I've been trying to avoid the pretty pictures and the hype, because we simply cannot be buying something like this right now, but today it is everywhere I look on the internet!

Yeah, I tried to buy it from that John Lewis deal you posted but it was out of stock by the time I clicked through and then I heard they cancelled all the orders anyway.

can't you guys give it as a collective wedding present.. i want to race my mimi!

(bit sad i won't be there to be honest)

As said, we played it in the game kings studio, which lead to this picture
Image

Got it at 18.10, had dinner, home made meat balls and then we got started, completing the 50 cc championships one on one with my son.. he took the price in the first.. was really proud he immediately won this race..

bit surprised they were easier than i though, 5 of them leading to sixty points on the first try

As you can see from the video, and might not have known about the wiiU, nintendo is really going multilingual these days, with all menus and track names translated in dutch for us.. that pile of money has gone in that kind of investments

joined Pixel (from wotr) online, but was disconnected.. gt some mixed results, still some real novices there these days, but also some nice battles....and some horrible frustration..

tomorrow the 100 cc i guess....

Now is probably not the right time for me to be sucked into a new console/game to be honest, Rick! I have so many tasks to complete before the next 6 weeks are up that it is probably a good thing that I don't have any new shiny shiny fun things.

I'll see where we stand after the wedding, and if it is not too painful then we'll see... As long as people are still playing by then. If I'd known this 12 months ago, however, I might gave delayed marrying Russell ;)

The videos for this game have got me salivating, and Trousers is all giddy about it as well (in his emails as well as on here), if I can divine some way to get a Wii U hooked up to my old 720p telly and also get some semblance of sound out of my 5:1 speaker setup then I'll be on board with this.*

The XBoner and PS4 are both dead dogs for this console generation as far as I'm concerned, (both of them being underwhelming PCs stuffed into little boxes and nothing on the games radar I'm particularly interested in or will be released on PC anyway), but a Nintendo console may have some proper legs in it even with just a handful of solid AAA Nintendo exclusive games.

* I think I'll have to go Wii U > HDMI > Telly > Telly optical out (Hope that the telly gets the sound from the Wii U's HDMI in and will pump it back out through its optical out) > Amp optical in, will give stereo sound.

It's an old telly though, like seven years old, so I'm not sure.

I'm a little bit in love with this.

I've completed the 50cc championships and done the first time trial and some of the 100cc grand prix. Every single course is just brimming with incidental detail and opportunities to refine your racing line or just try something new and the rage you feel when getting red shelled just before the finish line evaporates within seconds thanks to the presentation and the love that has been poured into every single pixel.

I think the thing that gets me about Mario Kart is it's a fun racing game but underneath it has absolutely superb racing credentials. Drifting round a corner and just missing a descending hammer before catching a jump right and getting a boost over the finish line is as much fun as recovering from a shell hit and red shelling the offending driver that's just gone past you.

More bananas than I can think of / 10

Well I have solved my telly conundrum and tested my hopes and dreams with the media centre PC and 360*, so the Wii U will work fine methinks.

No chance today though as we're inside the TT course and it's a full race day today, but a quick zoom into Douglas tomorrow to avail myself of a Wii U seems likely. It's actually quite an exciting prospect because I love Nintendo games, whereas I haven't been even remotely inclined to buy an XBoner or PS4.

* Media centre PC works with HDMI out and then into the telly, and then optical audio back out of the telly to the speakers. (This was previously on HDMI for video and optical audio for sound, so it's a tidier solution now.)

XBox 360 I've changed from component video and optical audio out, to just HDMI out and then into the telly, and then optical audio back out of the telly to the speakers, same as the PC basically.

This also means I've been able to retire the component cable splitter, and the old chipped XBox now has the component video in on the telly all to itself. (Using a component cable pack Trousers gave me about fifty years ago, it still works!)

As such as I have one HDMI port left on the telly which I can attach a Wii U to, and then I'll get audio back out from the optical on the telly to the speakers same as the 360 and media centre PC.

Perfect!

TO THE MARIO-O-TRON!

Watched the football last night and am on call today, but I have managed a quick 2 player game with my 5 year old daughter. Just a 50cc GP, where I finished second, first, first, second.

My kids are playing it at the moment. First impressions, it looks nice, haven't worked out the differences between the tyres and gliders and so on. (mostly because I've only used one of each!)

I guess I'll need to play it on my own on the higher cc to really appreciate it.

It's always has bene how to handle those random events, indeed... This ti e the impact of falling / being hit is relatively less, wonder how this will impact on the longer term..

Totally. I've found a few already and I don't think they are on every course but I am also on the hunt for them each time.

The fact that you can see for miles helps.

I did some on-line racing at the weekend and have started the 150cc races off-line.

On-Line

I started out well enough coming second then first but then ended up 7th on Grumble volcano. Getting caught in the middle of the pack can lead to all sorts of disaster. Overall though I put some points on my on-line score and enjoyed it but I do miss the voice chat as I bet a fair few people were swearing like mad.

Off-line 150cc

The amount of time you get red shelled when in first but don't get a red shell while in second is a bit annoying.

Having said that the last lap thrills and spills are about as good as they can get in any racing game. I slipstreamed a couple of karts to just nip ahead at the finish line and managed to catch one unfortunate AI with the boomerang's return flight to then take first place on the last corner.

Holding on to the speaker that twats the blue shell is all well and good but I've only managed to use it once. Every other time I get hit by lightning which makes it almost useless.

I also got the multiple power up in one race. That was like Christmas and I was only 4th.

So so far still very much a lot of fun and I have unlocked all the characters now and not being able to see friends laptimes on the time trials is a bit poor. Nintendo don't really do on-line properly even after all these years.

Grrr, really?

So we'll be taking pictures with our phones and emailing the pictures to each other like we did with Out Run 2 on the XBox FIFTY MILLION YEARS AGO?

Verrr poor Nintendo.

Ok, so online is a LOT of fun. Won my first ever race in the spawniest way possible, miles back in 2nd, a blue shell came from behind to take the guy out in first, I then fired a red shell at him as he sat inches from the finish line, then sailed past. Unbelievably satisfying.

No YouTube video?
Here is my first online win where I was comfortably first but sent out a green shell to hit the guy in second for no good reason.

Looks like time trail is about racing against ghosts which you have to upload manually to Miiverse. If you click on More Ghosts you see a list of close times and what looks like a set of best times, can't see any friends but the manual says you can race against them. I have loaded a time for Mario Kart Stadium if anyone wants to check.

I've just ordered 4 official racing wheels from Tesco.

Games night at mine in a couple of Fridays is going to be legendary. Mainly watching the replays of Luigi's face.

I have got my love of gaming back after a period of ennui all thanks to this. I heart Nintendo.
