Don't be forgetting to download my new ghost from last night.

I paid for my virtual driving skills with real live driving calamity yesterday. Flat on one car and total complete breakdown of the other.

Gah, clearly I'm going to need to unlock those Cyber Slick tyres to even have a chance here... Back to Grand Prix!

I just managed to unlock Mirror Mode. I think I've played it for about 15 hours in total so far.

Utterly and completely worth every penny.

I'm still spotting all manner of incidental detail and beauty in the tracks that nobody else but Nintendo manages.

Post subject:  Re: The Mario Kart Club of cunning gentlemen

Dammit I've collected 700 coins now (i.e. loads of vehicle part unlocks), I've got gold (many with three stars) in all 50cc and 100cc Grand Prix, and am halfway through the 150cc Grand Prix - AND I STILL HAVEN'T GOT SLICK OR CYBER SLICK TYRES. (Not that the golds make any difference as they just unlock characters, not vehicle parts.)

Make no mistake people, you ain't gonna beat Trousers' time unless you match his loadout which is one of the super heavyweight drivers (Bowser/Wario/etc), with the Circuit Special kart (or one of the other speedboost karts) on Slick or Cyber Slick tyres. (Glider doesn't matter so much, just choose one of the ones that has the slight speed boost property.)

Now let me be clear here, he drives like a man possessed and is clearly showing off some serious skills, but don't bang your head against a brick wall trying to beat his time until you can at least match the kart composition he's using.

Yeah it's absolutely wonderful, I think it was Dr Lave who said a couple of pages back that it's the most 'next-gen' game he's seen yet and I'd tend to agree - some magnificent sights to be seen on every single course. (Even just the detail on the karts and characters is exquisite.)

Frankly I'm appalled that on both XBoner and PS4 it seems to be acceptable to kick out racing games that lurch around at 30FPS (and less) with the input lag and general jerkiness that entails, (I honestly don't think it's possible to 'zone' on a 30FPS racer), and yet here are Nintendo kicking out a solid 60FPS and amazing good looks on the 'underpowered' next-gen console.

I also love that they've managed an instant reload, which is critical when you're really trying to chip away at a time trial record and you know that any minor mistake fucks the run and you need to start again. No looking at a loading screen, just straight back to the starting line and off you go again.

I felt a bit bad when I shelled out £290 on my Wii U bundle, but a few concerted sessions on Mario later and I already think it's worth every penny, and I haven't even started on Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World yet!

950 coins, still no slick/cyber slick tyres....

WATCH OUT FOR TROUSERS HE'S A HACKER.

Still it is giving me a sort of dual-challenege in that I can work through the Grand Prix I haven't yet got three gold stars on, and try to finish each race with ten stars so that I get vehicle part unlocks as often as possible.

Thing is though it doesn't feel like a grind, the relatively small number of tracks means there's a constant pleasure in learning each one a little better, and the game is just pure joy to play anyway.

Except when it does that cheaty shit with the AI getting the super mushrooms and suchlike when you're way out in front, some of it you can mitigate but sometimes it does get rather blatant.

Still doesn't stop me going right back for another attempt though.

I've just been out and got drunk and then put the ten iOS of vouchers Nintendo have given me (ear it zardox) into Mario kart 7 for my 3ds for my commute.

When I wake up tomorrow this may be a mistake. Two karts at once may be a terrible idea. Buy Mario kart 8 is soooo so good.

And I need that on my commute.

1100 coins and still no slicks or cyber slicks, and oh my christ the AI cheats so bad in the 150cc class.

Maybe we could have a gentleman's agreement for the next challenge to use a kart loadout that's available to everyone? What I want to be doing at the moment is trying to beat Trousers' lap time on Thowmp Ruins, but there is literally ZERO POINT in me attempting to do that until I have either the slicks or the cyber slicks unlocked, and instead it just keeps unlocking a load of other shit that doesn't help me at all.

I think I'll try some multiplayer instead, (I believe I can still collect coins in that), it was bad enough just having the triple gold star award wrenched away from me during the last quarter lap of the last race in a grand prix, but to add insult to fucking injury I lost all my coins as well so not only was the entire grand prix fucked in the space of 15 seconds, I didn't even get any fucking coins for that race.

FIRST WORLD FUCKING PROBLEMS.

Quite possibly. They are dead thick and look like F1 Tyres.

Up all your arses, I got the Cyber Slicks at 1200 coins. (Multiplayer turned out to be really good fun and earns coins at a decent rate of knots too.)

Of course now I have no excuse not to beat Trousers' time.

I CAN'T BEAT TROUSERS' FUCKING TIME.

I've uploaded a ghost of 2:02.287 (something like that anyway), it certainly wasn't a sub-two minute run :( I can get to the end of Lap 1 a little bit ahead, but am behind by the end of Lap 2 and more so by the end of Lap 3.

Stupid Trousers.

I've only had time to play for about 20-30 minutes on this track, and I'm somewhere around 2 minutes 11 seconds.

I don't think I have found the best path yet, and can't work out how to trigger the middle water path (somtimes I can take it, sometimes I can't.

I haven't even unlocked all the tracks yet, and not touched anything above 50cc! I wish I had more time for this!

Shaved half a second off my time for that insult.

I managed to get at least 1 star on all the 150cc today and came 1st in a load of (I say a load - about 60% of the ones I competed in) races on line last night.

I *like* this game a lot. 17 hours + now.

I thought about this yesterday... he will get those slicks within two days (that's why your old proposal wasn't that relevant, you've got everything at about 1500 coins probably) and then he has to do something

It's not a great time but it is at least a clean run, definitely beatable (and then some), but it's a mark on the board at least :)

Great choice Romanista in that it's very different to Thwomp Ruins for getting the right line vs grabbing coins.

With this track you can have all the coins pretty much by halfway through the first lap so it's all about the best line and working out the best drifts etc round the corners. I'm finding the slightest fuck up on the first corner is enough to put me well behind my best time.

Worryingly I see my own ghost and think "How the fuck did he manage that?" when it's me. It's like Me1 vs Me2 Snooker.

I've posted a time but I think it's probably very beatable as I'm not overly comfortable with my line yet.

Even getting just 1 star in the 150cc Grand Prix can be, ahem, 'rather challenging'.

Sometimes I think you'd be better off just flipping a coin.

Fortunately the game is joyous enough to play in its own right, and collecting the coins continues to unlock stuff anyway, that it manages to get away with being INSANELY ANNOYING AND UNFAIR sometimes.
