Also, is that DSFix utility still worth installing? I can't even remember what it did but it seemed to be recommended for the PC version at the time.

Yes, if you want a graphical upgrade over consoles.

Although I wouldn't suggest enabling 60fps, due to the physics braking. Falling through floors isn't gun.

I don't know if my ageing PC will actually offer any graphical upgrades but cool, I'll have a play around with it.

Man alive, Bamba playing Dark Souls... I can't think of anything worse.

Can we take bets on how long it takes for him to delete it - I'll have 1 hour 10 minutes.

Considering he made his play through of The Last of Us sound like Dark Souls I'll go with 48 mins.

You'll have to wait for your results as the Steam key might not come in for up to a week and I'll almost certainly have started playing through something else by then.

You mean the Asylum you start in (basically the tutorial), or the castle with the skeletons in? DS doesn't really have a village that I can think of.

I never heard back from them one way or another. The chat on the page did imply there would be some kind of time lag before they actually handed the keys out so I just sort of hoped it might turn up eventually.

1. If it sounds like something you would like.

2. Yes. (although not because you need to play them in order for plot, but rather, it's the best design of the lot.)

I have Dark Souls Davpaz and I found it infuriatingly hard. I started it on 3, maybe 4 separate occasions too so I gave it a fair chance but in the end it was just too hard for me to endure with my limited gaming time.

I can appreciate why people like it though.

I would perhaps start with Bloodborne - the best Dark Souls game.

If you do go for DS3 make sure to get the whip.

I should finish editing my videos.

Play them all in order if you can.

I'm assuming the multiplayer servers are still busy for DS? Would be a rather hollow* experience without other people popping in.

*Amazing Joke ahead.

Dark Souls is backwards compatible on the Xbox One so that normally gives the multiplayers lobbies a bump... not that anyone here would know of course.

Like MrDave mentioned, the level design in Dark Souls is superb. Slightly jealous of you experiencing it all for the first time.

Pyromancy is your friend.

If you want the first one on the 360, I can lend you my copy and pop it in the post to you. I was going to restart it myself actually, but I think if I fired up my 360, I'd probably get complaints from the neighbours about the noise

Suspect this is the best advice.

As per my games-to-dip-in-and-out-of thread, I don't have the time for more demanding gaming experiences so will never get to properly experience DS and the like (for 10 years or so, anyway).

Which is why I suspect I'm doomed to play Ubi open-world games which are particularly generous in terms of getting straight into it and giving you a good time for 30 minutes.

Fair enough. :) I see that the Prepare to Die edition has been as low as £3.47 in the past and is currently £15.77, so it might be worth waiting for a sale somewhere.

If you’re on PC I think there was an issue with the PC port whereby you had to download DSfix (I think) to sort it out. I’m still not sure that this fully resolved any issues but a Dave may be able to advise.

To be fair, if all you want to do is dabble then I’d strongly suggest you get Dark Souls 3. It’s more accessible, looks better, the PC port is great and supports higher frame rates and resolutions (so I heard - PS4 player here), it’s more linear, has fast travel, the online element is still going strong with regular players so you won’t miss out on integral elements of the game like invasions (you doing one or having one done to you) or friendly co-op to help you with bosses or just to nip into someone’s world to help them with a boss.

You’ll get everything you need to know about the franchise while it’s still active. The story won’t matter much and if you really enjoy yourself then you might be inclined to pick up the earlier iterations which are less accessible to newbies but armed with some information on how to play it’ll be much less daunting. So, yeah, get Dark Souls 3 while it’s still be regularly played.
