So sorry TheVision. All thoughts and best wishes are with you and your family. I hope the operation goes well and that the doctors are able to quickly inform on the best course of treatment. It sounds as if they have been wonderfully swift in organising the treatment. I hope the nurses and doctors continue to take best care of your dad and you and your family xxx

Thanks for all your kind words folks. He has his operation late yesterday afternoon and when I spoke to the ward this morning, they said he's doing alright.

I'm going to go and see him this evening and find out more but my mom and brother have gone over this morning. I dare say I shall hear from them as soon as they leave. The mobile signal is rubbish in the hospital annoyingly.

Our Rayburn has packed in and the engineer is sucking his teeth and sighing a lot. This bodes ill. Rayburns are pretty effing expensive to replace. Wish the stupid previous owners had just had a second boiler.

Immediate but yay! Ruth just texted to say it's been sorted. so that's a problem delayed for another year.

Wasps.

We had a wasps nest in the garage which we had dealt with. Neighbours have one that they are either not dealing with or not dealing with effectively. Baby and I have both been stung in the last three days. Four wasps got in the window today,

Is there any ecological good to these stupid little buzzy-guts?

I think they do some eating of insect larvae and a bit of pollination but that is more animal biology degree stuff. I know more about fruit fly husbandry but nobody ever asks me about that.

Dear MaliA,

How would somebody go about breeding a variety of fruit flies where five of them could combine together into a sort of super fruit fly and fight really small crime?

Thank you,

A Reader.

Dear A Reader,

Would recommend using a large spider.

Yours,

Dear Mi A,

Your reply seems somewhat lacking in specificity. In what capacity should the spider be used? As some sort of breeding aid for the flies? This seems inherently problematic.

Regards,

A.

My camera has broken, just before Darwin's first birthday.

I'm just not ready for another knockback like this. I've just, after a year, got to the stage where I think foolishly I can do something for myself. Start updating my website again, and I have waited, waited, waited for this, then I go to take the first photos to really get myself going and it's gone.

I've tried four memory cards, all work fine in the laptop, and either they are not recognised by the camera, or it says to format them using the camera (but the camera can't format them, because 'error') and if I turn it on and off again a few times every now and again it seems to let me take a photo that just comes out like some corrupted blocks of colour. Each memory card may do any one of these things at any time. It was working a few days ago.

Just had enough of it all now.

I have a little camera I don't use any more, which you're more than welcome to. It's not DSLR quality or anything but would maybe tide you over? It's a Canon IXUS 220 HS

:this: Beat me to it. Mine's definitely at the cheap end of the scale, being a Coolpix thing, but I never use it.

Aw, thanks guys :luv: that's amazing.

I'm going to have a play with it tonight and get Russell to look at it, otherwise if I might borrow one that would be super. I had been saving for a knitting machine (long story... It was for if and when we ever moved, but my entire motivation on that is waning more by the day), but I think it's going to have to go toward a long term camera replacement now.

And I was stung by a wasp.

I did find a miniature smarties cornetto in the freezer, though. Silver lining?

A new one is perhaps far cheaper than you might think (as long as you don't mind your camera being made by "Tonsee" or "Alberg").

You're welcome to use my spare camera. It's a nice Panasonic but has a spec of dirt under the lens that shows as a small blurred patch right at the edge at some middling zoom levels. I can chuck it at Russ tomorrow if you like.

That would be wonderful if I may, Dr Z. I've been looking at the errors given and some info online for my camera, and it's seemingly knackered, so I'm going to have to get a new one, but doubt I'll get that done in time for Darwin's birthday next Friday, so I won't borrow it for too long. I'll try to shoot around the speck, or take enough to try and keep it unnoticeable. I mostly just want a few pictures of his birthday :)

I realise I've left it too late to reply today as I have only just seen this in the morning, but if I could say yes please, that would be super, in the hope for next week, I'd appreciate it.

I'll have to ask advice on replacing my camera in a thread when I'm feeling a bit more with it. The lens is fine, so that might be something at least, if I go like for like.

You know, it should, and I've seen other people take decent pictures with one, but I just... Can't. They all end up dark and miserable, especially indoors. Darwin is too zoomy today TK even take a picture, but I'll try with Giantmonk in his place. Also, the light seems really harsh.

Edit: wouldn't you know, Darwin photobombed Giantmonk and the picture wasn't too bad... Typical. Usually, though, I just can't take acdecentvouctute with it.

See, usually they are like this. The light us very harsh sndctgdcteam of the picture very dull. It's me... I'm just not that good with the camera in this phone. Even outside. Perhaps because I've become so used to how forgiving my camera is (was... It's stopped being so forgiving now)

Get the Camera+ app, Mimi. It's a gamechanger for taking photos with and amending them afterwards.

I'm delivering new PCs to some staff today. Currently twiddling my thumbs though because one user has decided to back up her I: drive to a USB disk before the swap.

The I: drive is a network drive.

So... I wait.

7 minutes to go!
