Anyone else playing Dead Space? I like it a lot, especially the lack of HUD.
It's not massively scary, but shooting off limbs is much fun, as is the numerous amusing ways you can die :)

This was one of the ones that fell to the wayside during my triage of awesome games released this month. Will probably pick it up later in the year, as I like the look of it.

Go away you. Dead Space is alongside Far Cry 2 in my mental "I want to play this but I am going to wait until the New Year, when the game is cheaper and I have less games to play" bin. Like Far Cry 2 though, it keeps trying to slither out and into my "BUYBUYBUY" mental bin. Stop encouraging it! Fallout 3 ships on Friday for God's sake! Won't someone please think of my bank balance!

Same here, this must wait till after Fallout 3. However, I'm going round a mate's house soon and he already owns this. Must stare at screen blankly. Must resist urge to BUYBUYBUY after having a go on it myself...

'Tis more a financial impediment to me, to be honest. That, and the fact that I got dragged along to some bizarre anime/cosplay expo thing at the Excel centre yesterday (not my cup of tea usually, honest!) and amongst all the scantily-dressed teenage girls I saw a vendor selling Persona 3: FES for the PS2. So I'm going to be giving that a try before Fallout 3.

I've derailed another thread, haven't I?

So yeah, Dead Space! Looks good...

I got this on the weekend and I'm really enjoying it so far. Kinda has Doom 3 stylings with Resident Evil 4 action.

I'm not convinced the alien/human things are scary enough for my liking though, they don't compare to being chased by the Guardo-peeps (y'know those guys from Resi 4...), but I'm only on mission 3 and I've only met four different types.

It looks brilliant though. The sound is fantastic (I'm sure one of the aliens groaned like a person last night dying whereas they usually wail when you slice their limbs off with the rail gun). I pray to god that in the future all inventories/menu/shops will be as sexy as those on display here. The weapons I've bought so far are good, but no stand out yet. Zero grav is cool. Those bits where air is sucked out the chambers looks (and sounds) fabulous, especially when you first get confronted by a noiseless alien.

Only problem that I have with it so far is that it doesn't seem hard enough, even on hard. I've yet to die yet despite there being save points on almost every wall.

Oh and the complaint about the aliens as above...

You wait until you get onto the Bridge (or, rather, the big chamber just before the bridge). It is, easily, the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in a computer game. I spent half an hour just wandering about looking at the view.

Good. You can loan it to me :)
I don't really want to borrow it as I already have a mountain of games to play and not enough time ot play them. You could loan it to DrFuckface in welsh wales, but be warned, you will NEVER get it back

I think Dead Space looks awesome. Rates higher than Fallout 3 for me.

But needs must mean I'll be getting it and Fable 2 in the new year. When I suspect a £20 new offer pops up. Which is how I got CoD4 and Bioshock last year.

If I get any game between now and xmas it will be mirrors edge.

I've only played the first chapter so far as I've put it to one side in the 'play at night with the lights out pile'. So far impressions are very positive, love the HUD effects and the weapons. The only downer as previously noted is the mobs, I'd rather they had gone with the 'Zombie classic' look rather than the sometime silly human / genestealer look.

This should keep me going until Resi 5 comes out.

I was thinking about getting it through steam but they have such ridiculous prices. Bioshock is still at 55$. What a rip-off

Bought this on Saturday.

It's fucking awesome.

Not reading this thread until I've finished it incase of spoils.

If you like Resi 4 / Horror / Industrial machinery then you must but it.

Bad, bad, BAD!

I'm not allowed to buy any games between now and Christmas just in case, but I also know I probably won't be bought any either, as Ange hates my 360.

So it's lose-lose for me. :(

I've spent some time with Fred Dibnah, he was a lovely chap.
His wife though, Christ. He wanted to give up all the TV stuff and the Fete appearances because, in his words, he was "old and tired", but she wanted the money.
Now she's selling the story of her dead husband all she can. Sad.

Played a bit more last night after Dead Set and it's just getting better. The Zero G / Vacuum set pieces are brilliantly realised (love the way you can only hear your footsteps and breathing when in the vacuum).

Problem is now I can't get pass the bloody 'shoot asteroids with the big gun bit' as old age and booze have dulled my reflexes.

Get the FREE DLC level 5 suit before they start charging for it.

Just came away from an hour or so of playing this. First impressions: Welcome to the USS Narcolepsy: home of things that would have been entertaining if they hadn't stopped being unpredictable sometime around 1974, and wearisome 'drag the unarmed, useless drone player by the nose for ten minutes before anything happens' introductions.

Second impressions: These controls are really quite poor. X to use health items? X is reload in every other game with guns, ever, you idiots. Hammer A to not die, sigh. Hold a button to run? What the fuck are you doing giving an analogue stick no analogue function?

Third impressions: Seeing as this is a survival horror game, I'd better use some melee att... jesus christ, is that aimless, lumbering swing supposed to be useful? You might as well just post the zombies a letter about how you'll definitely be hitting them quite hard sometime in the near future, oh yes.

Fourth impressions: Apparently you should shoot them in the limbs. Apparently you should shoot them in the limbs. Apparently you should shoot them in the limbs. ApparenWILL YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME (and that would have been a better gimmick if you'd hinted at it later instead of spunking it repeatedly over the player's face the instant they start the game).

Fifth impressions: Oh, goody. Bullet time.

Sixth impressions: Actually, maybe I'll switch off the console I just spent the afternoon repairing and do something that's actually entertaining.

Sorry, but it's a pretty abysmal start so far. The fighting's dull, the main character is sluggish and generally awkward, the zombies are plain irritating and something you splat just so they'll get out of the way (as opposed to things you wanted to destroy like in Aliens, or things you just wanted to please, please go away and stop muttering about all the horrible things that have happened on the ship and the equally horrible things your creepy hive mind wants to do to me), and the atmosphere is just totally by the numbers. "THEY R USING THE VENTS GUSY! I TOTALY NEVER THOURT OF MOSNTERS ON THE SHIP USING THE VENTS!!"

"LET ME THROUGH THE DOOR! I will bang on it and scream about how urgently it must be opened in a repeating loop until the end of time, unless you realise you're not supposed to replace the battery a la system shock, but shoot it, whereupon I will SHOCKINGLY HORROR SCARILY be killed by a zombie! Scary, eh?"

"You're crazy, leader guy... or possibly soldier guy.. or husband guy... I honestly don't know or care who any of these people are, and their apparently random interactions don't help! You're crazy, trying to get us killed by er... trying to get us off the ship instead of standing around serving no apparent purpose other than having large breasts!"

"So, this is a huge mining ship and huge crew, blah blah, n oanswer, we go on board blah blah. Here, dogsbody, you go and do all the dangerous work while we hang around in another room behind plate glass. We definitely won't get slaughtered or anything, and I am so confident of your success I will send you off on a variety of maintenance and repair tasks on a mysteriously dead ship with no weapons and no equipment whatsoever. Make sure you go through the obligatory scene where monsters are vaguely nearby but you don't have a weapon yet (and apparently have still a few minutes' worth of hand-eye co-ordination to develop before you can throw a largely useless punch), so have to run for safety in a manner that would have been really exciting and original about twelve years ago. Cheers!"

I know it's just a game, but it's all been done before with far more subtlety and character, and a far more effective sense of dread and foreboding and danger. Without the effectively-built atmosphere of Resident Evil or System Shock it's just a bland FPS hammered into a vaguely survival horror shape by limiting the ammunition, rusting up the controls and scattering a few yawnworthy audio logs around. I really am very disappointed with everything it's shown me so far.

Also: On my first death, I was warped back to the previous room after a fairly long load time. Not to reload my last save, oh no. It took me back to the previous room, but divested me of all my ammunition. So, I had to them quit and reload. It appears to have been a glitch, but lordy.

Is there any reason to give this one a second hour?

I guess not, if you didn't like it. But you are in the minority, and, IM(obviously)O, very very wrong, to the extent where I'm now tempted to give MGS4 a go.
