So it auto-replaces if you drop a link in? I thought about that, but then you can't not have it turn into a video.

I presumed he meant that you still need to put it in [youtube] tags but you can just paste the whole URL in. So you've still got the same embed/don't embed options as you have now but when you do want to embed the process is a hair less fiddly. Unless I'm misinterpreting something here?

No, I meant you can just paste a YouTube URL and it'll do the rest.

Given that you can't zoom the mobile site, any page with a video on is now pretty much unreadable, unfortunately :(

Has iOS9 broke the mobile forum a tiny bit?

When you make a post and tap on the bit where you write text the screen is zooming into the text box which it never did before. I don't like it. I don't like change.

It's probably for the new 3d touch enabled app switching on the iPhone 6s.

Out of curiosity, why does that mean switching the side of the screen the apps appear on? I haven't got access to any new enough Apple hardware to play with the 3D touch stuff so I don't really know what impact it has.

The semicolon serves to modify the behaviour of print so it doesn't do a newline.

Pure supposition, but:

The iPhone 6s uses aa new gesture for task switching. You force touch (ie. push a bit harder than usual) on the edge of the phone and then swipe. I'm guessing that something about this felt more natural for the apps to be stacked oldest-to-newest left-to-right, rather than the other away around. I'm not sure what though. Perhaps because older on the left feels right for the idea of going back through apps.

If I've learnt anything about coding it's that if you're not sure which way to put something make it work both ways and offer a user setting.

Settings aren't free. They have a cost. Superfluous ones get in the way when the user is looking for something else. Add too many settings, and users are immediately put off using any of them. Worst case, they're so overwhelmed they stop using the software altogether.

And that's only the UX. Worse, every setting you add is another test scenario. When the user clicks Go, does the browser load the page? What if the language is set to Japanese? What if the theme is set to dark mode because it's night? What if the phone is rotated through 90 degrees? What if it's rotated and in Japanese but the dark theme is switched off?

Each setting increase the surface area of an app by the product of all the other settings. Settings aren't free. You have to use them sparingly.

That's because it's not a format, it's a link to a web page (you can view the source of the page above, for example). gifv is just a made-up filename that tries to play a .webm video, then a .mp4, and falls back to a normal gif if it can't play either.

So this (in theory) works for any kind of video, not just a gifv. You can throw an mp4 at it and off it'll go.
