I haven't played this for ages - first GTA IV started eating my gaming time, then WiiFit (and, more than I'd like to admit, Uno on XBLA). We should have a super-splendid BETEO GP sometime.

To be honest, I tried the shortcut a couple of times but couldn't improve my time at all. My fastest time so far (2:37) is without using it.

Yeah, I have absolutely no idea how that's done, especially since there's a couple of seconds delay before the new spiky things drop in. Best time so far is just over a minute.

The results of this week, with anextra mention of TCK's 2.39.345, he isn't in my friend's list..

this week DK snowboardcross! (until wednesday 11th)

On the challenge..got it down now to 54 seconds, and think that using the same tactics, without missing it's easily doable in 40, bt for 13 seconds? you have to know exactly where those spinny tops are.

Bottom of the heap, again. I must try and devote more time to this next time round.

Nice one for keeping this up Romanista!

That's funny, because it's gone completely the other way around for me just now, with Mario Kart and Pinball Hall of Fame taking up all my time. And I just ordered Castle Shikigami 3 as well, so I might not be going near my 360 for a while longer.

Oh yeah, and an extra added "Thankyou" to Romanista for keeping this going!

Bastard game! I was disconnected twice from online racing tonight - once when I was on my final lap, about a third of a lap ahead of everyone else, and once when I'd already won my race and was just waiting for the last few stragglers to trickle over the finish line. The result? 250 points (or thereabouts) deducted from my rating each time (yep, even for the race that I'd actually already won). When I started racing tonight I was within touching distance of an 8000+ ranking, now I'm back down to 7500 again.

I think it might be a while before I can go back to this bloody game. Grr.

Rather big differences this week, but not surprising seeing the options the track offers, and probably the ramps most people can't resist, but the expert (which you unlock at around 2.25) shows you should..

Another victory for Canada, which might make up for the absence of a Canadian team in the Stanley Cup Final (icehockey or mario kart racing, which is more important). Malc74, 2.09 what's the secret?

next week Koopa Kape

Personally, I always find it enlightening to download the World Record ghost and watch the replay. It showed me a couple of things I was missing (the shortcut for one thing, and the ability to boost (or at least, try to) straight along the right hand part of the halfpipe near the end of the lap).
It certainly helped me improve another 5 or so seconds, but I'm still a good eleven seconds off the WR time.

I suck at this game... though I found it annoying when shown how to play it properly by my friend at the weekend, he basically doesn't do anything other than slide the entire time around everything (and down the straights). Boo!

Hmm, i've put in a few times on GrumVee, but I think i'm going to need to switch to a different character/vehicle to improve or just learn when to boost.

Funky Kong, in the Flame Runner (which I believe is called the Bowser Bike in Europe - quite why they needed to change all the names around I don't know).

[EDIT] Rick, did you submit any times for the last tournament, because you're not showing up on my list? I actually really enjoyed it, to an almost unhealthy degree (best tournament so far IMO). I managed to just squeak under 1:56 but I'm damned if I can go any faster.

Incidentally, I hope no-one's going to ruin the Grumble Volcano compo by using the glitch that means you can complete it in about 12 seconds. I've never quite understood why people would want to do stuff like that. Apparently there's also a glitch in the regular version of Mushroom Gorge as well, which means it can be completed in about 20-odd seconds.

You're talking about the muchroom one? i did some yesterday, but was a bit tired and got irritated by bumping into the muchrooms while jumping, so got off, did some on the previous challenge, getting it to 40 orso

Just got this game. Last Friday.

Not sure what to make of it. It's fun and I've played it for hours, but it seems awfully imbalanced at times. I'm not sure if the bike/kart split really helps that, it that karts this time round seem sluggish and more difficult to get the powerslides working compared to the new bikes. Also, I was rather annoyed that any of the newly-unlocked karts, bikes and racers don't seem to be any 'better' than the first set. Oh well.

Still, as I've said, enjoyed it lots so far, but it's not a game without faults.

Oh, it's horribly unbalanced. In fact, the karts are so useless this time around that Nintendo might as well have junked them all and just called it Mario Bike Wii. Indeed, with the time trials you'll only actually need one of three specific bikes (in fact, the Flame Runner/Bowser Bike is the one to use for at least 80% of the courses).

Still, I can't stop playing it - beating everyone's time trial times has proved stupidly compulsive for me, and most of the tournaments have been excellent so far as well.

A difficult week.
Grumbling vulcano makes it very hard for you, I still haven't really did three perfect laps, but this 2.12 was as close as i came, without a little mistake in the 3rd lap, i would at least have beaten the expert ghost, and probably camne very close to Malc74's victorious time

Next week, in lin with the competition (Lost coins in the mall), Coconut Mall

Hmm, 2:37. Seems I need to find something like 5 seconds a lap to really give it a go.

I've been messing up the boost starts, tough, so that's I dunno, 4 seconds, isn't it, so that's 2:33 at present.

:this:
Funky Kong/Bowser Bike is the combo of choice for almost all of the tracks. I've used Funky Kong/Spear (or whatever it's called in Europe) for a couple of courses (like Luigi Circuit) and Toadette/Magikruiser for Shy Guy Beach but those are all the combos you'll really ever need in the Time Trials.

I had a go at beating my time, but screwed up once on every single attempt. With a clear run I could probably have shaved another second or two off my time but it wasn't to be.

I haven't switched the Wii on in a few days, so I didn't know about the new tournament. Will have to give it a go.

As for Moo Moo Meadows, I was battling ghost times with one of the guys on World of Spectrum a while back, so I doubt I'll be able to beat the time I already have up there, but I'll give it a try.

to unlock him you have to unlock expert time trial ghosts on 4 or 8 (can't remember) (which mean the normal staff ghost - 7 seconds)

Hi chaps!

Thought I'd pop by to say that I retrospectively set a time on Grumble Volcano. A real pleasure to play that course, but a real pig to get three great laps. I think on a good day I could definitely come top of the gentleman's table, but i do not have too much time to practice!

Also, here's my competition recap...

Mario Kart Wii – Competition Recap!
With videos showing gameplay tricks that make it easier. The depth of gameplay these competitions are exposing is phenomenal.
In all cases, it's necessary to choose kart/character combo wisely to exploit the characteristics of the competition.

July 2: DS Twlight House (race, wheel only)
"Take part in a VS Race in the eerie darkness of DS Twilight House.
It's a Wii Wheel only competition, so keep your hands on the wheel!"
Image Image
tip: get speed power up and find the racing line.

July 1: Coconut Mall (coin runner)
"Some careless customer at Coconut Mall has been dropping their
hard-earned cash all over the place. Pick up all the coins as fast as
you can! Of course, the coins will be returned to their rightful owner."
Image Image
tip: find the quickest route and drive well, don't crash
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZENR_3W0Yj0&fmt=18

June 2: Mushroom Gorge Mirror (time trial, kart only)
"Race a reverse Time Trial in Mushroom Gorge. If you look closely, you'll
see that the layout of the Trampoline Mushrooms is also a little different
than usual. This could be the key to a fast time!"
Image Image
tip: take a shortcut over the new trampoline mushroom near the finish line, use mushrooms to cut across grass

June 1: Galaxy Arena (special, boss battle)
Image Image
tip: turn on the spot, memorise the locations the spinners come down
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx288KkqnLM&fmt=18

May 2: GBA Battle Course 3 (gate time trial, wheel only)
Image Image
tip: find the quickest route to all gates and race well, speed is the key
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iuf39nx6S3g&fmt=18

May 1: Mario Circuit (race, chomp chains on track)

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Just (very) slightly improved my time on Moo Moo Meadows, and then had a crack at the latest tournament.

I'd just like say a big "Fuck You" to Nintendo for making the Wii Wheel compulsory for this one - I know they're really pushing all these pointless peripherals and everything, but it really is a load of old crap, and I know I'd be much better with the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo. As it is, playing with the wheel for about 20 minutes in order to post a (semi) respectable time almost gave me a stress-related embolism. It's now going right back into its box until the next tournament they make it compulsory for. Bastards.

Take a look at my Volcano time to see how good the wheel can be "in the right hands" (sorry).

:metul:

And thanks for the welcome (mat)!

lots of times, but probably because it is an early circuit, rather than many people competing in this week, expert ghost had 1.25, 1.30 to unlock, and many around that mark at least. Matt incidentally posted an 2,12 glumblevulcano time which put him just behind me.. next week wario gold mine!

This week a strange circuit, as the expert ghost (2.04), just seems to beat me in cornering, but not doing anything fancy with short cuts et. al.. some nice times and a close field in the top 6

next week snes ghost valley 2 , afterwards i'll be on holiday et all, so i might get one out before, but are people still playing?

Mortal Kombat 3 obviously !

I think he means Mario Kart 3 , although isnt it Mario Kart 8 at this stage ?

Original on the Snes - 1
N64 version -2
Cube double dash - 3
GBA - 4
DS - 5
Wii - 6
3DS - 7
Wii-u - 8

4 , 5 & 6 might not be in the correct order
