?

When I say plot, I mean a bit more than that I think. I wish I had been 'involved' from the start, if that makes sense.

I'm trying to think of a game I can use as a comparison...er...ok, GTA that's a good one. I played every one since GTA1 (despite being far too young when they first came out, my parents were oblivious to what exactly I was playing.) So I remember the top down view, I remember GTA:London, I remember playing GTA2 with my boyfriend on multiplayer set up over two linked PCs when I was 16 or 17 etc etc. So when a new GTA is announced, although I might not think of the plot of it's predecessors, I do think of all the brilliant gaming moments I had playing them, the GTA humour, the jokes about Nico and his bloody phone and so on. I'm involved in the whole GTA universe.

With Resident Evil, I've missed out on that. So if there was a trailer that showed a particular character coming back, I wouldn't recognise them, or know their backstory. Halfway through the game you might be attacked by a particular big baddy and to some of you that might take you right back to the first time you met them in an earlier game and you crapped yourself and nearly jumped out your seat, but to me it would just be a new baddy.

Do you know what I mean? It's not a complaint, obviously it would be impossible to be involved in every gaming series from the start and I consider myself lucky to be playing games during this generation and see series like Gears of War, Mass Effect and Assassins Creed begin and evolve. It's just a shame that I don't have that history with Resident Evil which is such an iconic gaming series.

Well, get yourself a Gamecube! :D

Or a PSP - I'm tempted to play the first three again once I'm done with FFVII.

As for Resi 4, you can get that on Xbox Live now, along with Code Veronica if you're so inclined. And 5 is obviously available on 360.

If anything, though, definitely get Resi 4 on the 360. I played it through last year when it came out and it still holds up as one of the finest games ever made.

I played a total of about three hours combined across all Resident Evil games before 4, because I couldn't stand the controls. 4 and 5 are some of my favourite games ever. They are also almost entirely disconnected from the previous games, both in terms of plot, setting, controls, and play style. In fact 4 is practically a reboot (and 5 a sequel to it). Both are available for 360. Start there!

You're all right Gill, I was there from the start and hated every moment playing a Resident Evil until 5 came around.

It's a tempting thought but realistically I have no where near the sort of time I'd need!

I think maybe part of the problem is that I picked up a Resident Evil game for the Wii a few years ago and hated it, the controls drove me crazy. I can't remember being particularly annoyed by the controls of the one Resi game I played when I was younger but I wasn't as spoiled by so many good games then. I don't know what that Wii game was though.
I might have a wee look and see what I think of four, or maybe get 5 and talk Jen into cooping it with me.

Ooh, Resident Evil dvd box set of the first four films for <£10 on amazon. Also Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition which I think means it includes all DLC, for £10.99. At that price I could buy two and we could coop it no problem.

Gill, this site is useful for the backstory if you don't have time to play all the old games:

Looking on amazon it looks like there are actually quite a few games available on the wii that have been ported from gamecube or something, but I don't think I could bring myself to play a game with the Wii controller. I think it was Resi4 I had on the wii and I literally rage quit before the end of the first area.

Resi 4 Wii Edition was brilliant! Best use of the Wiimote I've experienced. You could always grab the Classic Controller, though. Or plug a GC controller in.

I expect they all just use the Gamecube controller. Only Resi 4 was properly changed for Wii controls.

New trailer! And in what must be the first reveal of its kind, it's coming earlier! Now set for release on 2nd October rather than the original date of 20th November. Not sure why.

Trailer contains more plot details, so don't watch it if you want to go in completely blind.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!

I've only seen a headline but apparently there's a limited edition of this which includes Leons leather jacket.

Only costs £817.

Don't forget that Dragon's Dogma gets you early access to the demo of this - in July on 360.

Am I fool enough to buy a game I barely want to get early access to a demo that'll get in the end anyway and is irrelevant as I've already decided I'm buying the game on launch day?

Keep watching.

I must say, the E3 footage really didn't set my mind at ease as to what this game is going to be. Looked like ANOTHER third person shooter. Still hopeful though. I mean, it's Resi!

There's three sections.

Leon's is walking around a building full of cutscenes and invisible walls. Then there's a bunch of waiting for other people to open doors, a couple of QTEs, a fight with a handful of zombies, and it's over.

Chris's is a third person shooter fighting against zombies with guns, and a massive long boring QTE section.

Then there's a chase sequence against a fairly dull boss, where you play as a new guy who's name I can't remember.

Not really. You're just downloading a demo and running it on your 360. Instead of downloading it via Dragon's Dogma's menu, you're downloading it from an ad-filled filesharing website. The rest is all the same to the Xbox.

I would submit that that very much isn't true. It's the same to your Xbox, but I imagine MS (and maybe even Capcom) will be able to tell lickity-split if you've played the Resi demo without playing Dragon's Dogma.
