Lovely shots Mark, especially the top one. Such soft colours! And awwww, etc.

More with my patented home-invented Stephen Shore preset. If anyone wants it for Lightroom, let me know!

I'm trying new techniques and presets in Lightroom, and doing extensive tinkering. I'm learning a lot but I'm undecided yet if these new looks are a good direction for me. They lack the honesty and clean nature of my older, subtler and only very slightly washed out 'Stephen Shore' styles, but they gain in immediate atmosphere and a sense of time. Is it a worthwhile trade-off? I'm unsure to be honest, but it's fun tinkering. I think that in time a half-way ground will be found by me, but for now I hope you enjoy the new (or should I say old) look of my photos. This one is an old Oregon one I've dug out. It's accompanied by two I took in the Brecon Beacons on the weekend.

They have a very distinct look to me, Pete. Trying to place it... like over saturated colour plates from books in the 80's.

I think you've answered your own question, that you need to pull this style back some more towards your usual, IMHO.

Very interesting stuff though.

Cheers Zardoz. I think you're right.

I also think that over the weekend I'm going to put my all into creating some presets that will define my shooting for a good while to come, and that will allow for subtle evolving. Now that I'm going to send up a 'Buy Prints' facility in the new year and aim on getting more series, I think my blog and site will need a more considered approach.

So I reckon I'll divide my photos into the following:

America: Light toned and luminiscent or slightly-moody, but going the Stephen Shore / Alec Sloth route. Fresh but faded. Colours more akin to Moonrise Kingdom.

US Civil War: Slightly faded, docu-fairytale look I've got going already. Heavy on the blues and chestnuts.

Wales landscapes: Between America and the grainy rich film look of the Brecon shots.

Street photography: More exagerated tones. Winogrand B&W meets William Klein grunge, or LaRoque deep colour richness.

Portraits & detail shots: Kodak Portra / Kodak 125+ B&W film style, low contrast.

I'm also going to make my first print this month. Quite excited, but I'm not sure what shot I'm going to make it of. Maybe one of the prarie houses.

Hiked up Snowdonia this weekend with some mates. I've probably never been jammier as far as weather and photo opportunities go, as a chopper on a training exercise roared overhead and circled the tarn below me. I took so many pics on this hike that I'm a bit overwhelmed processing them, but expect a blog post in a few days. Meanwhile, Chopper Dave to the rescue!

Cool dude, you'll love it! Getting out of the cities on NY eve is the way to go. Bring a bottle of whiskey and some mince pies and you're sorted.

So, I've spent pretty much all evening working on the photos from the Snowdonia hike. It almost killed me, but I'm very happy with the results. Here's my favourite image from the run, but the rest you can see at the usual place: http://petetakespictures.com/blog

Hope you like!

Fucking hell, Pete - that's a great pic. That's a desktop wallpaper for sure, it knocks the socks off the photos in Microsoft's "UK" Windows theme.

Oh, and cheers for the PM - keep forgetting to respond, will do so now!

Got lucky with a sunrise shot visiting my father-in-law's house in Michigan. Danielle spotted this whilst up at 5am or so (jetlag), came and got me. This is just processed through the iPad as a JPG, I haven't revisited the RAW yet:

That's a fantastic pic Pete - even more so than usual!

I initially thought it was a colourised version of a 19th Century short - there's something timeless about the setting and the subject.

Holy shit! Looks like the Flickr community liked it too as in the last 24 hours it's had 7,239 hits, with the total run-off onto the rest of my photostream being 21,184! 8)

Thanks for the nice words, chaps. Woah. Now if I could only keep that quality up! :)

That's such a good image, Pete. Amazing work :)

I dug out my Tamron 90mm macro tonight to take some sale photos of a gold brooch for Zeppo. This is one of my favourites of the bunch:

Never really used the macro lens in anger before, but I may be persuaded to if it's this good.

I've just spent six days in Berlin doing some intensive street photography, mainly with my new X-Pro1. Tons of images, natch, and it's going to take me a little while to process the highlights for the blog. But here's a little taster...

Having spent quite a bit of time in Berlin (I think I've been there about twelve or so times now) I'll be interested in seeing what you've caught. Do me a favour and drop a post here when you've uploaded everything to the blog will you? Just in case I forget to check back later like.

Not that I'm any kind of photographer but I've always wanted to go to this place in Berlin as I think you could get some amazing shots. It's ownership status is in doubt at the moment though and there's stories of very sketchy 'security guards' demanding money for entrance and confiscating cameras with threats of violence and whatnot so I'm not going near it any time soon.

Oh man, that place looks amazing. Some great pics by the guy who put that up, too. I'd really like to go to that, but yeah, the 'security guards' sound quite frightening. ?:|

More from Berlin. I was up last night working through the first batch. I've hit upon a look I really, really like. It involves shooting JPEGs (yes, really) in Pro-Neg Hi mode and further tinkering with the RGB curves to fade shadows a touch and give a slightly warmer, more filmic feel. This is aided immeasurably by the lovely grain you get from the X-Pro1. Even at ISO 1600 I hate adding noise reduction because the grain looks so filmic!

This one was taken with the 18mm f/2, a lens bundled with the X-Pro1. General internet wisdom says that it is a lens unsuited to anything but portraits owing to its lack of sharpness and that it is vastly overshadowed by its more expensive neighbour, the 14mm. Internet wisdom, as ever, is bullshit. F/4 and over equals CRAZY SHARP.

Hi guys. After an endless age on a crappy pub wifi connection, I've finally (god help me finally) uploaded the first part of the Berlin trip on my blog. Lots of images and I hope you enjoy 'em. Go catch 'em at http://petetakespictures.com/blog

And there's one to whet your appetite. Enjoy!

Good stuff dude, and I totally agree about all the s and u-bahn stations having their own character. During our various travels around the city I couldn't necessarily tell you the name of some of the stations we pass through but I recognise them by sight as soon as I walk in the door of each. It's a shame you never got to see Tacheles while it was still open, it was a mandatory stop every time we were there and always had some weird/interesting stuff to see in it's upper levels. We have a picture on the kitchen wall of the red space rocket thing that used to be in the outside garden which was such a staple of our visits and it makes me sad I'll never see it again. Am I missing something though or have you misspelled it throughout that blog entry?

Cheers Bamba, look forward to looking through those pics of yours later. And no, you weren't missing anything, I had repeatedly misspelt it. B'oh!

My fave pic from the trip, btw:

I would've actually properly embedded those images by the way but the forum code won't have it; it throws some error about not being able to work out the image dimensions.

That's because they're web pages, not images.
