I think if she tops up enough she gets some sort of allowance, but I'm assuming she can use as much as she likes as long as she's got the credit for it. I'm just trying to make sure the data is being used by her and not some random apps.
Basically, if she ever comes back to me because she thinks she's getting through her credit really quickly, I want to be able to tell her it's because she was on the Internet for ages, not because maps or whatever went crazy and kept polling for a location.

Samurai Vs Zombies - You are a samurai and you have to kill all the zombies with power ups/helpers and an rpg element. Addictive and very playable.
Word Scramble with Friends - Make words out of a square of letters. Beat your opponent over three rounds. Unusually for a Zynga game this works perfectly on Android.

I've played this a couple of times so far - just against random opponents though. Seems ok, although I need to find a better match. Even paying little attention and using none of the power-ups, I won the games easily. So, if anyone fancies a game, I'm consolemad on there.

I've also been playing Cogs quite a lot too, which is part of the current Humble Bundle. I've already played it a fair bit on Steam but the Android version works pretty well too.

Cross-posting from the Wongawatch thread. A sequel to official Best Mobile Game Ever* "Where's My Water" called Where's My Perry? has just been released for Android so I've snapped that shit up for a massive <0.64>. I've already got a few games on the go but I'm happy to drop everything else for more Where's My X? goodness.

*As awarded by me and supported by all right-thinking human beings everywhere.

Relatedly, my last few posts in the Wongawatch thread have been about Android games so this should give you a list of them if anyone's interested.

Also relatedly I keep a list of all the Android games I've seen that look good/interesting but that I haven't played yet as a list of bookmarks and that list is getting pretty big. If anyone's interested I could dump the list here (as nicely formatted links obviously) in case it's at all useful to anyone?

I've only played the first couple of levels but it's pretty much more of the same; which is a good thing in this case given that I've tri-ducked the fuck out of Where's My Water (including all the Cranky DLC). It's a bit less colourful and lacks a bit of the charm of WMW but the core game's obviously just as good.

You just tap and hold the screen where you want your guy to move to (he walks and jetpacs around) and off he goes. It's precise enough for the relatively slow pace of the game and I haven't had any major problems with it. Sometime you also need to launch seeds around and that's again just a case of tapping where you want to throw so no problems there.

There's a seasonal version of mini pixel adventure game Quiet Please! available called Quiet Christmas which I mention because I think a few people* enjoyed the original. Annoyingly it seems to be exclusive to the shitty Amazon app store but it's easy enough to find on there and it's up for the massive investment of 61p.

*A 'few people' might just actually be 'me and Grimm'.

Latest entry in the Official Best Mobile Game Franchise Ever, the Where's My X? series, is out and it's Where's My Mickey? I'm on my phone so no link but it's up on Google Play and presumably the App Store now.

Hmnm, I don't like the cloud mechanic as much as the stuff the other games and DLC have introduced; having to swipe away at them constantly to squeeze water out of them's a bit annoying. I think they're only used in the first level pack though so we'll see what the others bring when I get there.

McPixel, Waking Mars and Nightsky have just been added to the already silly number of good games in the latest Humble Android Bundle. Nightsky especially is excellent, though I really enjoyed Waking Mars as well.

As buried by me in the Bits & Bobs thread; all right-minded people should currently be playing McPixel because it's an utterly lunatic mix of Warioware and old-school point & click adventuring that will make your brain feel a bit wrong.

I have recently enjoyed Granny Smith. There is a free demo so you can make up your own mind. For free!

Also, 10000000 is pure addiction lasting about 3.5 hours (I shouldn't wonder if it has been covered already somewhere on Beex). It's an action puzzler sort of similar to Zoo Keeper, but you must match your actions with a D&D-style narrative, and level up armour/weapons etc. between games.

It's basically a distillation of all point and click adventure games into 20 seconds. Isn't Monkey Island just 'try everything on everything else' until you win?

Yeah, I got two of them when they were going free. Probably the best phone game I've played, but still left me a little cold. Partly as it just seemed rather lacking in challenge.

Once you get your head round the mechanics it can be a little easy admittedly, but each of the new level sets and DLC packs bring in new mechanics so they're always doing something to try and keep it fresh. The hardest levels are the later levels in the Cranky's Quest DLC for Where's My Water so that set's your best bet. As well as the base levels it brings with it 'challenges' where you have to redo existing level but with restrictions applied to make things more difficult ("complete level X with only two swipes", "complete level X without picking up any ducks", etc). The Mystery Duck DLC is incredibly hard as well but that's only by dint of being fuck-awful and basically violating all the rules the game structure sets up so I can't recommend that at all; it's the only set of levels across all the games that I gave up on entirely because it sucked.

Yeah, a lot of devs have mentioned it in the past and it's often used as a reason/excuse for the free to play nonsense. If you just Google "android piracy" you'll get a shitload of news stories and certainly it's a piece of piss to find installable APKs of pretty much everything if you look on Pirate Bay et al.

There's an API you can include in your app that phones home to the store to check the purchase status. Has that been cracked?

No idea. That whole thing's an enormous pain in the fucking arse though; I often can't play games I've paid for because I launch them during the blackspot of data reception during my commute so they won't play ball.

On one of my old phones I had to de-associate with the Play store and re-associate again if I ever wanted that to work. I've not seen it for ages though, so they either fixed that or took it away.

It's not something I've come across so far and I've installed some games multiple times on successive handsets and had the same game running on my tablet and phone at the same time so it's pretty seamless in my experience (as long as you've got a fucking data connection when you launch the game of course).

Get paid to use your phone. Interesting idea and as long as the ads really do disappear the instant you unlock your phone it's arguably money for nothing. It's not a lot of money obviously but on a device where you can get games and apps for 69p it seems to makes more sense.

Jack N' Jill is a one-button platformer which, like the best of the genre, is incredibly responsive and rarely makes you feel like death wasn't entirely your own fault. It's done with a Gameboy-esque retro aesthetic which suits the game because everything you can see is important and you're not distracted by visual noise. It's basically Rayman Jungle Run boiled down to it's purest form.

I've only played it for about fifteen minutes and up to halfway through the second level set it's still throwing new concepts at me to change things up a bit. Each one is introduced on it's own to let you get a feel for it before it takes things up a level. It could collapse under it's own weight if it keeps up that pace admittedly but it's incredibly good fun and free so what've you got to lose?

Having reminded myself this thread exists, the other thing I'm playing at the moment is Layton Brothers Mystery Room; a spin-off from the Professor Layton series where you instead follow the exploits of the professor's brother, a detective in Scotland Yard, as he and his assistant solve murders.

The presentation and dialogue is a lot like the Professor Layton games but the gameplay is much more like the Phoenix Wright series (or what little I've played of them anyway). You get the basic story of the crime, victim and suspects then you can investigate the murder scene recreated in the Mystery Room of the title. You move back and forth between that and the questioning of suspects until you've built a case then you go after your prime suspect and try to break them under questioning.

I've only done the first case but it's pretty good fun so far and is very well presented with lots of nice effects (e.g. your questions to the suspects show as accusatory arrows chipping away at an armoured heart which gets more nervous as you come closer to the truth). It's especially good fun for my commute as me and Mrs B can play it together, but that's specific to me I assume.

The first two or three cases are free then you need to pony up for the rest so you can give it a good shot without spending any money.

On Eurogamer's advice, I got Fist of Awesome. It's a side-scrolling beat-em-up where you fight bears.

It's rubbish. It starts out okay but you soon realise that you only have eight moves, you'll never learn and more and all the enemies have the same eight moves (with a couple of exceptions). It's basically walk, punch, walk, punch, get surrounded, die, retry, walk, punch, etc.

Avoid/10.

Is that the one with the appalling graphics?

It looked fairly unplayable if so.
