That's quite a variation. Have the firms been recommended to you by other people who used them?

No, we're going to ask about a bit. Problem is, most people we know locally are NCT, and all just moved house, so no real traction there. I'm not sure, given the cost, if we'll see the benefit, as we might have to move due to schools, etc. It's a bit of a headache, to be honest.

Might be worth discussing with an estate agent how much value it might add. But it still seems like a right load of hassle if you'll be moving on in the near future.

Yeah, I think it'd net off, based on two doors down, but it's a load of hassle.

Also, it is going to be a cut into equity to fund it, so there's exposure there if we want to move in a shorter time frame. So that's a risk.

At present, i think i'd rather keep as is, and refurb dining room and living room.

We need to replace the spindles on the stairs with wooden ones, there are swirly metal things there at present that are not going to meet building regulations.

The general advice seems to be to glue and nail them in place, but to do this properly because of the angle it looks like I need anew toy nail gun.

I've seen that you can get angled ones and the nails to match, but wasn't sure if I might need an air one, these seem to be spendy and/or need a compressor.

I know we don't need it for a big job now, but if we are going to invest in one I'm wondering if it's worth investing in one that we can use to do decking etc with in the future.

Any suggestions?

You'll rent a proper tradesman's bit of kit, though, something you'd not want to buy yourself.

That said, if you can see yourself using it often in the future, then buying one makes more sense.

Does this count as DIY?

Anyway, its to protect the cot rail from toothy monsters. And to protect toothy monsters from the cot rail.

Grosgrain fabric (two layers), vilene fusible fleece (two layers), binding for ties, and some great Velcro that is self-adhesive on one side (hooks) and sewable on the opposite side (loops).

Then why did you come to my house and put them in my washing machine? You monster.

I also found a badge, and a number 6 sticker.

The impeller pump is incredibly vulnerable isn't it? There's no real filter and no cut out if the pump stalls, no wonder these things go on fire.

Ick. In other exciting washing machine related news (they're the new bins!), I've tried a bicarbonate of soda solution to get rid of a musty smell that's developed. If that doesn't work, I'm going to have to reach round the back and faff with the filter. Cleaning the inside of the rubber seal with a cloth yesterday released a heck of a lot of muck.

Assuming you habitually wash at 30/40, have you tried a 70+ degree empty (or sacrificial curtain/towel) wash?

Bacteria build-up on the detritus not fully removed at low temperatures can cause that smell.

The Samsung we bought when moving demands we run a drum-clean every so often to prevent it. If nothing else it shows how much soap is left in.

We have to clean our washing machine every few months due to low temp washing. You can buy special stuff for it which you put in the drawer and then run an empty hot wash

We once disassembled our washing machine because we lost a colour catcher. It turned up in a pair of jeans or something we'd checked fifty times or more a while later. I put it in a washing net now.

I had no idea about the low temperature wash. Eek, I think we always wash at 30. I'll put a boil wash on now with some oust.

Is the wall brick\block or plasterboard?

Would get a 3rd quote as note sure if the 7.5K guy is cutting corners or if the 15K is too busy and can't be arsed so is putting in a high quote.

Either way, prepare yourself for surprises, I just tipped 20K on 2 new bathrooms and a downstairs toilet, they are great and good quality but it's just getting them to finish the bits

The guy I use is local and good at his work but stuck in the 1970's he has no email, internet everything is drawn on A4. It's taken him 3 attempts to get the order right for bog roll and towel holders, also have 40 plus snags.

I told them not to do any more work the week after child number 2 arrived, then he told me he was in Spain the next week so I put that off as no point.

So far they have been one day and done maybe 6 of the 40 snags, so on Monday I will be asking him for a plan, thankfully I still owe him 2K, so he has some motivation to do the work.

it's not a huge issue if you run it every day, especially if you use bio. We're in the habit of doing all the washing at the weekend, so the nasties have a chance to move in.

Before we moved, we knew something was up when clothes started coming out of the machine musty, and occasionally used the harsh cleaning pods.

Now we've moved again, to a place with a septic tank, so bio is out never mind cleaners - glad the machine reminds us!

Right. I have a programmable thermostat on the wall. It connects to the boiler.

I have a Nest. There is the square bit and the round bit. Which bit replaces the programmable thermostat?

The square bit wires into the boiler and the mains. The round bit replaces the thermostat.

The giveaway is it having a screen.

You're mixing electricity and gas, have you considered reading the instructions if not getting a gassafe person in (you're taking the cover off, you may need one)?

What version of Nest? Sine need to work with your existing gear.

I've been remodelling my sitting room. The bottom picture is the "before" pic. Click the images and they appear the right way up.

I tore out all the existing cabinets (recycled all the birch ply into the new stuff) as the tall cabs in the middle of the room were >60cm deep and had a single depth of books, DVDs and CDs in them, so were a huge waste of space. I also took the curtain away and put frosted glass units over the windows, that hinge open and have blinds inside.

It's almost finished, just a ton of snagging to do this week.

£90 sounds spenny. If you buy nest with install it’s £60 mark up. Strangely it’s £160 markup with amazon, but the equipment is £30 cheaper.

Yes. I used very dilute oil paint. It appears that you can’t get coloured stain other than hideous faux wood shades.

Yeah, but we've had it for ages. We should get boiler serviced, whilst I think of it.

I’ve seen a few pastels at Ikea over the years, but there’d likely not be the palette you were after. They look so beautiful. The whole room looks stunning.

I like everything about the light fitting. Tres 70s chic.

Those cabinets look amazing though, seriously well done. And the window gives so much more light, it looks great. I also love the subtle pastel shades of the doors.

Absolutely amazing job!

In fairness - isn't that because the curtains are shut in the "before" picture?

Technically, opening the curtains counts as "DIY".
