This really is my all-time favourite game of this generation. I just:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I just destroyed the spec ops helicopter with the mega buster, after using four machine guns and failing miserably. I was resigned to defeat having drunk all my bottles of wine, but kept plugging away, and as the chopper took my last segment of health, I fired my last shot and destroyed it at the same time, triggering Ending D.

You're playing it again, eh? I fucking loved DEAD RISING as well. Truly my favourite of the generation. Until Dark Souls. Get Dark Souls you tit. They actually have a lot in common. They have that thing I was going on about a few months ago that I like that tends to arise in Japanese games more often than Western ones. Get Dark Souls.

edit:

viewtopic.php?p=571073#p571073

Get Dark Souls.

Yes, I have been dipping into the Dark Souls thread and I suspect it would very much be my sort of game. I may invest with my Xmas money.

And yeah, I'm playing this again. Missed the snuff photo achievements on my True Ending playthrough, and I've become hooked again. I just got Perfect Gunner and Hella Copter. Now I'm contemplating starting again and killing 1,000 zombies bare-handed. Help!

Well that's Dark Souls thoroughly off my list then. Zardoz likes it and it's got a lot in common with Dead Rising? Yikes.

You'd be missing out. You'd also be a fool to take two very general factors together like that as an indication that you won't like a game you've never played before. And besides, the thing they have in common is an almost ethereal thing I explained in the post I linked to, rather than any specific gameplay elements. You total belm.

edit: Although, reading what I was talking about in that old post again, that might actually be a little hard on Dark Souls because it actually succeeds in most if not all of the things it tries to do. And that's what makes it truly one of a kind.

edit edit: I'd be willing to let it slide if the reason you're wary that Zardoz likes it is because you hate Zardoz personally rather than his curious taste in games.

I only have the XBLA spin-off to Dead Rising 2 (by some quirk, the full version is unlocked on my machine as well as my brother's), and have never spent any time with the others. Would this be a good place to start?

I think it's Case West, yeah. You start off as the other chap in the yellow top, and you have to find medicine for his son, or something...

Case West stars the eponymous Frank West from DR1. If it's Chuck then it's Case Zero. Sounds like Case Zero to me.

Oh, cool!

As an aside, has anyone got Ultimate MvC3? Frank West is one of the best of the new characters. He can throw zombies at 'em, and his shopping trolley ultra combo is fantastic. :DD

Play it with me!

Frank was meant to be in the original MvC3 but got pulled. It's great that he's in the Ultimate edition. :)

Also, Phoenix Wright. :DD

We played MvC3 at the cottage and it was a complete mindfuck. I retired undefeated after five consecutive wins, and I'm TERRIBLE at fighting games.

I'm rubbish at fighters, too. Everybody who doesn't have a serious practice regimen is. I find MvC3 to be more accessible to the button-masher than most, though. It's still very technical, but you can by with a few combos comprising simple jabs, launches into the air (the 'special' button is nearly always the 'launch' button), air-jabs, then launches back down, etc. :p

My experience of MvC3 was that, sometimes, if you did a "fireball" move, something would happen. Sometimes, it wouldn't. However, sometimes pressing 'A' would make the FUCKING TV EXPLODE INTO AWESOME.

I loved it - especially the DavPaz character.

It would be interesting to try MvC3 with the easily activated supermoves turned off. At the cottage, I was trying to do the normal moves (you know, down, down towards, towards + punch) and getting killed by people just mashing punch and kick to fill their supermove bar and then unleashing hell.

I haven't even tried the 'simple' control style. Sounds daft! Maybe that's why some of Grim's fireballs weren't coming out...

It really is a game for the hardcore. It's insanely fast (the games of the day, SFII and MK, are leisurely in comparison) which means you want a proper arcade stick to stand much chance of doing the moves. It's not aided by the 360's famously shit dpad (remember when we all got SFII in that 10 XBLA Games deal?). I have Darkstalkers 2 on Saturn and I have no problems with either the old-style official pad or my AsciiPad, but MvC3's blazing speed (Spidey is a bastard) makes it even harder.

Ultimate MvC3 is just sheer cheek.

Did you chaps notice a lot of screen-tearing when you played DR1? It's mainly during the cutscenes, but it's rather distracting. Having fun with this, though! Only played it for about half an hour, but so far I love the sickle! :DD

I never notice screen tearing ever, so

Are you using VGA?

I believe so. The only people I've heard complaining about screen-tearing in general seems to be using a VGA connector. Join the digital age. ;)

Some people actually still have non-RROD Xenon's/Opuses with no HDMI, you know.

I've used VGA ever since I had my Xbox 5 years ago, and when it broke down, I got an Opus, so still no HDMI for me.

Dead Rising never used to tear on VGA, but Microsoft did something in one OS patch or other - it was the one that added colour reference levels for VGA users (previously, using certain set-ups would result in a horrible washed-out display).

After that, tearing all over the place in cutscenes if you're set up to use any resolution above 1280x720.

Don't think I've played that though, unless maybe I saw it in the demo. I may also be completely making this up.

I've recently started Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. The funk of having to run through the same story again is massive. So disheartened. But then I started the new Sandbox mode and everything's turned brilliant. If the cutscene at the beginning doesn't make you smile, you're one of the zombies.
